Alvaro Uribe: Colombia's first ex-president convicted of a crime

Time of India7 days ago
Alvaro Uribe
, president of Colombia from 2002 to 2010, was wildly popular in rightwing sectors for his war on leftist guerrillas during a particularly vicious period of the country's six-decade-old conflict.
Today, opinion polls suggest the 73-year-old remains the most trusted politician in the South American country confronting an upsurge in violence.

Born to a landowner in the western Antioquia department, Uribe was elected to Colombia's highest office at the height of the conflict between guerrillas fighting poverty and political marginalization, rightwing paramilitary groups set up to crush the leftists, and the military.

He is himself accused of having had ties to paramilitary fighters who often had the backing of agrarian elites. Uribe denies the claims, which are at the heart of his criminal conviction Monday for witness tampering.
As president, Uribe adopted a hard line against the Marxist-inspired Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which he accused of killing his father in a botched 1983 kidnapping attempt.
Live Events
With US backing for his campaign, several FARC leaders were killed on Uribe's orders and soldiers were deployed en masse in operations that gave many Colombians a sense of security, although the violence never diminished.
Uribe, a US- and British-educated lawyer who prides himself on being a workaholic who cannot sing, dance or tell jokes, counts a passion for horses among his few distractions.
He is a staunch Roman Catholic who practices yoga in the morning and prays at night.
Uribe entered politics after his father's death, serving as a senator, mayor of his hometown Medellin, and governor of Antioquia -- Colombia's most populated department.
As president, he successfully pushed a constitutional change that allowed him to be re-elected for a second consecutive term -- a reform later overturned by Colombia's highest court.
Arguing he needed continuity to see out his battle against armed insurgents and the drug trade they controlled, Uribe also tried, unsuccessfully, to secure a third presidential term.
Betrayal
Uribe earned praise from Washington for his tough anti-drug policies and strong economic growth as president.
Detractors call him an authoritarian who failed the poor.
After his presidency ended, Uribe served another term in Congress from 2014-2020 and has continued campaigning for the political right and his Democratic Center party since then.
He was instrumental in the choice of his successor: Juan Manuel Santos, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts towards a peace deal with the FARC in 2016.
For Uribe, this was the ultimate betrayal.
His vehement rejection of the agreement that saw the FARC down arms in 2017 has been gaining ground as recent peace efforts have failed under President Gustavo Petro -- Colombia's first-ever leftist president, in office since 2022.
Divisive figure
A man of short posture and deliberate speech, Uribe is a divisive figure: loved and hated in equal measure.
He is known for losing his temper, once being recorded insulting a journalist and threatening physical violence.
Even fervent detractors recognize his oratory and administrative skills.
But his legacy has been tainted by numerous corruption and espionage claims swirling around members of his entourage.
Uribe is under investigation for more than 6,000 civilian executions and forced disappearances allegedly committed by the military under his command.
He has also testified in a preliminary probe into a 1997 paramilitary massacre of subsistence farmers when he was governor of Antioquia from 1995 to 1997.
During his life, Uribe claims to have survived 15 assassination attempts, including a rocket attack by former guerrillas on the day of his first inauguration.
Uribe is married and has two grown sons who have had to answer claims that they rode on his presidential coattails to become successful entrepreneurs.
His conviction on Monday made him the first former Colombian president to be found guilty of a crime.

