Max Kennedy shoots 60 to take the lead in European Challenge Tour event
Kennedy, 23, was within a whisker of getting home in 59 at Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André in northern France.
The Royal Dublin golfer needed one more birdie on the 18th to do it, but he had to settle for par and a four-shot lead ahead of England's James Morrison.
Kennedy's card was dotted with six birdies and, remarkably, two eagles, which came on the par-five seventh and 11th.
Another Irishman, 24-year-old Mark Power, is in the mix too. The Kilkenny native is four-under after starting with a 66.

UFC icon pours cold water on Conor McGregor return rumours with savage put-down
UFC icon Daniel Cormier has poured cold water on rumours of a Conor McGregor return. The former UFC double champion has been heavily linked with a return to the Octagon in recent times. McGregor rejoined the UFC's drug testing pool this summer and has hinted on social media that he wants to fight at the 'white house' UFC card which is said to be taking place next year. McGregor hasn't fought since losing twice to Dustin Poirier in 2021, and while he talks a big game online, Cormier doesn't expect to see the Irishman back in action anytime soon. 'Conor says he wants to fight all the time, and everybody jumps to it, but it's like, he wants to stay relevant, he wants to stay in the news, he wants the notoriety of being Conor McGregor without having to be Conor McGregor,' Cormier said on the Club Shay Shay podcast. Daniel Cormier laughs at Ian Garry's son's impression. (Image: Ian Garry Instagram) Continuing, Cormier said 'That kind of sucks because when he was the man, I bet you tapped in, I bet you tapped into the UFC more than ever because he could sell a fight.' A former two-weight UFC champion, McGregor hasn't fought in the promotion since snapping his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He was due to return to action last summer, but pulled out of his fight with Michael Chandler with a toe injury. The Dubliner's fighting record has been patchy at best for almost a decade now. Since his lightweight title win in 2016, McGregor has picked up just a single victory over Donald Cerrone in 2020, and has tasted defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov, Poirier and Floyd Mayweather.

MMA legend refuses to speak Conor McGregor's name due to animosity
Khabib Nurmagomedov's hatred for Conor McGregor is so strong that he reportedly refuses to mention the Irishman by name. McGregor and Nurmagomedov have been rivals for many years, with the build-up to their 2018 fight by far the most fractious and controversial in the promotion's history. The animosity between the pair has been simmering in the seven years since Khabib's dominant submission win, and it doesn't take much for the venom in the rivalry to bubble over. Earlier this year for example, McGregor launched into an expletive laden social media rant containing racial slurs as he slammed Khabib and Derry fighter Paul Hughes for exchanging pleasantries after Hughes' world title fight loss to Usman Nurmagomedov - Khabib's cousin. UFC legend Daniel Cormier is a close friend of Nurmagomedov and on a recent edition of the Club Shay Shay podcast, he revealed that Khabib to this day, refuses to speak McGregor's name. (Image: (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)) 'Khabib won't say Conor's name still today. He still does not say his name. He hates him. They're in the octagon and Conor whispers after the third round to Khabib, 'It's just business.' Khabib goes, 'No it ain't.' Khabib was holding him in that (rear naked choke) and said, 'I kicked your ass.'' Elsewhere on the podcast, Cormier took another dig at McGregor, claiming that the Irishman wants to talk the talk but doesn't want to walk the walk and actually set foot inside a UFC Octagon. 'Conor says he wants to fight all the time, and everybody jumps to it, but it's like, he wants to stay relevant, he wants to stay in the news, he wants the notoriety of being Conor McGregor without having to be Conor McGregor,' said former two-weight UFC champion Cormier. McGregor has teased a return to the UFC in recent times and has re-entered the anti-doping testing pool which would allow him to fight again for the organisation once he submits six months of clean tests. The Irishman hasn't fought since 2021 and has won just one fight in nine years.

Ryder Cup team selection picture clearer but few key questions remain unanswered
Luke Donald is keeping a keen eye on potential Ryder Cup players at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo this week. The event marks the end of Team Europe's qualification period ahead of next month's Ryder Cup which will be staged on the Black Course at Oakmont Country Club, New York (Sept 26-28). The top six players on the European Rankings on Sunday night will secure their spots with Captain Luke Donald then due to select his six Captain's Picks on Monday September 1. The top five in the rankings Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton have already made Donald's team. Shane Lowry occupies the final automatic qualification spot, however Rasmus Højgaard, currently eighth in the Rankings, is teeing it up at The Belfry and would overtake the Irishman if he earns 13.7 points or more. Højgaard will need to finish 28th or better, or 29th tied with one other player to join the five already qualified for Team Europe. Matt Fitzpatrick is 12th in the rankings andn is another hoping to impress Donald and earn a fourth Ryder Cup appearance. The 30-year-old has enjoyed an upturn in form recently with ties for fourth place at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open Championship forming part of a four-event stretch of top ten finishes. European Captain Donald is also in the field and while he will look to maintain a focus on his own game, the quest to lead Team Europe to a second victory is also at the forefront of his mind. Says Donald: "I've many good memories of watching some iconic moments in Ryder Cups at this very course, down there on the 18th hole. So, yeah, very special to be here because of that. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy lead the celebrations with the Ryder Cup after Europe's win in Rome in 2023 (Image: ©INPHO/Matteo Ciambelli) "I am very pleased (with how Ryder Cup qualifying is going). Again, it looks like it's going to be a good group of those guys from Rome that are probably going to play in this one as well "The top five who have already qualified all were in Rome. There's a bunch of other guys that are playing very well, high up on the points list. So very happy with the way things are going. "And every Ryder Cup there's always a push by some people that have a good opportunity to claim their place on Ryder Cup team. "It's a little bit of a headache for me sometimes, but a good headache. Again, the more options that we have for those picks, the better it is, really." Matt Fitzpatrick is looking to make a fourth Ryder Cup team following on from 2016, 2021 and 2023. "It's an important week (for Ryder Cup). There's a lot of scenarios at play. "Obviously playing this week and next week is important for me to continue that to make sure that Luke knows I'm in and around the team. So, we'll give it a good go this week and see what happens." Dane Niklas Nørgaard is the defending champion at The Belfry, having secured his maiden DP World Tour title last year in dramatic fashion. The 33-year-old recovered from a double bogey on the 16th hole to claim a memorable one-stroke victory and become the third Danish winner of the Betfred British Masters. "It was the best golfing week of my life. So, it's special to be back. Been here a few times now, and it's one of my favourite stops on Tour," says Nørgaard. "It was a tough Sunday (last week) but it's such a good week. It's so nice. I don't know how much you got of it on TV but we were just applauded on to every green. "Don't see that very often and don't feel that. So very thankful for that. Game was better, and yeah, as I just said, been really looking forward to play these European tournaments now. "It's a good test, you need a little bit of everything. It's weird because just some courses really suit your eyes visually, and I think this one really suits my eye off the tee. "Last Fall, my driving was the best it's ever been and I've been struggling a little bit more with that a little. So hopefully when it comes to these tee shots, I can get that a little bit back. That's what I'm hoping for. "But just as I said, so many good memories from here, and yeah, it's one of my favourite courses, obviously, from last year, but also just in general."
