Paul Nichols dead: Baywatch icon dies less than two weeks after wife's death
The veteran publicist who saved Baywatch from cancellation, Paul Nichols, has died at his home in Weatherford, Texas, at the age of 76.
He died on March 14 but his family only now made the news public. Only 12 days before he died, his wife of 31 years, Linda, passed away.No cause of death has been disclosed as of yet.
In 1991, Nichols, then working for The Lippen Group, played a crucial role in the revival of 'Baywatch' by helping All American Television shift it into first-run syndication. This savvy move breathed new life into the series that NBC had dropped after its initial season.
Thanks to his efforts, the show not only survived but thrived, continuing for another decade until 2001 under the watch of David Hasselhoff and sparking a global phenomenon.
Fellow publicist Les Eisner lauded Nichols' influence to The Hollywood Reporter, saying he "was largely responsible for branding [Baywatch] as the world's most-watched TV series. Whether that was true or not, who knows? But it stuck."
While Paul's life-saving intervention for 'Baywatch' might not have seemed fully validated in 1991, by 1996, the series was reportedly pulling in an incredible 1.1 billion viewers each week, reports the Express.
To this day, 'Baywatch' retains the prestigious Guinness World Record for being the most-watched TV show across the globe.
With a reach spanning 142 countries and available in 44 languages, the show's success spawned the spin-off series 'Baywatch Nights' and a feature film in 2017.
But it wasn't just about viewership; 'Baywatch' turned its cast into international sensations. While David Hasselhoff had already gained fame via 'Knight Rider,' it was 'Baywatch' that cemented him as a global icon, and it introduced stars like Pamela Anderson and Donna D'Errico to the wider world.
Born on March 22, 1948, in Delaware, Paul earned his degree in broadcast journalism from Penn State University in 1970.
He kicked off his career as a DJ before securing a role at the renowned talk show The Mike Douglas Show, based in Philadelphia. In 1980, he relocated to California to work for John Davidson, Douglas' talk-show successor.
Throughout his illustrious career, he also worked with Group W, All American Television and Sony Pictures Television.
Paul's wife Linda, who passed away on March 2 at the age of 77, held a senior position at the TV marketing association Promax. After hanging up their professional hats, the couple moved to Texas to be nearer to her family.
He leaves behind his brother Robert, sister-in-law Denise, nephews Steve and James, and niece Caitlin.

Tom Cruise has once again raised the bar for action stunts, this time by setting a new Guinness World Record for the most burning parachute jumps by an individual. The Mission: Impossible star performed 16 such death-defying leaps during filming of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth chapter in the high-octane franchise. Guinness World Records made the announcement on Thursday, praising Cruise's dedication to authenticity and fearlessness. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!' said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records. 'His absolute focus on pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do is unmatched. It's an honour to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new title.' In the film's dramatic climax, Cruise's character Ethan Hunt faces off against his nemesis Gabriel, portrayed by Esai Morales, high in the skies. The scene culminates with Hunt jumping from a burning plane. After deploying his parachute, the fabric ignites and disintegrates, forcing him to cut away the charred chute and deploy a backup. Cruise, who is a licensed skydiver, executed the stunt 16 times. Each jump involved leaping out of a helicopter while strapped to a parachute soaked in fuel and set ablaze. According to Guinness, no other actor or stunt performer has come close to matching that number of fiery parachute drops. Cruise is certainly willing to push the limit. At one point during filming, director Christopher McQuarrie shared a terrifying moment when he feared Cruise had passed out while filming a death-defying stunt on the wing of a plane. The 2025 Macy's July 4 fireworks will be launched from NYC's East River
Good news for East Siders and Brooklynites: The Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks are returning to the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River for 2025. Specifically, the show will launch from the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and four barges positioned on the lower East River in the Seaport District. Macy's hasn't yet provided a list of best viewing spots, but you can expect miles of prime public viewing. The spectacular display is the largest Independence Day in the nation, which paints the skyline in an extraordinary display of light and sound. It's been a pyrotechnic tradition since 1976 for good reason—the show is truly incredible. Though exact timings haven't been announced, last year's show began at 9:25pm, so keep that in mind when making your plans for Friday, July 4. As for viewing locations, any anywhere with an unobstructed view of the sky above the lower East River should do the trick. In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for additional details on public viewing, as well as a city-sponsored lottery for free public viewing tickets. Last year, the fireworks were hosted on the west side of the city, delighting west siders and New Jerseyans. For a decade prior to that, the fireworks had been launched from the East River, and now they're back. "Macy's doesn't just light up the sky—we ignite a shared tradition," said Will Coss, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks executive producer, in a press release. "By bringing the fireworks to New York City and communities across the country, we create a spectacular event that celebrates joy, unity and togetherness. While the show brings hordes of New Yorkers to sidewalks and viewing parties, it's also broadcast across the nation on NBC and Peacock for all to enjoy beginning at 8pm.

During an appearance on the 'Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky' podcast, Sophia shared: "I had a workplace ongoing trauma revolving around an unending situation with someone old enough to be my father. I was like, 'What is happening?'" Sophia actually had the opportunity to leave the show after two years, but she was determined to continue. The actress - who refused to name the TV show - explained: "I had the opportunity after two years to go. "I did the thing I learned to do and said, 'I will not have my integrity diminished by someone else's behaviour. I will be unflappable. I will come to work and do my job.' And I couldn't." The actress - who played Erin Lindsay on 'Chicago P.D', the NBC police drama, between 2014 and 2017 - said: "To be hit with anxiety in such a way that I could barely be out of the house. If people touched me in public, I would jump out of my skin. I couldn't talk to people anymore. I couldn't talk to strangers anymore. I couldn't be looked at anymore." Sophia found the whole experience to be mentally and physically "exhausting". Article continues below She explained: "Because I had to go to work ready for war all the time, I had to learn where to stand to not get elbowed in the ribs or how to block a scene to not be touched. It was just exhausting." Sophia actually received an apology from a network executive after leaving the show in 2017. She said: "By October [2017], I got a call from an executive apologising for what they'd done and not done. And [they] said, 'We're very aware we just made it out of that unscathed.'"
