Report: Red Sox trading Rafael Devers to Giants in surprise blockbuster

Reuters17 hours ago

June 15 - The Boston Red Sox are trading All-Star slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal that includes right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks going to Boston, according to ESPN.
The Red Sox will also acquire 23-year-old left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, along with other unnamed players.
Devers, 28, is batting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs this season. However, he has been at odds with the Red Sox front office after declining to play first base following the season-ending injury to Triston Casas on May 2.

Healthy crowds and Messi mania lift Club World Cup, but quality gap shows

MIAMI, June 16 (Reuters) - The expanded Club World Cup has kicked off with healthy crowds, "Messi mania" and a festival atmosphere in Miami, giving an early vindication to world football body FIFA after fears of empty stands and global disinterest. FIFA controversially awarded Lionel Messi's Inter Miami a backdoor route into the tournament, ensuring the sport's biggest name would be there after he propelled soccer to new heights in a country often ambivalent to the world's most popular game. Some 61,000 fans packed the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday to watch the Argentine and teammates play Egyptian giants Al-Ahly in a goalless draw. Another strong crowd turned out on Sunday for the clash between Paris St Germain and Atletico Madrid, which ended in a one-sided 4-0 win for the Champions League winners. However, Bayern Munich's 10-0 demolition of semi-professional Auckland City underscored the worrying gulf in quality between some of the competing clubs. But the opening weekend largely delivered what FIFA had hoped for: vibrant crowds and global representation. South American supporters made their presence especially felt. More than 1,000 Boca Juniors fans in blue and gold turned Miami Beach into a party strip on Sunday ahead of their opening match, singing club anthems and waving flags in scenes reminiscent of a World Cup carnival. "Wherever you go, Boca is here,' Gaston San Paul, a fan who flew in from Entre Rios in Argentina, told Reuters. 'Wherever we are we do this,' he added, referring to the "Banderazo" (flag party), a fan gathering destined to mark territory ahead of a game. Boca and Real Madrid games were among the top early ticket sellers, according to FIFA, which said that top markets after the U.S. were Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. Talk of empty stands was at least provisionally dismissed as well as heightened anxiety in the immigrant-heavy Miami area following recent federal immigration raids. At the heart of the opening weekend buzz was Messi, whose presence has elevated Inter Miami's profile and guaranteed global glamour for the tournament. Messi, who received a standing ovation before kickoff, was unable to find the net against Al-Ahly but provided flashes of brilliance in a tightly contested, physical match. FIFA is banking not only on Messi's star power but also on a radical new broadcast strategy. The tournament is being streamed for free worldwide by DAZN in a $1 billion deal. That agreement followed Saudi Arabia's SURJ Sports Investment, a subsidiary of the country's Public Investment Fund (PIF), acquiring a minority stake in DAZN for a reported $1 billion — another marker of the kingdom's growing investment footprint in sport. The partnership, one of the largest broadcast packages in football history, is central to FIFA's push to maximize digital engagement and position the Club World Cup as a global spectacle ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. The $1 billion prize money, which ensures a hefty $125 million for the winners, was an obvious incentive for the European clubs. "There's a lot of money at stake. If you have the chance to earn a lot of money at a tournament, you should take the chance," former Bayern legend Karl Heinz Rummenigge said in the run-up. DAZN has yet to provide viewership data. While the crowds gave FIFA reason to be cheerful, the Bayern Munich v Auckland City match raised awkward questions about the tournament's balance as the German champions obliterated their opponents 10-0. Despite the lopsided contest in Cincinnati, the overall mood among organizers was one of optimism, calling the opening weekend a resounding success. Many Floridians, however, did not know a global soccer event was taking place in their state. "There is a World Cup? Hockey?," said one person working in a restaurant in Miami Beach. "This tournament is new, and it is different. It is the very first time clubs and players from all over the world have had the chance to face each other in competitive matches on a global stage," FIFA said, referring to the 32-club format after the previous editions featured seven. With group matches continuing through the week and Boca's opener against Benfica expected to draw another bumper crowd in Miami later on Monday, FIFA will be hoping to build on the early momentum — and avoid more one-sided encounters like the one in Cincinnati as European teams appear to be a level above those from other continents'.

