Church worker reveals Alabama football team ‘inspired' his late son in new Fox Nation special
In Alabama, football is more than just a game; it's a source of inspiration for all those who follow the Crimson Tide. In the first episode of the new Fox Nation series, "The Tides That Bind," Crimson Tide football fan Tim Esco details the role that the team has had on his community — including his late son. Esco, a building facilitator for the Redland Baptist Church in Wetumpka, Alabama, said in the new special, "Everybody talks about Alabama football.""It brings a lot of joy," he added. Esco's son T.J. died last August from leukemia at age 14, per the official obituary page. In his son's bedroom, he told Fox Nation that he always wanted a son to play football with."I wanted to see his little trophies up there," he remarked, pointing to a glass case with memorabilia of Alabama sports teams. While T.J. was in the hospital battling his illness, multiple players from the Crimson Tide football team paid him a visit, including offensive lineman Tyler Booker, offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and quarterback Jalen Milroe. Esco said the encouragement the players gave to his son was "indescribable." "He said that they told me 'I can do it,'" Esco said, referring to the conversation T.J. had with the players. "When they told me to do my best, he said, 'if they can do it, I said, I know I can.'" "And he never gave up — they instilled that in my son." As seen in the episode, Esco and his wife Marianne attended a Crimson Tide football practice just days before the team's important regular-season match-up against the Georgia Bulldogs. "You all have the ability to change people's lives," he told the kneeling players, conveying the strength of the bond between the Crimson Tide and their fans. "They go to the greatest football university in the country," Esco said of the players. "It shows what Alabama's class of men is — what they give us and inspire our kids and us to do." Victim of Renton hit-and-run credits dog with alerting family to get help
The Brief A Renton man was hospitalized after a hit-and-run driver plowed into him while he was out for a nightly walk with his dog. The dog, Esco, ran home to get help following the crash, despite being injured. Renton Police are asking anyone who may have additional video of events surrounding the crash to reach out. RENTON, Wash. - A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after a hit-and-run driver plowed into him while he was out for a nightly walk with his dog. The family pet is being hailed as a hero, after the dog ran to get help after the crash. What they're saying Richard Sanchez says he was walking Esco when he was hit by a passing car. "I can't walk, I can barely sit up," said Richard, interviewing with FOX 13 from his hospital bed. Although he was knocked out, Richard says Esco knew what to do, running home to alert the family. "Esco the hero," said Lori Sanchez. "That's our buddy." Richard may be battered and bruised, but he and his wife are still feeling fortunate for their furry first responder. The couple credit part of Richard's rescue to the brave bully. "I call him Esco the eskimo because he's so fluffy, but I call him Esco the hero," said Lori. "I'm in awe how he made it home, how far they were." Richard says they were near Talbot Road South and 51st Court when they were hit. Renton Police are investigating dash cam video that shows the car hitting them near a marked pedestrian crossing area. "The left leg was pretty much shattered." said Richard about his own injuries. As the driver sped away, Esco sprang into action, making the mile-long trip home alone. "That's when my family understood that there was something wrong," said Richard. "Esco was on the stairs. He was going sideways, sideways. We went to the door." As Lori was preparing to look for Richard, an officer knocked at the door. "Esco was trying to tell me," she said. "The officers said, she just put her hands up. I'm like, 'What's wrong?'" The couple had just lost their 25-year-old son in 2023, and the thought of another loss made Lori emotional. "She said, 'Your husband has been hit by car. You are going to need to get there, and he's going to Harborview.' I'm like, 'I just lost my son at Harborview.'" Esco was also injured in the hit-and-run crash. Lori says he's been "sore," so the dog's vet prescribed pain medication to help him during the healing process. The family has set up an online fundraiser for medical expenses for Richard and Esco. "My husband's life could have been taken, just like that, and even Esco is slightly injured. He had to have pain meds," said Lori. Police are hoping someone recognizes the car, which has a very small sunroof. There