Mahindra plans to set up a new passenger vehicle plant, aiming for March 2028 production commencement
Mahindra plans to roll out passenger vehicles from its new production plant by March 2028, while in this fiscal, it aims to ramp up production of XUV 3XO and Thar Roxx.
Mahindra is planning to set up a new production facility dedicated to passenger vehicles. The homegrown automobile giant that posted a 13.34 per cent rise in consolidated profit in the January-March quarter of 2025 has announced plans to set up a new manufacturing plant, which will be primarily responsible for rolling out passenger vehicles. The new production facility is expected to be operational by March 2028.
While the plan of setting up a new production plant is in place, the location and other details of the facility are yet to be finalised, reported news agency PTI. While announcing the plans for the new production facility, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO for Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra, said that it will be a large, futuristic plant that will be set up. "At this point, we're thinking of it as primarily a PV plant, but we would need provision maybe for some other elements of our business to come in as we start conceptualising and seeing what kind of investment subsidies we get in different states as we plan for the future," PTI quoted Jejurikar saying. He also added that the cash flow related to the proposed facility has been provided in the capex.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 13.34 per cent rise in its consolidated profit after tax to ₹ 3,541.85 crore in the fourth quarter of the last financial year that ended on March 31, 2025. This was on the back of good performance from the auto and farm equipment sectors, claimed the OEM. M&M had delivered a consolidated net profit of ₹ 3,124.94 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, according to an exchange filing. Consolidated revenue from operations or the company stood at ₹ 42,585.67 crore in the quarter under review, as compared to ₹ 35,373.34 crore in the year-ago period. With the rapidly increasing demand and sales of SUVs, Mahindra has been witnessing additional pressure. The rising number of bookings is leading to longer waiting periods for the Mahindra SUV buyers. To cope with this, Mahindra is looking to increase production capacity for models such as the XUV 3XO and Thar Roxx by 3,000 units this fiscal, besides creating new platform capacity of 1.2 lakh units per annum in the Chakan plant.
Mahindra plans to scale up its monthly production from 61,500 units to 85,000 units by the end of FY26, taking its annual installed capacity beyond 10 lakh units. "We will add the 3XO and Roxx capacity, which is 9,000 and roughly 10,500 units, respectively. That's an incremental 3,000 units in FY26," Jejurikar reportedly said. He also announced that a new vehicle platform will be unveiled on August 15 this year and will be backed by additional capacity in Chakan. "For the new platform that we will talk about, we will be creating additional capacity in Chakan of 120,000 units per annum," Jejurikar further added.
Meanwhile, Mahindra has also revealed that it will have internal combustion engine-powered SUVs and five battery-powered electric vehicles in its portfolio by 2030.

Chenab bridge: How project team navigated through steep slopes on horses and mules
KATRA: To realise the vision of travelling from "Kashmir to Kanyakumari" by rail, the project team behind the construction of the Chenab bridge faced several challenges. Among them was how to reach the location surrounded by the steep slopes of the Himalayas. The team had only one option -- horses and mules. According to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, the top infrastructure company that constructed the bridge, one of the main and earliest challenges was access to the bridge location, to transport equipment and construction materials. "Initially, mules and horses were used by the project team to reach the location. Slowly over a period, temporary roads were created and access was made available to the site," a spokesperson from the company said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the iconic Chenab Bridge, Anji Rail Bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project and flagged off Vande Bharat trains, connecting Katra to Srinagar. The spokesperson added that eventually, on the North side of the river bank, an 11-km road was constructed and a 12-km road on the South side. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Vice Chairman, Afcons, said the Chenab Railway Bridge is more than just a marvel of engineering. "It is a symbol of India's resolve to conquer the most formidable challenges with ingenuity and courage," he told PTI. The company used the world's tallest crossbar cable cranes and specialised heavy machinery as tools for this ambitious project. "The ancient and steep slopes of the Himalayas were tamed using massive consolidation grouting, making them sturdy for the colossal arch foundations," the company said, highlighting challenges it faced. "With the foundations set, the erection of the arch from both sides was planned by the cantilever construction technique. The first big moment of triumph came on April 5, 2021, when a single majestic arch approaching steadily from both banks met at the crown," it added. "The viaduct construction was another unique challenge. There were multiple transition areas. Keeping this in mind, the launching sequence was meticulously planned in four sections," the spokesperson said. Giridhar Rajagopalan, Deputy Managing Director, Afcons, told PTI that for the first time in Indian Railways, incremental launching was done on a transition curve and a longitudinal gradient, both occurring at the same location, for the deck launching of the viaduct portion of the Chenab Bridge. S Paramasivan, Managing Director, Afcons, "For Afcons, it represents our unwavering commitment to nation-building and our ability to reimagine infrastructure in the toughest terrains. This bridge will inspire generations of engineers and stands as a tribute to the power of Indian engineering and teamwork." For the first time in the Indian Railways' history, a laboratory accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration (NABL) was set up to ensure that quality was being monitored at every stage of the project. Situated at a height of 359 metres above the river, the Chenab bridge is 35 metres higher than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab river. After inaugurating the Chenab bridge, PM Modi walked on it holding the Tricolour high. He travelled in a rail engine coach to reach the spot.

