'Esco the hero.' Renton family praises dog for saving owner after hit-and-run
'Esco the hero. That's my buddy.'
A Renton man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after police say he was hit by a car. His family says he's likely still alive thanks to his dog, Esco.
KIRO 7 first shared Richard Sanchez's story on Tuesday. He was walking Esco Friday night. Police say around 9 p.m. a car hopped the curb on Tablot Road near South 51st Court, hitting them.
On Wednesday, KIRO 7 caught up with the family, speaking to Richard and his wife, Lori about what happened to him.
She says after the crash, Esco ran home, alerting her that something was wrong.
'I was like, 'Why is Esco here?' And I went to the door,' Lori told KIRO 7. 'That's when I saw the officer and I said, 'what's going on?''
Officers say the driver didn't stop.
The car was last seen getting onto SR 167 at South 43rd Street, heading north.
'There is no way that the person driving that vehicle did not know that they hit that person,' said Meeghan Black with the Renton Police Department.
Richard is in serious condition with several broken bones.
He's gone through three surgeries since the crash.
'I got two jacked knees, fractured spine, fractured spine, stitches in the front, stitches in the back,' he told KIRO 7. 'It's not right what that person did.'
He says he is in a lot of pain, and hoping someone will help find the driver who did this.
'Please turn that person in, or turn yourself in,' he told KIRO 7.
Richard says this isn't the only misfortune his family is coping with.
'I just lost my son not too long ago. This could have been another tragic situation my wife went through.'
Fortunately for Richard, his dog was not going to let that happen.
'My dog Esco, smart dog, he knew the way home, and alerted the family,' Richard told KIRO.
'I'm going to get him a little cape and a little chain,' Lori said, praising Esco.
Police believe the car that hit Richard is a Kia or Hyundai with bright headlights — and say it likely has damage to the front grill and windshield.
If you witnessed what happened, or have information that might help find the driver, you're asked to call Renton police.

Docs: Renton man dies of asphyxiation after being tied up during robbery
Newly released court documents detail the moments that led up to a Renton man's death during a robbery as police continue to look for a second suspect involved. On March 5, the body of 23-year-old Axel Chirino-Banegas was found inside the Sunset View apartment he shared with his uncle. Chirino-Banegas' cousin had been trying to get in touch with him several times but hadn't heard anything. His cousin went to his apartment to check in him himself, and found the door unlocked, which was odd, he told investigators. When he went inside, he found Chirino-Banegas facedown in the kitchen, bound at the hands and feet with duct tape over his mouth. He ran out of the apartment to call 911. When officers arrived, they found that the apartment had been ransacked-- furniture was moved, and drawers and cupboards were wide open, according to court documents. Chirino-Banegas was pronounced dead at the scene. He was determined to have died from asphyxia and had multiple blunt force injuries. Surveillance video showed a vehicle with two people inside, one with backpacks, heading up to the victim's apartment. That surveillance video was able to get plates on the car and help identify a suspect. A search warrant for phone records also put the suspect at the scene, according to court documents. The suspect was identified as 56-year-old Huy 'Alex' Huu Nguyen. The second suspect, the person driving the vehicle, has not been identified or apprehended. It's unclear if the suspect and victim knew each other. The victim's uncle said he did not know of anyone by that name. According to court documents, Huu Nguyen allegedly pawned off the stolen items at three different stores the same day the victim's body was found. Huu Nguyen has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree trafficking in stolen property. Bail was set at $2 million. 'Defendant poses a risk of violence to the community and bail should be maintained. Defendant's release also risks interference with the administration of justice. Another conspirator is yet to be identified and apprehended. Release of the Defendant absent a bail amount risks outstanding evidence of the unidentified conspirator to be further concealed or destroyed," prosecutors said in court documents. His arraignment is set for June 18.

