Earthquake-hit Myanmar invite foreign investor for rebuilding

The Star2 days ago

PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Myanmar is inviting foreign investors to participate in the redevelopment efforts two months after the devastating earthquake destroyed major infrastructure and left thousands homeless.
Roads, bridges, schools, monasteries, farmland and factories were destroyed when the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the South-East Asian nation on March 28.
State Administration Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing announced strategic plans to channel further humanitarian aid to affected victims and quickly reboot the country's faltering economy.
"Rebuilding means not only repairing the damaged buildings and making efforts to ensure economic recovery but also building a secure and safe nation in the future.
"We want the support of the regional and international partners. And we also want to invite them to invest in the new vision of Myanmar,' said Min Aung Hlaing, reported the state media The Global New Light of Myanmar.
He was speaking at the "Rebuilding Myanmar: Post-Earthquake Economic Recovery," in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.
About 3,700 people lost their lives and 5,104 others were injured in the natural disaster.
"The disastrous earthquake has had a direct impact upon 600,000 people or so with thousands of people having been forced to move out of their places,' he said.
The government has outlined three development strategies - extend humanitarian relief and social protection, infrastructure reconstruction and revive the economy.
The focus will be on five key areas for swift economic recovery - energy, agriculture, transportation, telecommunications and public infrastructure.
"We gather here today not to demonstrate our melancholy over our substantial losses but to seek ways to survive like the phoenix that could have resurrected as well as how to rebuild.
"Today's forum is not only a venue for the talk show but for laying down the foundation for achieving a roadmap,' said Min Aung Hlaing, according to the state media.
The World Bank estimated in April that the damages from the earthquake could touch RM42 billion (US$10 billion) and the costs of rebuilding may double that amount.
Twenty-one countries delivered over three million metric tonnes of relief supplies and sent about 1,000 relief workers and medical staff supported by 287 doctors following the disaster, reported the state media. - Bernama

King calls on people to bolster unity, reminds leaders to avoid divisive politics

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has reminded leaders against politicising sensitive issues, which could fuel discord within society and threaten the nation's stability. His Majesty said the existence of more political parties or factions within parties would lead to a widened rift among the people, resulting in escalating enmity among them. "Use your wisdom before making any decisions. There is no greater gift to me than a united rakyat. "I have mentioned before that there is a virus that will strike our nation. "Now, this virus has begun to spread and cannot be cured. I often speak of this so that we do not easily forget," His Majesty said. Sultan Ibrahim was speaking during the Royal Address at the Investiture Ceremony for the year 2025 in conjunction with the King's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara. Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Queen of Malaysia, was also in attendance. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Cabinet Ministers. His Majesty also called on all Malaysians to keep fostering unity as a gift to him. Sultan Ibrahim also announced a Royal Tour across the Federal Territories to witness firsthand the lives of the people and distribute tithes to the poor and eight categories of asnaf beneficiaries. – Bernama

Dubai's MBS Global eyes Johor for tech, finance investment expansion

KUALA LUMPUR: Dubai-based MBS Global Holdings, which manages over US$14 billion in assets worldwide, has expressed strong interest in positioning Johor as its next strategic investment hub in Southeast Asia. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government held a high-level meeting with MBS Global on May 29, in Kuala Lumpur, where the firm outlined its investment appetite in key sectors such as digital technology, Islamic digital banking, green innovation and real estate. "MBS Global's interest is a strong signal of Johor's rising profile among global institutional investors. We view this as a potential catalyst for high-impact investments that can generate quality jobs and spur inclusive economic growth," he said. The firm is no stranger to ambitious ventures. Its recent US$8.8 billion investment to develop a blockchain-based financial hub in the Maldives is projected to create over 16,000 jobs by 2030. Onn Hafiz said Johor's appeal has been further strengthened by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiatives, which offer cross-border advantages and regional market access to international players. "The Johor government is committed to turning investment into real benefits for the people, not just in figures, but in the form of job creation, technology transfer and sustainable economic development," he said. MBS Global Holdings' potential entry aligns with Johor's strategy to attract future-driven industries and long-term capital. It is also in line with the state's economic blueprint.

Unity not optional but a national requirement, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) has stressed that national unity is no longer an option but a key requirement to ensure continued development. He said unity is the foundation of development and a catalyst for progress. "Malaysia will only remain strong if we stand together, united. "Stability and national unity are the basic conditions for all progress. In a world that is rapidly changing and full of challenges, unity is not an option, it is a necessity," he said in his congratulatory speech in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara here on Monday (June 2). Anwar said the government, under the auspices and guidance of His Majesty, will continue to be committed to implementing a comprehensive reform agenda based on the Madani principles. "Materialistic development alone is certainly not enough. In fact, it must be balanced with human values, social justice and human kindness," said the Prime Minister. He emphasised that the development of infrastructure and public facilities should not be limited to mega projects like the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Instead, equal attention must be given to upgrading and enhancing essential services such as schools, hospitals and transport networks. "The people are not only promised hope, but also protected tangibly and continuously,' he said. The Prime Minister also emphasised that the strategy to increase the people's income would continue to be driven through economic structural reforms, the influx of high-quality investments and the strengthening of the technology and innovation ecosystem. He said every citizen should have the opportunity to progress, regardless of racial or cultural background. – Bernama