Rs 500 notes to be discontinued? PIB calls viral claim fake; YouTube video behind panic

On Tuesday, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) issued a fact check on social media, clarifying that the viral news was fake. It confirmed that Rs 500 notes continue to be legal tender and advised people not to fall for such misinformation. Citizens were also urged to verify any such claims through official sources before believing or sharing them. The clarification came after a YouTube channel named CAPITAL TV claimed that the government was planning to discontinue the Rs 500 note by 2026. The video led to confusion and panic among public. The speculation may have intensified after the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) issued a circular in April 2025, according to the economic times. The circular asked banks and White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) to increase the availability of Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes in ATMs. The Press Information Bureau has been actively working to counter misinformation related to government. In November 2019, it set up a dedicated Fact Check Unit (FCU) to address the growing spread of fake news. Citizens can report suspicious claims through WhatsApp, email, or the official web portal.

India-US trade negotiations hit top gear, American delegation extends Delhi stay
New Delhi: Intensive trade negotiations between India and the US gained momentum, with an American delegation extending its stay in New Delhi until next week as both sides work to finalise an early portion of their bilateral trade agreement, people aware of the matter said on Friday. The American negotiation team led by assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch arrived in India on Wednesday and began face-to-face bilateral talks that stretched late into Thursday, according to one person familiar with the discussions. 'The discussions are positive and progressive, and moving in the right direction,' said one person, describing Friday's conversations as 'continuing in a similar manner.' Originally expected to wrap up their visit after Friday, the American team will now remain in Delhi until Tuesday (June 10), this person added, signalling the hectic nature of the negotiations as both countries race to beat a crucial July 9 deadline. The focus is on achieving common ground for greater market access by eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers before July 9, when an additional 16% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods is set to take effect unless an interim deal is reached, people aware of the matter have previously explained. 'During the visit of the US delegation, both sides are engaged in detailed discussions on various aspects of the proposed BTA in order to forge a pathway to realise the vision for bilateral trade and economic ties as laid down by the leaders of the two countries during their meeting in February 2025,' a second person said. 'An early harvest deal—mostly related to tariff reductions on goods and elimination of non-tariff barriers—could be finalised during the ongoing New Delhi round, provided both sides reach agreement on all matters involving the early deal,' said the person quoted in the first instance. Speaking from Brescia, Italy, on Thursday, Goyal told PTI that negotiations were progressing well and more US officials would reach New Delhi on Friday to join discussions with their Indian counterparts. The negotiations are complex and taking time because of the other American tariffs on specific Indian goods such as steel, aluminium, automobiles and auto components, the first person quoted above added. 'As per the leaders' statement, the deal between the two sovereigns must be mutually beneficial, hence all trade-related issues have to be addressed accordingly,' he said. The tariff disputes have created parallel tracks in India-US relations, with New Delhi maintaining World Trade Organisation complaints against American measures while simultaneously pursuing bilateral solutions through the BTA framework.