UFC 317: Ilia Topuria vs Charles Oliveira start time, fight card and how to watch

Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira will clash in one of the biggest MMA fights of the year this month, as they vie for the vacant lightweight title in the main event of UFC 317. When Topuria vacated the featherweight belt in February, he immediately set his sights on the lightweight strap, which was soon relinquished by pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev – who is similarly eyeing a title shot at a higher weight. While Makhachev vs Topuria would have been one of the most fascinating fights in the sport, Topuria vs Oliveira is a strong consolation. The Spanish-Georgian is unbeaten, while Brazil's Oliveira is a former 155lb champion and holds the records for the most finishes and submissions in UFC history. Furthermore, Topuria enters Las Vegas on the back of two straight knockouts of featherweight greats – Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway – while Oliveira dominated Michael Chandler to earn this shot at a second run with the lightweight belt. And in the co-main event of UFC 317, imperious flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja looks to extend his reign as he faces a dangerous striker in Kai Kara-France, whom he outpointed in an Ultimate Fighter bout in 2016. Here's all you need to know. When is UFC 317? UFC 317 will take place on Saturday 28 June at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The early prelims are scheduled to begin at 11pm BST (3pm PT / 5pm CT / 6pm ET), with the regular prelims following at 1am BST on Sunday (5pm PT / 7pm CT / 8pm ET on Saturday). The main card is then due at 3am BST on Sunday (7pm PT / 9pm CT / 10pm ET on Saturday). How can I watch it? The card will air live on TNT Sports in the UK, with the broadcaster's app and website also streaming the fights. Discovery+ will also air the action in the UK. In the US, ESPN+ will stream the event live, as will the UFC's Fight Pass. Odds Topuria – 1/4; Oliveira – 3/1 Pantoja – 2/5; Kara-France – 2/1 Via Betway. . Dolphins' Bradley Chubb makes startling admission about team's 2024 'culture change': 'We were lying'

Coming off their second straight Wild Card-round exit in the NFL playoffs, the Miami Dolphins vowed to change their culture heading into the 2024 season. Now, after missing the postseason entirely last year, at least one member of the 2025 Dolphins is ready to admit the truth. 'I'm going to say last year, we were lying, honestly,' said outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, who missed the entire 2024 season after a 2023 knee injury. 'Point blank, period. We felt it. 'We put our toe in the water, but we didn't dive all the way in,' he continued. 'We didn't get all the way there with each other. We weren't making the effort to go the extra mile.' Chubb didn't specify who failed to live up to the team's newly adopted standards, but there are suspects. For instance, receiver Tyreek Hill took himself out of the final game of the season before hinting at his imminent departure, only to reverse course this offseason and claim he's out 'to prove' himself all over again in Miami this season. Beyond that, the team's other issues were mostly related to injuries along the offensive line and at running back, not to mention quarterback Tua Tagovailoa 's continued battle with concussions. Regardless, Chubb sees this year's team as being genuinely more dedicated to the task of winning than last year's. 'I would say this year we're doing that [culture change],' he said. 'I'm not sure how it's going to turn out for us, but we are putting forth that foot to change it. 'If it works out, it's going to work out. If it doesn't, we're going to get back to the drawing board and make sure it works out.' Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel did not seem too upset to hear Chubb's quote. 'It would have been awesome if he would have told me on the front end when they were lying,' McDaniel said. 'Beyond that, 2024, unless I'm using it directly for an analogy, I'm much more concerned with 2025, he continued. 'I think you do a lot more for the organization if you spend your time thinking forward in terms of not this, that, or the other, or whose fault it was. No, we want it like this, let's do it like this and this is who we are. I don't even — what year did you speak of? I guess I'll read about that in history books.' Miami could boast one of the better defenses in 2025 thanks to Chubb's return to a unit that ranked 10th in points allowed and fourth in yardage in 2024. What's more, Miami added massive Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant in the first round of April's NFL Draft.