A look into Decker's relationship with his girls
Friday marks day seven of the state-wide manhunt for Travis Decker, the Wenatchee father accused of kidnapping and killing his three young daughters. Today deputies say they are narrowing down the search to Chelan and surrounding counties, with a focus on the mountains. This is thanks to more than five hundred tips from the public. Now, KIRO 7 is sharing an exclusive video that gives a closer look into Decker's relationship with his daughters. Since the beginning of the week, we have been in touch with the girls' mother, Whitney Decker, via her trusted friends and attorney. They tell us the reason this situation is so shocking is because they truly never saw it coming. Through exclusive videos and pictures, we see Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia smiling, laughing, and having fun with their dad. Whitney Decker even gave us a photo compilation turned into a video. She told her attorney she made the video as a Father's Day gift for Travis prior to this year. Arianna Cozart said she has represented Whitney during the divorce between her and Travis. She said Travis was very present in the girls' lives. 'He was going to all the girls' dance and soccer practices, everything they did, you name it, he was being very active,' said Arianna Cozart, Whitney's attorney. 'Whitney would tell you Travis loved two things in this world,' Cozart said. 'Those girls and Jesus. That was Travis.' But she tells us a lot changed after Travis came back from his Army tour in Afghanistan. 'He was able to keep it together for the girls, but he certainly wasn't kind to her [Whitney] and he struggled with feeling he was worth a family, feeling his life was worth that,' Cozart said. Cozart said he is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and struggles with Complex PTSD. 'He sought resources, a lot of that we didn't know before he abducted the girls,' Cozart said. She tells us those veteran's resources are crumbling, both here in the Valley and across the country. She said local organizations are even separating from some patients due to a lack of staffing and funding. 'If Travis would've been supported and his mental health struggles of course he never would've murdered his babies,' Cozart said. She said one local VA especially is struggling. 'They haven't been able to see any new veteran patients for six months,' she said. Because of this, Decker was without the help he needed to work through his mental health issues. 'I know Whitney believes that these children would not be dead if our government military veterans would've been supported,' Cozart said. Right now, Whitney Decker isn't ready to speak out on this horrifying tragic situation. Cozart tells us in time, she will, saying she has already mentioned using her voice and story to advocate for veterans' mental health benefits so that this never happens to anyone else.

Springfield Pride headliner Dawn Richard told ‘Diddy' jurors of threats, violence, abuse
SPRINGFIELD — Pop and R&B singer Dawn Richard headlines the Springfield Pride Parade this weekend, just three weeks after taking center stage at the federal sex trafficking trial of one-time mentor Sean 'Diddy' Combs. 'It's a celebration of Pride, and she's wonderful,' B.J. Coleman, public relations director for Springfield Pride, said Friday. Local Pride organizers booked Richard well before she was called by federal prosecutors to testify against Combs at his Manhattan trial, and organizers instead are focusing on Richard's support for the LGBTQ community. 'She's an awesome performer,' Coleman said. 'We just want to celebrate.' Richard was scheduled to play the fundraising ball on Friday. On Saturday, Richard is expected to join thousands for the parade on State Street, followed by a Pride block party on Stearns Square. Last month, Richard told jurors at Combs' trial that the hip-hop mogul threatened to kill her if she told anyone she saw him physically abusing his longtime girlfriend. Richard, according to The Associated Press, said Combs made the threat one day after she witnessed Combs punch, kick and swing at girlfriend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura with a skillet. Richard said he told her and another woman who saw the attack that 'we could go missing' if they didn't stay quiet. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mitzi Steiner asked Richard what she took 'we could go missing' to mean. 'That we could die,' Richard said, adding she was shocked, because all of this happened just as she was beginning to record with Diddy. She performed in two of Combs' more successful recent acts: girl group Danity Kane and trio Diddy — Dirty Money. Diddy — Dirty Money was comprised of Richard and Kalenna Harper with Combs. But Richard, a New Orleans native, sued Combs last year, alleging threats and groping. Richard testified over two days, detailing the abuse she saw Ventura suffer at the hands of Combs. 'I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach,' the AP quoted Richard as saying. And the abuse came every time Ventura spoke up for herself or, in Richard's words, 'had an opinion.' Combs' lawyers say prosecutors can prove domestic violence but not the federal crimes he's charged with. The 3rd annual Springfield Pride Parade took place on Saturday, June 1.
