When does spring begin? Ohio flower giving stinky sign that warmer weather is almost here

Yahoo24-02-2025

The groundhogs have had their say on when spring will arrive (though Buckeye Chuck and Punxsutawney Phil disagree), now it's time for the skunks.
Skunk cabbages, that is.
According to a recent Facebook post from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, skunk cabbage — the state's first wildflower of spring — has been spotted in Southern Ohio.
So when will the warmer weather arrive? Here's what to know.

Spring will officially arrive on March 20, 2025.
That's the date of the vernal equinox, when both hemispheres of the Earth receive the same amount of daylight, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. It marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, with the days getting longer, and the start of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, with the days getting shorter.
The equinox is a little more than three weeks away.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, we're set for a mild start to spring this year.
"The U.S. spring outlook predicts warmer-than-normal temperatures for most of the country, with a few exceptions: southern and central California, Desert Southwest, southern Florida, and western Ohio Valley, where it will be near to below normal," the publication wrote.
Ohio's temperatures will start in the normal range for the first weeks of spring, but should heat up after that, per the almanac.
Skunk cabbage "is the first native wildflower to bloom in spring, often when snow and ice are still present," according to ODNR's website.
They flower first, producing enough heat to melt any surrounding snow and ice. As the flowers fade, foul-smelling leaves emerge. By late spring and summer, large colonies of skunk cabbage are conspicuous because of the stench.
Skunk cabbages grow in the soggy soil of wooded wetlands, and are found throughout Ohio. They are more frequent in Northeast Ohio and scarcest along the Ohio River.
When is Easter Sunday 2025? Here's how the date is determined each year
Daylight saving time, when we set our clocks ahead an hour to extend the amount of sunlight later into the evening, is another sure sign of spring.
In 2025, it will begin at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 9, the Cincinnati Enquirer previously reported.
While some people just want winter to be over and spring to begin, others are looking forward to the heat of summer.
Summer officially begins on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.
The June solstice occurs at 10:42 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. That's the moment in the Earth's orbit when the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (about 23.5 degrees) toward the sun, resulting in the most amount of daylight and shortest night of the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the solstice marks the start of winter, with the least amount of sunlight and the longest night of the year.

Unique Strawberry Moon set to illuminate Rochester sky Tuesday night

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — WNY residents will have a front row to one of June's most iconic night sky events: the Strawberry Moon. The full Moon will light up the sky Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Clear skies are expected for Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, so get ready for a beautiful display! This particular full Moon is going to be unique. It will be the lowest full Moon we'll see until the year 2043. In simpler terms, the path it takes across the sky – called its arc – will hug the horizon more than usual. That lower-than-normal arc brings some interesting visual effects. When the Moon is close to the horizon, it often appears a reddish/orange color. That is because its light has to travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters shorter blue wavelengths and allows the longer red and orange wavelengths to reach your eyes. Typically, this warm hue only lasts briefly; as the Moon rises higher, it shifts quickly to the bright white or pale gray color we're used to seeing. Latest Weather Forecast But this time, that color shift won't happen as fast because the Moon won't rise very high at all. Its low trajectory means it will stay near the horizon longer, keeping that reddish-orange glow well into the night. And there's another factor adding to the show: wildfire smoke. Smoke particles in the atmosphere – especially from distant fires – act like a filter, further scattering light and deepening those red and amber tones. So depending on your location and atmospheric conditions, the Moon may appear even more colorful than usual. Happy hunting! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Strawberry Moon 2025: When to see June's full moon in NY

June marks the first month of summer and with it comes a fittingly fruit-themed full moon — the Strawberry Moon. While the Strawberry Moon isn't typically red in nature, it could be this year as it's expected to be the lowest full moon in almost 20 years and could be affected by smoke from the Canadian wildfires. Here's what to know about June's full moon. The full Strawberry Moon will make its appearance on Wednesday, June 11, and will reach peak illumination at 3:44 a.m. EDT, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. June's full moon is called the Strawberry Moon as many ripening berries were ready to be harvested around this time in the northeastern United States, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The Strawberry Moon is also known as the Birth Moon, Hot Moon, Blooming Moon, and the Green Corn Moon. The strawberry moon is the most colorful of the year because it takes a low, shallow path across the sky, said Bob Bonadurer, director of the Milwaukee Public Museum's planetarium, according to reporting by USA TODAY. The June full moon's arc across the sky means moonlight must travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which can give it a colorful tint. Smoke in the atmosphere from Canadian wildfires could also act to create a colorful moon. According to EarthSky, the moon will the lowest in the sky that it's been since 2006, USA TODAY reported. "That's because we're in the midst of a major lunar standstill," which has to do with the moon's orbit around the Earth. "It's all about the inclination of the moon's orbit, which undergoes an 18.6-year cycle," noted EarthSky's John Jardine Goss. "The cycle happens because the moon's orbit is being slowly dragged around – mostly due to the pull of the sun – every 18.6 years." This year's major lunar standstill culminated in January 2025. And we're still close enough to it that the standstill is affecting the path of this June full moon, EarthSky said. Celestial events: When to see 2025's full moons, total lunar eclipse and supermoons According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, moonrise for the Rochester area will happen by roughly 8:53 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 and will set at 4:28 a.m. Wednesday. Moonrise for the White Plains area will happen by roughly 8:27 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 and will set at 4:21 a.m. Wednesday, the Old Farmer's Almanac says. While there's a chance for showers and thunderstorms for both the Rochester and White Plains areas earlier in the day Tuesday, skies should clear up by nightfall in Rochester, according to the National Weather Service. In the lower Hudson Valley, there's a slight chance of showers before 8 p.m. and skies may be a bit cloudy the rest of the night. Rain, rain and more rain: Thought May felt wetter than usual? You were right The next full moon is the Buck Moon, which occurs on July 10. Moonrise in the Rochester area is roughly 9:18 p.m. and around 8:54 p.m. in the Westchester area. A few additional celestial events are taking place this month. Here's when you should take a look at the night sky to try and catch a glimpse: While it won't be as bright as it was in early May, you'll be able to see Mars for a couple hours after dark all month long, according to NASA. The Milky Way — a faint, cloud-like band that arches southwardly across the sky — will be visible all night each night in June, NASA says, and will continue through the month of August. For the best viewing conditions of the celestial spectacle, travel away from bright city lights and find a nice, dark place to sky gaze. At the end of the month, you may be able to see Mercury for several nights if you have a clear view of the western horizon, according to NASA. Between June 21-30, look low in the sky around 30-45 minutes after sunset to try and catch a glimpse of the planet.
