Encampments cleared out along Cedar River Trail in Renton

The Renton Police Department worked with King County Public Works on Tuesday to clear out a series of homeless encampments along the Cedar River Trail. 'Conditions in which these people are living are really not safe, it's not sanitary, and it's almost inhumane to have people existing in that lifestyle,' said Sgt. Denis Moynihan with the Directed Enforcement Team. 'Yes, we are telling people they can't live here, but we also have connections to get them resources if they choose to accept the offer.' The department says it worked with a social service provider last week to alert people living in the encampments that they would be cleared this week. They also left a notice on one vacant encampment so people would know when the sweep would take place. Sgt. Moynihan says three people who were open to the idea of drug treatment last week declined the offer during Tuesday's sweep. 'One of the things we are learning is we have to be very persistent with these offers and continue to reach out, make the contacts, and follow up,' he said. 'That's something we are working on with the Recovery Navigator Program.' The goal of the Recovery Navigator Program is to steer people who are struggling with addiction and living on the streets toward recovery options instead of jail. Sgt. Moynihan hopes that if they continue to bring the same people out, they can establish a relationship with people and get them to accept the resources being offered.

Thieves steal credit cards from father watching Kraken game with his son in Seattle

The Brief A Lake Forest Park father says thieves broke into his car and stole his credit cards as he was watching a Kraken game on March 16. That same night, he says he received multiple notifications from his bank alerting him of fraudulent purchases being made in Renton. RENTON, Wash. - A Lake Forest Park father says thieves broke into his car and stole his credit cards as he was watching a Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena. The backstory Andrey Gulobovich says he was watching the game with his four-year-old son on March 16 when he received multiple notifications from his bank alerting him of fraudulent purchases. When Gulobovich returned to his vehicle parked outside Climate Pledge Arena, he said his window was smashed in and his wallet was gone. Renton Police say two suspects were caught on surveillance cameras at a Fred Meyer in downtown Renton on the same night as the hockey game. "There was an Xbox, Playstation, sound system, and then we also think there were some gift cards," said Meeghan Black, communications manager with the Renton Police Department. Investigators believe the purchases totaled to nearly $4,500. Weeks after the theft, Gulobovich is still dealing with the fallout. "I have multiple businesses, and they got into my debit cards," said Gulobovich. "I just signed some papers today for a bank to say it wasn't my charges." Anyone with more information on these suspects can contact the Renton Police Department, or Detective Willet at bwillet@ (Case # 25-2374). Police: Two arrested in Kent may be linked to ATM theft ring

The Renton Police Department says they arrested two people who might be connected to an ATM theft ring in King and Pierce counties. Officers say one of them—Diana Hayward— tried to hide in a refrigerator, but they found and arrested her. On Friday, the department arrested Hayward and a 39-year-old man named Sean Coleman in Kent—both have a history of run-ins with the law. The department says Coleman is a known gang member and is considered armed and dangerous. Officers say he has five felony convictions and was arrested on two felony warrants for having a gun illegally. Hayward, according to the department, has 23 felony convictions and was arrested on warrants for breaking into a home and stealing a car. During a search warrant following the arrest, officers found two loaded guns, including a fully automatic Glock and a rifle. Officers also found seven cell phones that were possibly used in the crimes.
