PM to visit 3 countries, including Canada, in 1st foreign trip after Op Sindoor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Canada later next week to attend the G7 Summit, following New Delhi's acceptance of Ottawa's invitation to the annual multilateral gathering, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday. As part of his three-nation tour beginning on Sunday, the Prime Minister will also visit Cyprus and Croatia.The foreign tour, particularly the Canada visit, holds significance as it marks Modi's first overseas trip since India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, and his first visit to Canada since diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Ottawa deteriorated over the Khalistani issue.advertisementIn the second leg of the tour, at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi will visit Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16–17 to participate in the G7 Summit. During the summit, the Prime Minister will present India's stance on key global issues, including energy security, technology, and innovation, the ministry added.
Earlier reports had suggested that Prime Minister Modi was unlikely to attend the G7 Summit in Canada, which would have marked his first absence in six years.The overseas tour will commence with a visit to Cyprus from June 15 to 16, followed by participation in the G7 Summit from June 16 to 17, and will conclude with an official visit to Croatia on June 18.Describing India and Canada as "vibrant democracies", the external affairs ministry on Thursday said New Delhi believes the forthcoming meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and "explore pathways" to reset bilateral ties.advertisementMinistry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this in response to a query during his weekly media briefing."Our prime minister had received a call from the Canadian prime minister last week. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday inaugurated a three-day training programme for party leaders, including Ministers, MPs and MLAs, from Madhya Pradesh. The training camp, being held in Pachmarhi in Narmadapuram district, was announced in the wake of controversial statements by party leaders, including derogatory remarks by State Minister Vijay Shah against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who briefed the media during Operation Sindoor, which drew widespread criticism and the wrath of the Supreme Court. Apart from him, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda and MLA Narendra Prajapati's remarks about Operation Sindoor and the armed forces had drawn criticism from the Opposition, putting the ruling party on the defensive. The Union Home Minister delivered the inaugural address. 'While Amit Shahji did not specifically talk about any particular leader or issue, he said anyone could make mistakes, but it is important not to repeat those,' an MLA from Bhopal, who is at the camp, told The Hindu. Even as party leaders have termed the three-day event a 'routine programme', sources said the camp is aimed at training leaders in public communication, discipline, and discussing sensitive issues. Santhosh, joint general secretary (organisation) Shiv Prakash, and Union Minister and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are scheduled to address various sessions. A State Minister, who is attending the camp, said the event will also include sessions on the 'history and growth of the BJP' and on its government in the State, from the tenure of former CM Uma Bharti to that of the current CM, Mohan Yadav. 'Discipline, restraint' 'The focus is on discipline and restraint while speaking in public. Amid bid to rebuild China ties, Rajnath Singh to attend SCO meet

Singh is likely to have a bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun on the sidelines of the SCO meet on June 24-25, in what will be his first visit as defence minister to China. "The final details are still being worked out," an official said on Saturday. Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif is also slated to attend the SCO meet, which is taking place soon after intense cross-border military hostilities between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10. Both India and Pakistan in 2017 became full members of the SCO, which also includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.
