Duck feeders asked to stop over 'health hazard'
Residents have been told that feeding ducks and geese at a lake in Didcot is contributing to a "health hazard".
Didcot Town Council asked people to stop feeding the birds at Ladygrove Lake.
It said it encouraged more to come to the area, increasing droppings - and that the number of geese was becoming "unsustainable".
One parent said he did not see the number of ducks and geese as an issue, adding that people should be able to keep feeding them.
Resident Matt Booker said he took his son to feed the ducks at the lake, and was surprised by the request to stop.
"It seems a bit strange to me... Apparently there are too many ducks," he said
"I don't see it as an issue, to be honest.
"Particularly for our little son - he likes feeding them and seeing them."
Marta Rudnicka said she regularly brought the geese and ducks food, and does not intend to stop.
"I don't think they will put a policeman here, guarding the ducks," she said.
"The issue is that [the geese] don't have better places to nest.
"I don't think geese would choose to nest in a residential area if they had better places.
"It's just there is so little of the natural environment left and it's being eroded."
Tony Worgan is the deputy leader of Didcot Town Council and said people tended to feed the birds bread, which made them ill.
"Excess bread actually attracts rats and it means our water quality in the lakes is affected," he said.
"There are lots of complaints about the bird mess.
"People come home with ruined clothes, ruined trousers, kids fall over.
"The mess and the number of geese is becoming unsustainable."

Little River shooting suspect was a member of the U.S. Navy, commander confirms
CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — It's been more than a week since a gunman opened fire at a chartered party boat in Little River during Memorial Day Weekend, injuring at least 11 people. More details have been released about the 19-year-old suspect arrested states away. U.S. Navy Records confirm Shawon Shamarion Williams, who was arrested outside the Great Lakes Naval Base in Lake County, Illinois, was a member of the Navy, and had enlisted on June 6, 2023. According to public Facebook posts from his mother, Jacklyn Bellamy, Williams enlisted just days after graduating from North Myrtle Beach High School. Commander Jessica L. McNulty, spokesperson for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, released the following statement to WBTW reporters: 'We can confirm that Hull Maintenance Technician Seaman (HTSN) Shawon Williams, assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Great Lakes, was arrested by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service on May 29, 2025. NCIS transferred custody of this Sailor to local authorities.' As of Monday morning, Williams is awaiting transportation from the Lake County Jail to the Jay Reuben Long Detention Facility, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Williams's mother, Bellamy hosted the party where the shooting occurred. Her Facebook page says she is from Longs. WBTW reporters found an address listed under her name on public records, but nobody was home, and it looked like nobody had been for a long time. WBTW reporters have been attempting to contact Bellamy since Thursday, when she told reporters in regards to her son, 'He is innocent, that's all.' Southern Tier resident seeks answers in Chautauqua County cold case
CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) — Questions are being raised about the possibility of an accused murderer being responsible a cold case from 1978 that took place in Chautauqua County. There are over 20 unsolved cases in Chautauqua County involving women who have gone missing or were murdered. 'There's a lot of work to be done, a lot of files to be read,' said Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone. 'It's slower than we would like it to be, but it is important for us to give the loved ones of these victims — offer them some hope, not giving them false hope, but let them know that they're not forgotten and that we're seeking justice.' Southern Tier resident DJ Abram is making it his mission to figure out what happened in one of those cases that occurred almost 50 years ago. Abram helps run the Facebook page 'Who Killed Beth Ann Patterson Brown?' Brown was murdered in 1978 in Brocton, N.Y., after leaving a popular town bar. Abram said the community deserves answers, not only for this cold case, but for the other cases in the county. 'There's somebody walking around who's responsible for this and it's heartbreaking for the families,' he said. Police have not confirmed to WIVB News 4 if they're looking into whether accused killer Richard Fox has any connection to Brown's case. Abram said Fox did grow up in the area where Brown's murder happened. Fox is accused of murdering two Buffalo women whose bodies were found in 2021 near the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails bike path. He's also a person of interest in a case in Niagara Falls, where police discovered human remains in a basement in the Falls. 'He was around 14, 15 at the time. Being that this happened in the middle of the night, being near a bar, I can't imagine a 14, 15-year-old would be hanging around a bar,' Abram said. 'It was a very brutal murder. Is it possible? It certainly is possible, but it doesn't seem likely in my mind.' Last year, Congressman Nick Langworthy helped secure $100,000 in federal funding to help Chautauqua County crack these cold cases. 'I was honored to secure $100,000 for the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office as part of last year's appropriations process to support their Abducted, Missing, Murdered, and Unidentified Women's Initiative,' Langworthy said. 'This funding is about more than numbers — it's about justice, remembrance, and action. We owe it to the women who have vanished, to those whose lives were stolen, and to their families, to ensure their stories are not forgotten, their cases are fully investigated, and that every effort is made to deliver the answers and accountability they deserve. I salute Sheriff Quattrone for his vision in opening a cold case effort to bring just to these families and victims.'
