Three house robbers shot dead, one arrested in Sandton
The suspects are believed to be part of the syndicate that has been committing house robberies in the northern suburbs.

One other suspect was arrested.
Police said the gun battle occurred on the N1 freeway in Sandton on Thursday. The N1 North, between Winnie Mandela Drive and Rivonia Road, was closed to traffic as officers attended to the scene.
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said they received information about the suspects who had just committed a house robbery in Randburg.
Shootout
Masondo said the suspects stole several household appliances, including the homeowner's Volkswagen (VW) Polo.
'Police from Gauteng Highway Patrol, together with Gauteng Traffic Airwing and Cap Security, started looking for the suspects.
'The vehicle driven by the suspects and the one taken from the house robbery scene were spotted. As the police tried to stop them on the N1 Highway, the suspects started shooting at the police, and a shootout ensued. Three of the suspects were fatally wounded, and the fourth suspect, who was driving the car taken from the house robbery, was arrested as he tried to jump out of the car,' Masondo said.

Syndicate
Masondo said officers recovered two firearms and the appliances that were stolen during the house robbery.
'The suspects are believed to be part of the syndicate that has been committing house robberies in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
'The suspects are facing charges that include attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, house robbery and possession of suspected stolen property,' Masondo said.
CIT heist
Earlier, police foiled a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist and arrested five suspects aged between 35 and 50 in Tshwane, north of Johannesburg.
The group were handcuffed on Thursday, soon after they allegedly committed a robbery in Ekangala.
It is understood that the suspects used a BMW to ram the CIT truck.
The robbers then bombed the van and took an undisclosed amount of cash before speeding off in different cars.
Out on bail
Masondo said officers from the Gauteng Highway Patrol responded swiftly and arrested the suspects after a high-speed chase.
'Preliminary investigation revealed that these suspects are out on bail after committing cash-in-transit robberies in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces,' Masondo said.
He said police are still on the hunt for six more suspects.

The municipality was recently forced to reverse a payment of R5.7m for water projects that were not undertaken. According to a report compiled and tabled in the council by Garnet Ngubane and Partners Inc, the municipality entered into a relationship with a company called Bosch Projects in 2020. The company was tasked with the compilation of an operation and maintenance plan for wastewater treatment facilities, as well as pump stations, a borehole and water schemes which include the Mbono Bulk Water Project in Msinga. The forensic report details how Umzinyathi officials made irregular payments and failed to properly instruct lawyers to defend lawsuits by Bosch Projects and had to pay millions as a result of undefended lawsuits. The municipality paid lawyers to defend the council. The report recommended some officials be charged and others have their pensions withheld and money recouped. It also recommended R5.7m paid to the company be recovered as soon as possible. Former Umzinyathi mayor Petros Ngubane — under whose leadership the alleged corruption took place — said he was unaware of the developments as he was out of the province. Repeated attempts during the past two weeks to get comment from Mchunu, Kunene and Mkhwanazi have been unsuccessful.

2 suspects arrested in connection with murder of IFP deputy chief whip Police have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of IFP Deputy Chief Whip Khethamabala Sithole and have arrested two suspects. The Witness reports that a task team established to probe Sithole's death made the arrests this week. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo says the two suspects have been charged with two counts of attempted murder, following the incident which took place at Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong last Saturday. 'The team brought in three people for questioning. Two of them, aged 30 and 32, were linked to the incident, while the third person was released. More arrests are expected as the investigation continues. 'The suspects will be appearing [in] the Palmridge Magistrate's Court today,' Masondo says. Masondo says Sithole was killed by the suspects on Saturday evening in Katlehong, Gauteng. 'It was reported that unknown men opened fire on the group of people gathered for a meeting. Sithole was declared dead on the scene while two more people were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries.' Provincial secretary Alco Ngobese was also injured in the shooting and is receiving treatment. IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa described Sithole as 'a hard-working servant leader of the people and our country'.
