Shropshire Council launches consultation on fee for alert bracelet

A 24-hour alert fob system for elderly, disabled and vulnerable people could come with a weekly cost as part of efforts by a council to save money.Shropshire Council has launched a consultation into proposed charges for the Telcare scheme, which is currently free, that would see users paying £3.45 a week as well as a one-off £35 set-up fee. The move comes as the local authority said it needed to save nearly £23m from its yearly budget in the new financial year. The consultation will run until 10 March. The council said it "remains committed to delivering excellent care services" and wants to take on the "input of its residents in shaping the future of Telecare services".
The Telecare system provides users with fobs that are worn as a pendant or around a wrist that are connected to a 24/7 response centre.The round-the-clock monitoring means that if a user has an emergency, such as a fall, they can press the button on the fob to call for assistance.Whilst many users could soon have to pay, those who receive a care package from Shropshire Council or get care services under Section 117 of the Mental Health Act will be exempt from the proposed fees.
The local authority has said social care services account for nearly 80% of the authority's overall budget - with around £4 in every £5 spent on social care. In its savings strategy announced on 15 January, the council stated there were £11m of measures planned that would reduce the anticipated cost of social care services.The council also noted it was one of the only areas where the Telecare service is free and said that the typical charge for the system in other councils ranges from £1.50 to £19 per week.
Councillor Cecilia Motley, cabinet member for adult social care and public health, said the council knows that Telecare is "an important prevention service that supports individuals to live independently".She added that the potential charge "is not about accumulating large sums of revenue but proposing a modest charge like most councils are doing across the country".Telecare users can make their views known in the consultation by email, mail, local libraries and Shropshire Local centres.

"Lauren was just the kindest soul who wanted to live life." Ms Bridges said Lolly's Law would see professionals having detailed and proper training in autism, and how it presents itself in women. It also proposes for anti-ligature doors in psychiatric facilities and for the creation of anti-suicide and self harm hubs, specifically designed for autistic people."We made a pact that together we would change the system," she said. Ms Toale, who raised the petition in Parliament, said the need for change was "so great" and she would continue to fight alongside Ms Bridges to enact the law. "There are about 2,000 people who are in mental health facilities at the moment who are misdiagnosed," she said."We want to build a care system that supports them, not isolates them." Ms Bridges said she was determined to prevent other families from suffering the same loss and pain as hers. "Lauren got lost in the system, and the loss that we feel because of it is just heartbreaking," she said. "But she drives me, at times where I feel like giving up, I have her voice saying come on mummy we can do it."

A Kent university is launching a new midwifery degree which aims to incorporate artificial intelligence and teaching about healthcare Christ Church University (CCCU) says its new course will "ensure that our students are well prepared to navigate the complexities of modern maternity care" when it starts in new course comes after the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which has approved it, withdrew accreditation for a previous CCCU midwifery course in Paul Driscoll-Evans, dean of the university's midwifery school, said it had "worked closely with health leaders across Kent, Medway and at national level" to design the course. "Our new curriculum is built on the principles of innovation, inclusivity, excellence and sustainability, ensuring that our students are well prepared to navigate the complexities of modern maternity care."In May 2023, the Nursing and Midwifery Council highlighted concerns that students were not gaining the expertise needed to deliver safe, effective and kind to the university, the new course will incorporate new technologies including AI and virtual healthcare to prepare prospective midwives for future advances in course will be delivered by the university with input from Kent healthcare services including NHS Kent and Medway, as well as maternity service on the course will also teach about how race, gender and other identities can affect people's experience of course will take on its first cohort of 25 students at the university's Canterbury Campus this year, with another cohort at its Medway campus launching in Fox-Collins, director for maternity, neonatal and women's health services at NHS Kent and Medway, said: "Giving people who are passionate about the midwifery profession the opportunity to undertake their training in the maternity services across Kent and Medway will enrich our workplaces and improve our services further."

Oswestry Balloon Carnival support Nightingale House Hospice

Hot air balloons will fill the skies of Shropshire on Saturday as the ninth year of Oswestry Balloon Carnival opens. The event, held at Cae Glas Park across the weekend, is in aid of Nightingale House Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care services for those with life-limiting illnesses. Someone who knows only too well the impact of the hospice is Lorna Hankey, who was part of the team to suggest the balloon festival back in 2016. The 31-year-old, who works as the safety officer for the event, said she could not fault the hospice after it cared for both her aunt and grandmother who passed in quick succession in 2008. She said: "The services they provide are supportive for both the patients and the families. "Whenever someone has to go into a hospice it's never nice, but the team and the actual hospice is so lovely that you don't go in thinking you're going into a hospice, you go in thinking it's someone's house. "They really take care of family and patients so well." Ms Hankey said she was "very close" to her aunt, who died with bone cancer, and her grandmother, who had bowel cancer. "We lost them within a very short period of time. I think my aunt passed away in [the] August and my nan was the December following," she said. "I was very young at the time and the nurses at the hospice and Macmillan were great, they were so supportive. "They would bend over backwards to support families."Ms Hankey added: "Obviously, you don't want people to pass, but being in the situation we were in, I wouldn't have changed them for the world."I couldn't fault them." Entry to the event is free, although visitors are encouraged to make a voluntary donation of £2 upon entry to support Nightingale House Hospice. In 2024, the event raised £37,000, which Ms Hankey said was the target for 2025 as well. Elise Jackson, Events and Campaigns Manager at Nightingale House Hospice, said the event brought people together and raised "crucial funds".
