Dalbeattie Tennis Club competition for prestigious Dan Maskell Trophy
Dalbeattie Tennis Club's most prestigious competition, the Dan Maskell Cup, was played for recently with competitors from all over the south of Scotland joining players from the home club.
The competition is played between mixed doubles – and in the final, Johnny Short and Lisa Campbell from the Borders played Stevie White and Maureen Johnstone from Dalbeatte.
Stevie and Mo had had a gruelling semi-final and that perhaps contributed to them losing to Johnny and Lisa. Congratulations to them on their fifth win at this event.
All proceeds from the entry fees, catering and tombola went to the Dan Maskell Trust which supports disabled people getting involved with tennis and which was championed by the club's late president Keith Thom.
The club would like to thank everybody who contributed.

NDMA issues advisory to stop tourism to mountainous regions
ISLAMABAD: Following the deaths of at least 344 people in various flash flood incidents triggered by heavy monsoon rains across northern Pakistan in the past 48 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in line with the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saturday, issued an advisory to restrict tourism to mountainous regions. According to the daily monsoon situation report released here, the NDMA said that at least 151 more people were reported dead and 120 injured by the provincial authorities including Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GDMA) and State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), taking the national death tally to 645 and injuries to 905. The PDMA KPK has reported 144 more deaths, of which, 126 in Buner, Shangla 12, Swat five and Mansehra one. GDMA reported five deaths, of which, four in district Ghizer and one in district Shigar, while SDMA reported on death in district Havweli. Of total 137 injuries, KPK reported 120 injuries all in district Buner, GDMA reported 17 injuries including 10 in Shigar and seven in Ghizer. Moreover, in the past 24 hours, a total of 50 houses were damaged, of which, 24 in KPK, 16 in G-B, seven in AJK and three in Islamabad. Moreover, 110 livestock also perished in the floodwaters, of which, 61 in KPK and 49 in Sindh. Following the release of fresh flooding related data, this year at least 645 people have lost their lives, of which, 383 in KPK, 164 in Punjab, 28 in Sindh, 28 in G-B, 20 in Balochistan, 14 in Kashmir and eight in Islamabad. Out of total 905 injures, Punjab has reported 582, KPK 232, Sindh 40, G-B 30, AJK 4, Balochistan 4 and Islamabad three. Of total 1,913 houses damaged 637 fully and 1,276 partially. Moreover, the flooding has also resulted in the killing of 587 livestock, of which, 110 in the past 24 hours. 10 killed as cloudbursts, torrential rains wreak havoc in GB, Kashmir The seventh spell of monsoon rains wreaked havoc in the upper regions of the country, with cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods claiming lives in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said. Most were killed in flash floods and collapse of houses, while at least 120 others were injured, as Pakistan experienced more rain than usual during the current monsoon season, washing away roads and buildings. According to details, the NDMA spokesperson has made it clear that the restrictions would be imposed on tourism activities in the calamity-hit areas in a bid to ensure the safety of the masses. The NDMA has directed the concerned authorities to take immediate actions to ensure restriction of the public movement in dangerous places during the monsoon spell. Meanwhile, the NDMA said that tourism restrictions can be imposed under Section 144 if important. The NDMA has asked the masses to avoid travelling to the flood-hit areas. Economic boost: Tanveer pushes for greater autonomy for LGs
KARACHI: SM Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief of United Business Group, emphasized the need for devolving powers to lower tiers of governance to bolster the country's economy. Speaking at a press conference at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Tanveer pointed out that despite a significant increase in population from 32 million to 240 million, the country's administrative structure remains unchanged with only four provinces. 'The country has vast mineral resources worth billions of dollars, and every division has economic potential,' Tanveer said. 'No administrator can single-handedly drive economic growth; it requires local ownership and empowerment.' Tanveer expressed FPCCI's support for creating new provinces if the government believes it can stimulate economic progress. He stressed that a strong economy is crucial for Pakistan to compete with regional rivals, particularly India. 'We need to become an Asian Tiger to strengthen our economy and tackle our enemies,' Tanveer said, adding that a conference would like be held in Islamabad soon to discuss ways in this regards and added that parliamentarians would also be invited. Jinnah Medical Complex: Chinese firm donates world-class concept design
ISLAMABAD: In a move hailed as a symbol of deepening Pakistan-China relations, a Chinese firm on Saturday donated a world-class concept design for Islamabad's forthcoming Jinnah Medical Complex - a tertiary care and research facility envisioned to transform healthcare provision in the capital. At a high-level review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, representatives from the Chinese company Hongkong-AOHUA, which has designed over 1,000 hospitals globally over the past three decades, presented their proposal free of charge. The gesture was described by the prime minister as 'a living testament to the enduring friendship and people-to-people bond between Pakistan and China.' The proposed design includes features aligned with global standards, and incorporates future-ready provisions such as pandemic response infrastructure, artificial intelligence integration, and digital connectivity with other major hospitals in the city. 'This is not just a blueprint for a building,' said Sharif. 'It is a gift to the people of Pakistan - one that will be remembered by every citizen and patient who benefits from its services.' The design, which emphasizes sustainability, includes plans for solar energy usage, advanced water recycling, and efficient natural lighting. The prime minister expressed satisfaction with the inclusion of green spaces and climate-conscious planning, and directed authorities to ensure that environmental protection, water conservation, and resource optimization are prioritised throughout the project. Sharif also ordered a technical review of the proposed plans and instructed that construction be completed within a defined timeframe. Further directives included fully digitising the facility and linking it with Islamabad's broader healthcare system. The meeting was attended by senior government officials including federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Cheema, and Shaza Fatima Khawaja, as well as Minister of State for Health Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath. Also present were Professor Dr Saeed Akhtar, Chair of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute, and Dr Liu Zhangpei, CEO of Hongkong-AOHUA, along with a delegation from the firm.