may also be potential damage to the side, hood and windshield. After more than 30 years together, the Sanchez's are happy they'll have a few more. "He's going to be OK," said Lori, talking about her husband Richard, with tears in her eyes. The couple says they're also grateful for Esco, and consider him their four-legged superhero. "We're going to get him in a cape," said Lori. "I already got in mind, a cape and a little chain…and, you say 'Hello' to him and he'll wink." Renton Police are asking anyone who may have additional video of events surrounding the crash, which they say happened around 9-9:10 p.m. on Jan. 24, to reach out. Investigators are also looking for a lead as to what make and model the car might be. If you have knowledge of cars, and have an idea what vehicle is shown in the images below, contact Renton Police. 'Esco the hero.' Renton family praises dog for saving owner after hit-and-run
'Esco the hero. That's my buddy.' A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after police say he was hit by a car. His family says he's likely still alive thanks to his dog, Esco. KIRO 7 first shared Richard Sanchez's story on Tuesday. He was walking Esco Friday night. Police say around 9 p.m. a car hopped the curb on Tablot Road near South 51st Court, hitting them. On Wednesday, KIRO 7 caught up with the family, speaking to Richard and his wife, Lori about what happened to him. She says after the crash, Esco ran home, alerting her that something was wrong. 'I was like, 'Why is Esco here?' And I went to the door,' Lori told KIRO 7. 'That's when I saw the officer and I said, 'what's going on?'' Officers say the driver didn't stop. The car was last seen getting onto SR 167 at South 43rd Street, heading north. 'There is no way that the person driving that vehicle did not know that they hit that person,' said Meeghan Black with the Renton Police Department. Richard is in serious condition with several broken bones. He's gone through three surgeries since the crash. 'I got two jacked knees, fractured spine, fractured spine, stitches in the front, stitches in the back,' he told KIRO 7. 'It's not right what that person did.' He says he is in a lot of pain, and hoping someone will help find the driver who did this. 'Please turn that person in, or turn yourself in,' he told KIRO 7. Richard says this isn't the only misfortune his family is coping with. 'I just lost my son not too long ago. This could have been another tragic situation my wife went through.' Fortunately for Richard, his dog was not going to let that happen. 'My dog Esco, smart dog, he knew the way home, and alerted the family,' Richard told KIRO. 'I'm going to get him a little cape and a little chain,' Lori said, praising Esco. Police believe the car that hit Richard is a Kia or Hyundai with bright headlights — and say it likely has damage to the front grill and windshield. If you witnessed what happened, or have information that might help find the driver, you're asked to call Renton police.

Renton man survives hit-and-run after dog runs for help
A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after police say he was hit by a car Friday night. And Richard Sanchez is likely still alive today thanks to an unlikely reason. He's in serious condition with several broken bones. His wife, Lori Sanchez, added that he's been in surgery for much of Tuesday afternoon. According to police, he was walking their dog, Esco, around 9 p.m. on Friday when police say a car hit them both. 'There is no way that the person driving that vehicle did not know that they hit that person. They chose to leave the scene of the collision,' said Meeghan Black with the Renton Police Department. Police say the hit-and-run happened on Talbot Road South near South 51st Court. The car was last seen getting onto SR 167 at South 43rd Street, heading north. They believe the car is a Kia or Hyundai with bright headlights — and say it likely has damage to the front grill and windshield. They're hoping someone with information about the car or its driver will contact detectives. 'This gentleman was severely injured... had to have multiple surgeries with multiple broken bones. So, we really want to be able to bring this person to justice for the victim,' said Black. Police say Sanchez was so badly hurt that he wasn't even able to walk home, but Esco was able to make it back, possibly saving his owner's life. 'Following the collision, the dog reportedly ran back to the apartment complex and alerted family members, who were able to come to the scene. We all know dog is everyone's best friend — but in this case that was definitely proven true,' confirmed Black. In addition to information, Renton detectives ask anyone with video of the incident to contact them.
