Unique Strawberry Moon set to illuminate Rochester sky Tuesday night
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — WNY residents will have a front row to one of June's most iconic night sky events: the Strawberry Moon. The full Moon will light up the sky Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Clear skies are expected for Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, so get ready for a beautiful display!
This particular full Moon is going to be unique. It will be the lowest full Moon we'll see until the year 2043. In simpler terms, the path it takes across the sky – called its arc – will hug the horizon more than usual. That lower-than-normal arc brings some interesting visual effects.
When the Moon is close to the horizon, it often appears a reddish/orange color. That is because its light has to travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters shorter blue wavelengths and allows the longer red and orange wavelengths to reach your eyes. Typically, this warm hue only lasts briefly; as the Moon rises higher, it shifts quickly to the bright white or pale gray color we're used to seeing.

But this time, that color shift won't happen as fast because the Moon won't rise very high at all. Its low trajectory means it will stay near the horizon longer, keeping that reddish-orange glow well into the night.
And there's another factor adding to the show: wildfire smoke. Smoke particles in the atmosphere – especially from distant fires – act like a filter, further scattering light and deepening those red and amber tones. So depending on your location and atmospheric conditions, the Moon may appear even more colorful than usual.
