AFL fixture: Power farewell clash headlines Friday double header

The AFL will attempt to turbocharge the final Sunday of its round 24 with two big finals-shaping encounters in a weekend that will also have a Friday night double header that includes a Collingwood-Melbourne game.
The league is set to release the round 24 fixture on Wednesday and clubs have been told it will feature the Essendon v Carlton contest as a standalone Thursday game.
Friday's fixture will see a farewell to Ken Hinkley and Travis Boak as the Power hosts Gold Coast, as well as the Pies-Demons clash in a double-header.
The Pies might still have to win that game to secure a top two position given the tight finals race.
As forecast there will be two big Sunday clashes including the Western Bulldogs v Fremantle clash in an afternoon slot then the Brisbane v Hawthorn night clash at the Gabba.
The round will finish with the Wednesday night clash in the week before the pre-finals bye between Gold Coast and Essendon, which might still decide the Suns' ladder finish.
The following night the AFL will host the AFL awards on the same night as Seven's new legends game featuring an array of former stars.
The league was still working through the round 24 fixture on Tuesday night and had not ruled out late game swaps but clubs expect it will go ahead as forecast.
The Suns were asked about their preference for playing both games across a weekend that sees them play two fixtures because of the delayed Cyclone Alfred game.
Port Adelaide was always keen to play the Suns clash on the Friday night to maximise the attendance of that farewell clash for Hinkley.
Hinkley is adamant he is not keen to be part of any farewell proceedings and will only take part in his usual mid-week press conference and post-match interviews.
But now Boak's retirement means that he will retire with 387 games and it will be a joint farewell to the two stalwarts.
The Suns are happy to play the Power with a six-day break to maximise their recovery leading into that clash.
Then they will have a five-day break leading into the Essendon clash at People First Stadium, with Essendon to have a six-day break before their second clash of that round.
Ideally for the Suns the Dons would have warehoused many of their stars before that round 24 clash, leading to a perfect run-in for the Suns before finals.
But if any of their players are concussed in that clash they will miss the club's historic first finals performance. Read related topics: Adelaide

AFL champion Jason Dunstall says Nathan Buckley is ‘missing coaching'

A return to coaching for Collingwood great Nathan Buckley is growing momentum after a strong endorsement from another AFL champion. Buckley on Wednesday morning declared he would take a phone call from Melbourne in the wake of it sacking premiership coach Simon Goodwin on Monday night. The former Collingwood coach said he had a desire to coach again and labelled the Demons 'a compelling case'. 'I would take the call, I would have a chat, but a lot would have to fall into place to leave this position of comfort I have found,' Buckley told SEN on Wednesday. 'It's there (the desire to coach) – otherwise it would be an easy no. I can't lie – when (Tuesday) happened I knew this would all come around again.' Buckley was linked to Tasmania earlier this year and he has been raised for almost every vacant position since his exit from the Magpies in 2021. On Thursday, AFL champion Jason Dunstall said Buckley was 'missing coaching' and expected his return was only a matter of time. 'Bucks would take a call from anyone, I would think,' Dunstall said after being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. 'I have a feeling he's missing coaching, he loves it and he's so intense about it. 'I suspect he'll be spoken to by a number of clubs. Next year? I don't know, but he will be in the coaches' box again, I am pretty comfortable of that.' Buckley coached the Magpies between 2012 and 2021 after his 280-game playing career.

Will Hulbert seeks redemption in Townsville Cup after Mackay Cup disappointment

Will Hulbert was kicking stones after the unplaced run of his Mackay Cup favourite. Quite literally. Brisbane trainer Hulbert was so dark on how the race panned out, he set off on foot across some local cane fields and walked much of the way to Mackay Airport. He wasn't in much of a mood for company. Kipling's Journey, a stable stalwart who has won almost $300,000 in prizemoney, had missed the kick and was then hunted forward but was taken on and spent too many petrol tickets to be a force in the final stages of the 2000m race. But Hulbert, who co-trains with dad Peter, said Saturday's $150,000 Townsville Cup (2000m) represents a strong chance for redemption. After competing in both the Rockhampton and Mackay Cups, and giving the Townsville Cup a crack on Saturday, it is likely Kipling's Journey will keep winding his way north for a Cairns Cup mission later this month. But first things first. 'After the Mackay Cup, I didn't want to see anyone and the surcharges on Ubers were through the roof, so I just started walking towards the airport,' Hulbert said. 'I walked through a sugar cane field, felt my hamstring tightening up and arrived at the airport with my phone about to die which wasn't ideal as it had my plane ticket on it. 'Hopefully Townsville is a better experience on Saturday. 'The horse pulled up well from his run in Mackay and he had a good gallop on Monday morning. 'We finished fourth in Rocky and fifth in Mackay so hopefully he will win the next two ones in Townsville and Cairns.' Ahead of the Townsville Cup, Hulbert is adamant he wants jockey Adin Thompson to seek cover on Kipling's Journey. He insists he doesn't have to lead. 'Over shorter trips he leads, but once he is up to this sort of trip he needs to be ridden with cover,' Hulbert said. 'To be honest, if the horse relaxed a bit better I think he would run even further than this.' Kipling's Journey has drawn barrier nine in the Townsville Cup field which will have 16 starters.
