Terengganu Umno Youth chief apologises over flag gaffe

The Star5 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Umno Youth has apologised for posting on social media an image that depicted the Jalur Gemilang with only 12 stripes instead of the official 14.
In a statement on Facebook, Terengganu Umno Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera admitted the oversight and accepted full responsibility.
'We apologise for the mistake in the number of stripes on the Jalur Gemilang in our earlier post.
'The error was unintentional and happened during the design process,' he said, adding that the post had been replaced with the correct version of the flag.
"We will not defend the designer although he did it for free.'
Tengku Haphiz assured that the division would be more careful in future posts to prevent similar mistakes.
'There are two stripes missing, and I have confirmed the mistake came from the person who designed the poster.
"We take responsibility,' he said.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh said the matter should not end with just an apology and called for the individual responsible to face appropriate action, stressing that accountability must be upheld regardless of party affiliation.

PM gives warning after damage done

Good morning. Here's what you should know today. Key Highlights PM gives warning after damage done MIC, MCA warming up to PN PM gives warning after damage done Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim gave a "warning" on Friday for authorities to take "strong action" against those who incite hatred in the country. Though he shied away from naming names, he is most likely referring to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh - who has been fanning racial sentiments over the two upside down Jalur Gemilang gaffes. But just like in the previous rows over the KK Mart 'Allah' socks, Teresa Kok's remarks about halal certification, and guidelines for Muslims at interfaith events, Anwar is only speaking up after the damage is done. The prime minister and his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had ample time to put their foot down and rebuke Akmal or call for calm. But instead, Anwar's warning came a day after Akmal, Umno Youth, and Bersatu Youth staged a rally in Penang that forced a whole row of shops to close. Akmal has been called up by police for investigations, but don't hold your breath. The Umno Youth chief was also probed last year for sedition in the KK Mart socks row, but no charges were ever filed. HIGHLIGHTS MIC, MCA warming up to PN While Akmal is busy scaring away non-Malays from supporting the government, BN's non-Malay components are also toying with the exit. MIC is engaging in informal talks with Perikatan Nasional over its future. Meanwhile, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker - who has been antagonising the party leadership to quit BN - also had some kind words for PN-component PAS. He said that compared to Akmal, the Islamist party appeared to be more rational and composed in their words and deeds. This is, of course, ignoring all previous instances where PAS has fanned racial and religious sentiments against non-Malays and non-Muslims, of which there are too many to list. [Watch] Malay Man's Viral Video Criticises UMNO Youth Leader Over Flag Controversy

Subscribe to our FREE A Penangite has gone viral after posting a scathing video criticising UMNO Youth chief Akmal Saleh over his handling of the upside-down flag incident in Penang. The drama began when UMNO Youth leader Dr Akmal Saleh led a demonstration outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas after an elderly Malaysian Chinese man accidentally hung the Malaysian flag upside down. In a 1-minute, 33-second video that has gained widespread online support, the Malay man directly addressed Akmal. If there are provocations or fights, who will suffer? It's us ordinary Penang people. Akmal, do you even care? After your team messes things up, you just go back to Malacca. What about us? He made several pointed observations: On Forgiveness: 'We also treasure our country's glorious stripes. The old man has already apologised, and the hardware store even hung up a giant flag.' On Human Error: 'Everyone makes mistakes in life – wearing clothes backwards, wrong shoes, hats upside down. Even your own team has designed wrong flags before.' On Escalation: 'The old man did wrong, but accepting apologies is more noble than endless punishment.' Why This Tiny State Gets Race Relations Right The critic went on to emphasise Penang's delicate racial harmony. Penang is very small. Racial harmony has always received special attention here. In Penang, everyone lives in harmony – no one dominates anyone. He questioned whether politicians were truly concerned about national unity or merely seeking political points. The video has received widespread praise from the public across racial lines, with many agreeing that the incident should have been resolved quietly after the apology was made. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over racial sensitivity in Malaysia, particularly regarding national symbols and the balance between accountability and forgiveness in multicultural communities. The hardware store owner had already apologised for the mistake and corrected the flag display, leading many to question whether the political demonstration was necessary or helpful for national unity. Fahmi: Fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride

He said the people should instead display the flag with pride. 'Be brave when you wave the national flag. Do not let any party threaten or intimidate you for putting up the flag,' he told a press conference while attending a community event in Lembah Pantai here yesterday. Fahmi was commenting on the recent incident in Penang, where a shop owner came under fire after images of him hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside-down went viral. He said some people might be hesitant to fly the flag because a small group of individuals had tried to stir up sentiment and exploit the situation to intimidate others. Women proudly waving the Jalur Gemilang during the event. — RAJA FAISAL HISHAN/The Star Fahmi urged Malaysians to help one another instead of making such issues viral. 'Let's always remember to understand each other, maintain a harmonious environment and obey the rules,' he said. Fahmi also called on the public not to take the law into their own hands, urging them to trust the authorities to carry out their duties. At the event, Fahmi handed over Madani aid, which included monetary assistance and household items, to 10 families. He said the community programme, held over the weekend and focused on traditional arts and cultural activities, was aimed at rekindling society's love, particularly among the younger generation, for these activities.
