Fisherman lands enormous 56-pound almaco jack, breaking state record
Warren Poirier of Charles City, Virginia, caught a 56-pound, 4.8-ounce almaco jack in the state of North Carolina.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's (NCDEQ) Division of Marine Fisheries recently certified the new record for the fish.
Poirier was fishing at the "The Rocks" in the Outer Banks along with Captain James Bowman, according to an NCDEQ press release.
The fish struck Poirier's Zest brand jig as he was battling the amaco jack, also known as a seriola rivoliana, for 45 minutes.
Poirier also used his Shimano Trevala rod and Saltist 5000 reel with an 80-pound braid, the release noted.
The fish stretched 46 inches fork length, from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail, with a 31-inch girth.
Almaco jacks have long bodies with a dusky color and light amber/olive stripes down their sides, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries.
North Carolina's previous almaco jack record was recorded in 2024 at 33 pounds and 12.6 ounces, according to the NCDEQ press release.
Poirier weighed his fish at the Teach's Lair Marina in Hatteras.
Almaco jacks can grow up to a little over 5 feet long and up to 136 pounds, according to NOAA Fisheries.
They can be found in the Atlantic, Gulf of America, Pacific Islands and occasionally Southern California.

Dustin Poirier's charity gives away more than 1,200 backpacks to school students
Dustin Poirier is keeping busy after his UFC retirement. Longtime veteran lightweight Poirier retired from MMA competition in July following a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway in their trilogy bout at UFC 319 in New Orleans. Poirier (30-10 MMA, 22-9 UFC) got a dream final fight scenario in his home state of Louisiana, and he received a heavy dosage of support throughout fight week and in the aftermath. Much of that support has been a product of Poirier having such close ties to his community, especially in Lafayette. "The Diamond" has been acknowledged with awards for his charitable deeds during his career, and things haven't changed after hanging up the gloves. On Tuesday, Poirier and his The Good Fight Foundation hosted its annual Back to School Supply Drive, with more than 1,200 backpacks containing school supplies and more were distributed to those in need. Out gay Olympic figure skater Paul Poirier just proposed to his boyfriend and shared the happy news with the rest of the world with a cute Instagram post of the two men showing off their new engagement rings. 'We did a thing (he said yes),' Poirier wrote on social media, announcing his engagement to boyfriend Kevin. Poirier's figure skating partner, Piper Gilles, was one of the first to congratulate the lovebirds, commenting, 'So happy for you two!! You've deserved all the love.' The 33-year-old world champion shared the news with those closest to him before making the announcement public. The couple has yet to announce a wedding date. 'It was a very casual proposal at home during our evening routine,' Poirier told Outsports. 'It was really nice to share that quiet moment together, and then to share the news with our families and closest friends. We're both very excited!' It takes a lot of guts to come out as an athlete. Luckily, more and more LGBTQ+ Olympic athletes are taking the plunge. In fact, four Olympic athletes kissed their partners in front of the world during the last Olympics, six lesbian couples who competed at the Paris Olympics, and gold medalist Jade Carey hard launched her new girlfriend just this past March. Poirier may be a fairly private person and a bit of an introvert, but he came out publicly back in 2021, a year ahead of going to the Beijing Winter Olympics. '[Being a gay athlete] hasn't been something that I've really talked about very much, especially in a public setting,' Poirier said at the time. 'I've had this attitude that my private life is my private life and my life outside of skating is my life outside of skating. I haven't necessarily allowed all of those things to [blend] together. I think with the lead-up to the Olympic Games in the next year, I definitely see opportunities to share what we do and who we are to a much wider audience, and that opportunity is not lost on me.' Poirier and Gilles are currently working to land a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
