RCB banned from IPL 2026? Bengaluru stampede at Chinnaswamy stadium sparks speculation
Eleven people lost their lives and several others were injured during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB)
IPL 2025 victory parade
in Bengaluru. The event, meant to mark the team's first-ever IPL title win, turned into a stampede due to overcrowding and poor crowd control. Eyewitness accounts and video footage indicated a lack of proper exits, emergency medical services, and coordination between organisers and authorities.
Police file FIR, arrests and resignations follow
The Bengaluru Police have filed an FIR against RCB, the event management firm DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Police arrested Nikhil Sosale, RCB's head of marketing and an employee of its parent company Diageo, on Friday.
Two KSCA officials — Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam — resigned on Saturday amid mounting political and public pressure. Several victims' families have also moved court, demanding strict action and compensation.
BCCI says it was a franchise event
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that the parade was a franchise-led programme and not organised by the board. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said it was 'an unfortunate incident'. 'At some stage BCCI will have to do something. We cannot be a silent spectator,' Saikia told Cricbuzz. 'It was a private affair of RCB, but we at the BCCI are responsible for cricket in India, and we will try to ensure such incidents do not recur in future,' he added.
The IPL is the BCCI's most valuable property, and the incident has placed the board in a difficult position. Calls for accountability are growing, but punishing a franchise could carry major commercial and legal consequences.

Ban rumours surface as investigation continues
Speculation about a potential ban on RCB for the 2026 IPL season has surfaced on social media. In IPL's history, banning a franchise is not new. There is a precedent of team ban, including the temporary suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in 2015 after spot-fixing charges.
However, the current matter involves loss of lives, and any decision to act will depend on the findings of the Karnataka government's ongoing investigation. If gross negligence is proven, BCCI may face pressure to act.
No BCCI action yet
As of now, there is no official word from BCCI on any punitive measure against RCB. The investigation continues, and the outcome will likely determine what steps, if any, are taken.

T20 Mumbai League: SoBo Mumbai Falcons ready to face NaMo Bandra Blasters in semis
Mumbai: Shreyas Iyer will be hoping to reach a second successive final when his side SoBo Mumbai Falcons takes on NaMo Bandra Blasters in the second semifinal of the T20 Mumbai League at the Wankhede Stadium here on Tuesday. A week back, Iyer had guided Punjab Kings to the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ahmedabad, where they finished runners-up to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Having already secured their spot in T20 Mumbai League semifinals, SoBo Mumbai Falcons warmed up for the knockout stage with a facile win against Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs in the last league stage match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night. The five-wicket win – set up by Ishan Mulchandani's second fifty of the season and his crucial partnership with captain Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who took over from Shreyas Iyer for Sunday night's game – was SoBo Mumbai Falcons' fourth win in five league games. Eagle Thane Strikers were the only other team to win four league games. It means that the Falcons will take on NaMo Bandra Blasters in the second semifinal on Tuesday under lights at the Wankhede Stadium. The Falcons' troupe – led by Shreyas and Raghuvanshi and ably guided by Team Principal Vikrant Yeligati – has all the bases covered heading into the business of the tournament. As he showcased during his 99-run partnership with Raghuvanshi at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, Mulchandani was in sublime touch. With 147 runs, he is the Falcons' highest run-getter of the tournament. Similarly, Siddharth Raut continued his exploits with the new ball as the seasoned pacer justified his billing as the leader of the pace pack. Add to that the fact that the allrounder duo of Vinayak Bhoir and Akash Parkar – who had a four-wicket haul against Aakash Tigers – are in top gear, underlines that the Falcons are a well-oiled machine that's raring to go at full throttle against the Blasters. Both Bhoir – the left-arm spinner and left-handed batter – and Parkar, the big-hitter and a right-arm pacer, have had at least one notable contribution both with the bat and the ball. While the seasoned duo has maintained the balance of the team, the Falcons have also unearthed the find of the tournament in Harsh Aghav. The young batter can dominate the bowlers with textbook shots. He will be hoping to withstand the big-match pressure at the Big W on Tuesday night. The winner of the first semifinal between Eagle Thane Strikers and MSC Maratha Royals – to be played on Tuesday afternoon – will be keeping a close watch on the Falcons' semifinal, just like scores of the Falcons' fan army that will be cheering the squad at the top of their voice.

Bengaluru Stampede: Congress High Command Summons Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar To Delhi
Last Updated: The Congress high command has called Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to Delhi, in connection with the Bengaluru stampede case. Days after a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 people, the Congress high command has summoned Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to Delhi. Sources with the Congress party told CNN-News18 that Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were asked to meet Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday morning. DK Shivakumar is already in the national capital for a government program, and is likely to extend his stay to meet Gandhi. The Chief Minister, meanwhile, is likely to fly to Delhi on Tuesday morning. On Sunday, Siddaramaiah had expressed grief over the stampede, saying the incident should not have happened. He also clarified that he 'didn't have any connection with the cricket stadium". Addressing reporters in Mysuru on Sunday, Siddaramaiah said, 'This incident shouldn't have happened, it happened at the Cricket stadium. I don't have any connection with the cricket stadium." Asked about the allegation that the then Bengaluru Police commissioner B Dayananda was made a scapegoat, he said, the Commissioner alone has not been suspended, five officers have been suspended, and the intelligence chief has been changed. 'My political secretary, K Govindara,j has been removed. We have taken a series of actions, not the police commissioner alone," he added. The stampede happened on June 4 in front of the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. The Opposition has been demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister over the matter.
