126gm heroin smuggled from Myanmar seized in Kochi, migrant workers arrested
Kochi: In a major drug bust in Perumbavoor, 126 grams of heroin worth over Rs 10 lakh smuggled from Myanmar were seized on Thursday. Four Assam natives were arrested with the contraband.

Heroin was found in 10 soap boxes, and sources said that one box sold here for anything between Rs 70,000 and Rs 1 lakh, said police.
A special investigation team led by

and Thadiyittaparambu Police arrested Shukur Ali (31), Sabir Hussain (32), Saddam Hussain (37) and Rameez Raj (38), all natives of Nagaon, Assam. The police team intercepted the accused near Chembarakky based on a tip-off received by district police chief M Hemalatha
Shukur had been under surveillance for allegedly smuggling heroin, said police.
The accused confessed to police that they purchased the heroin in Assam for Rs 30,000 per box. The box was sold here for at least Rs 70,000 and would go up to Rs 1 lakh, said police.
"Shukur was a key figure in smuggling drugs into Kerala. After arriving in Aluva, he handed over majority of drugs to the other three. He was following them in a separate rickshaw. When caught, he feigned ignorance. However, we had been monitoring him for weeks and had identified that he was the key player," said an officer.
Shukur, who previously served a prison sentence for drug-related offences, revealed the drug's origin to police. Saddam Hussain and Sabir Hussain are brothers. The accused mainly targeted migrant workers to sell the drugs.
"We have been conducting 'Clean Perumbavoor', a campaign against drug abuse, in the region. It is not a coincidence that we managed to arrest the accused with such a huge quantity. Surveillance and research of weeks went into tracing them and finally arresting them," said Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya.

Most heroin users don't know about the harmful effects of the drugs, he said. We are planning to conduct awareness campaigns too, he added.
Inspector PJ Kuriakose, sub-inspector Unnikrishnan, ASIs KA Noushad and PA Abdul Manaf, senior CPOs Varghese T Venatt, TA Afsal, Benny Isaac, Mahin Shah, KS Anoop, KR Rahul and CPOs KR Vipin and Jose Abraham were involved in the operation.
Heroin remains one of the most widely injected opioids, posing a risk of spreading HIV due to unsafe use of needles.
The detection of HIV in 10 injecting drug users recently in Malappuram highlights the danger of the drug, which is seeing a considerable rise in Ernakulam district.
According to excise department statistics, over 805 grams of heroin were seized in 2024 across the state, and over 50% (441 grams) of the seizure was from Ernakulam district. Heroin reaches the district mainly through migrant labourers. The main source of heroin reaching Ernakulam is Assam.
Two Assam natives were arrested on Monday with 21 grams of heroin.

Six interstate drug peddlers held in H'bag
1 2 Hazaribag: A total of six drug peddlers were arrested with 15 kg opium valued at Rs 1.5 crore. Contraband, including 28.57 kg raw materials, three motorcycles, six mobile phones, and Rs 66,000 were seized, SP Anjani Anjan said on Thursday. SP Anjani said, "A team led by Hazaribag (headquarters) SDPO Amit Kumar Anand conducted searches at Lohsinghna, Korrah, and Sadar police station areas. Four smugglers were held from Lohsinghna. They were identified as Pintu Kumar Dangi (25) and Mukul Dangi (28), both residents of Bariatu village under Chatra (Sadar), besides Avinash Kumar (19) and Rahul Pandey (21), both residing in Giddor of Chatra district. Mukul had a criminal record at Ghaziabad police station under the NDPS Act. Avinash and Rahul had six criminal cases against them." "In Korrah, 2.5 kg opium, materials for making opium doda weighing 21.7gm, and Rs 66,000 in cash were confiscated. The arrested were identified as Rahul Yadav (23) and Mohammed Arshad Ansari of Thotwa village under Katkamsandi police station limits. Rahul Yadav belonged to Kendua in Chatra," he added. The SP further said, "From Lohsinghna, 10.8 kg opium and doda valued at 6.67 lakh were seized." Preliminary probe found that the consignment was being transported from Chatra to across the country, police said.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 5 (ANI): After Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to law student Sharmistha Panoli, West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday said, 'justice has been served today'. In a post on X, Suvendu Adhikari said, 'Justice has been served today - Sharmistha Panoli, a law student, aged about 22 years, has been released on interim bail by the Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta.' He called her arrest 'police atrocities' and said she was wrongly arrested for exercising her right to free speech. He accused Kolkata Police of acting to please political leaders. 'This is a case of police atrocities as an innocent young lady, for using her freedom of speech and expression, has been illegally arrested by the Kolkata Police and was sent to judicial custody. This is yet another example of police overzealousness and eagerness to please their political masters,' the post reads. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and West Bengal BJP Legal Cell member Sanjukta Samanta filed an FIR against Wazahat Khan, who filed an FIR against Sharmistha Panoli, at two Police Stations, Ballygunje Police Station, Kolkata and Howrah Police Station.
