Victim of Renton hit-and-run credits dog with alerting family to get help
The Brief
A Renton man was hospitalized after a hit-and-run driver plowed into him while he was out for a nightly walk with his dog.
The dog, Esco, ran home to get help following the crash, despite being injured.
Renton Police are asking anyone who may have additional video of events surrounding the crash to reach out.
RENTON, Wash. - A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after a hit-and-run driver plowed into him while he was out for a nightly walk with his dog.
The family pet is being hailed as a hero, after the dog ran to get help after the crash.
What they're saying
Richard Sanchez says he was walking Esco when he was hit by a passing car.
"I can't walk, I can barely sit up," said Richard, interviewing with FOX 13 from his hospital bed.
Although he was knocked out, Richard says Esco knew what to do, running home to alert the family.
"Esco the hero," said Lori Sanchez. "That's our buddy."
Richard may be battered and bruised, but he and his wife are still feeling fortunate for their furry first responder.
The couple credit part of Richard's rescue to the brave bully.
"I call him Esco the eskimo because he's so fluffy, but I call him Esco the hero," said Lori. "I'm in awe how he made it home, how far they were."
Richard says they were near Talbot Road South and 51st Court when they were hit. Renton Police are investigating dash cam video that shows the car hitting them near a marked pedestrian crossing area.
"The left leg was pretty much shattered." said Richard about his own injuries.
As the driver sped away, Esco sprang into action, making the mile-long trip home alone.
"That's when my family understood that there was something wrong," said Richard. "Esco was on the stairs. He was going sideways, sideways. We went to the door."
As Lori was preparing to look for Richard, an officer knocked at the door.
"Esco was trying to tell me," she said. "The officers said, she just put her hands up. I'm like, 'What's wrong?'"
The couple had just lost their 25-year-old son in 2023, and the thought of another loss made Lori emotional.
"She said, 'Your husband has been hit by car. You are going to need to get there, and he's going to Harborview.' I'm like, 'I just lost my son at Harborview.'"
Esco was also injured in the hit-and-run crash. Lori says he's been "sore," so the dog's vet prescribed pain medication to help him during the healing process.
The family has set up an online fundraiser for medical expenses for Richard and Esco.
"My husband's life could have been taken, just like that, and even Esco is slightly injured. He had to have pain meds," said Lori.
Police are hoping someone recognizes the car, which has a very small sunroof. There may also be potential damage to the side, hood and windshield.
After more than 30 years together, the Sanchez's are happy they'll have a few more.
"He's going to be OK," said Lori, talking about her husband Richard, with tears in her eyes.
The couple says they're also grateful for Esco, and consider him their four-legged superhero.
"We're going to get him in a cape," said Lori. "I already got in mind, a cape and a little chain…and, you say 'Hello' to him and he'll wink."
Renton Police are asking anyone who may have additional video of events surrounding the crash, which they say happened around 9-9:10 p.m. on Jan. 24, to reach out.
Investigators are also looking for a lead as to what make and model the car might be. If you have knowledge of cars, and have an idea what vehicle is shown in the images below, contact Renton Police.

Florida couple accused of animal abuse stored dead cats in hoarder house living room freezer: CCSO
The Brief A Florida couple is accused of abusing cats and storing dead felines in a living room freezer. Detectives said there is evidence that the couple tormented a one-eyed cat named Irene. Dozens of cats were rescued from the couple's 'hoarder home' and the case is still under investigation. MARCO ISLAND, Fla. - Detectives in Southwest Florida said an extreme case of animal hoarding led to the arrests of a Marco Island couple and the rescue of dozens of cats. The backstory While serving a civil inspection warrant at a home at 1740 Piedmont Court on Marco Island on Wednesday, detectives and animal control officers said they found a 'disturbing' situation. Inside the home, authorities said they found: Fifty-seven living cats in conditions ranging from mild illness to critical distress Approximately 15-20 dead cats stored in a freezer in the living room. A "quarantine room" with 24 cats suffering from untreated medical conditions Trash strewn about and floors soaked with feces, urine and vomit Little to no air circulation Olga Murphy, 62, and her husband Igor Mursalimov, 54, were arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty. Detectives said the couple have an active license to breed cats for sale. The majority, if not all, of the rescued cats were Maine Coons. According to detectives, a cat named Irene was missing an eye and suffering in pain without veterinary care since 2023. Detectives said the initial investigation and physical evidence at the scene suggest the couple tormented Irene. A DAS veterinarian provided on-site triage. Detectives also seized hundreds of veterinary medications labeled in Russian. What's next This is an active investigation, and more evaluations and necropsies are underway. What they're saying "I'm proud of the swift action our detectives and partners took to remove these animals from an unhealthy environment so they can get the necessary care," Sheriff Rambosk said. "Animal cruelty has no place in Collier County and we will continue to work aggressively to hold offenders accountable." Judge to decide if Clearwater businessman faces criminal contempt in $100M trust fund case
The Brief A federal judge in Tampa will decide Thursday whether to refer Clearwater businessman Leo Govoni for criminal contempt. Govoni is accused of taking more than $100 million from special needs trust funds. Families relying on the trust money are still trying to recover their losses. TAMPA, Fla. - A high-stakes hearing is set for Thursday morning inside Tampa's federal courthouse – one that could escalate a long-running trust fund scandal into criminal proceedings. The backstory Leo Govoni, a Clearwater businessman, is accused in federal court of taking more than $100 million from medical trust funds managed by the Center for Special Needs Trust Administration, which he founded. The money was intended to cover medical and living expenses for people with disabilities and serious injuries. The trust center filed for bankruptcy in February 2024 after records showed the money was loaned to Govoni's private company, Boston Finance Group, but never repaid. Bankruptcy estate attorneys say Govoni has failed to fully disclose what happened to the funds, including proceeds from roughly $5 million in real estate sales. PREVIOUS: Over 100 businesses seized from Pinellas businessman accused of taking $100M from special needs trusts U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Roberta Colton previously found Govoni in civil contempt in April for failing to turn over financial records. At Thursday's hearing, she could decide whether to refer the case to federal district court for criminal contempt, which could lead to charges and prison time. Court records show Govoni spent lavishly, using trust fund money on a $3.4 million private jet, trips to the Kentucky Derby, large political contributions, and real estate investments. The FBI, IRS, and SEC are also investigating. RELATED: Lawsuit filed against Pinellas County businessman Leo Govoni, Big Storm Brewing's 'Fat Point Brewing' brand Why you should care Many families who relied on the trust funds have been left without critical financial support. Megan Murray, an attorney representing impacted families, told FOX 13 News last month: "It feels like a complete disregard for the victims and welfare and what they've been through over the last decade or so. The victims deserve better, and it was unfortunate to hear some of the things that were testified to because the victims are really at a loss. A lot of them are fully compromised. They don't have alternative resources."