Security agencies say they have evidence confirming Pakistani nationality of Pahalgam attackers

In a major development in the Pahalgam terror attack probe, security agencies have gathered evidence, including official documents from Pakistan and biometric data, confirming that the three slain terrorists involved in the horrific incident were Pakistani nationals, officials said here on Monday. The three senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders, who were killed in a July 28 encounter code-named 'Operation Mahadev' on the outskirts of Srinagar, had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the April 22 attack, the officials said. The terror attack in Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow had claimed 26 lives, mainly tourists. The officials also sought to clarify that no local youths were involved in the shooting during the attack. The evidence collected by security agencies leaves no doubt about the terrorists' nationality, with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah detailing key findings in Parliament. Forensic, documentary and testimonial evidence collected during and after 'Operation Mahadev' conclusively shows that all three attackers were Pakistani nationals and hardcore terrorists of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba who had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the day of the attack, the officials said. The slain terrorists were identified as Suleman Shah alias "Faizal Jatt", an A++ category terrorist, mastermind and lead shooter; his close associate Abu Hamza alias 'Afghan', an A-grade commander and the second gunman; and Yasir alias 'Jibran', also an A-grade commander and the third gunman, the officials said. Biometric records of Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), voter identity slips and digital satellite phone data, including logs and GPS waypoints, are among the evidence gathered by the security agencies confirming the Pakistani nationality of the three terrorists, the officials said. A micro-SD chip recovered from a damaged satellite phone contained Pakistan's NADRA biometric records -- including fingerprints, facial templates, and family trees -- confirming their citizenship and addresses in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The shell casings found at the Pahalgam attack site were a 100 per cent ballistic match with the three rifles seized from the terrorists after their encounter. Pakistani-manufactured items, including wrappers for 'CandyLand' and 'ChocoMax' chocolates (brands produced in Karachi), were found in their rucksacks. The lot numbers on these wrappers were traced to a May 2024 consignment shipped to PoK. The terrorists crossed the Line of Control (LoC) through north Kashmir's Gurez sector in May 2022, when the intelligence intercepts placed their radio check-in from the Pakistani side, the officials said. On April 21, they moved into a 'dhok' (seasonal hut) at Hill Park, 2 km from Baisaran, as was stated by two detained helpers, Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, who sheltered them overnight and provided them cooked food before they trekked to Baisaran the next day to carry out the attack. The GPS waypoints recovered from Shah's Garmin device match the exact firing positions reported by eyewitnesses, the officials said, adding that they escaped towards Dachigam after carrying out the attack. On digital footprints, they said a Huawei satellite phone (IMEI 86761204-XXXXXX) used by the terrorists had been pinging Inmarsat-4 F1 every night between April 22 and July 25. Triangulation narrowed the search grid to four square kilometres inside Harwan forest. Jammu and Kashmir Police had released sketches of three people -- Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai alias "Talha", and local Adil Hussain Thoker -- on April 24. However, after the July 28 encounter, the agencies clarified that those sketches were based on a photograph found on a phone retrieved from an unrelated December 2024 shootout and the actual attackers were different. Another crucial evidence of Pakistan's involvement in the attack was the command and control links inside the neighbouring country, the officials said. They said LeT's south-Kashmir operations chief, Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Changa Manga in Lahore, was the overall handler as his voice samples from the recovered sat-phone matched his earlier intercepted calls. LeT Rawalakot chief Rizwan Anees also visited the families of the slain attackers on July 29 to organise 'Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza' (funeral prayers in absentia) and its footage is now part of the Indian dossier, they said. Statements from two arrested local helpers, Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, corroborated the terrorists' movements and confirmed they had sheltered them before the attack. The Union Home Minister, immediately after the 'Operation Mahadev', gave a statement that the intelligence trail for the terrorists began with a "human intelligence" alert leading to a meticulous tracking operation. The operation was spearheaded by the Army's elite 'Para 4' unit, working alongside the CRPF and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. To confirm the ballistic evidence, the rifles were flown to Chandigarh on a special flight, the Home Minister said, adding six forensic scientists confirmed the 100 per cent match via video call just hours later, underscoring the urgency and precision of the investigation. The Home Minister's speech also unveiled the details of 'Operation Sindoor,' a retaliatory strike carried out inside Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam attack. The investigation into the Pahalgam attack, handled by the NIA, was massive in scale, involving statements from over 1,055 people and more than 3,000 hours of interrogation.

Kerala University V-C holds talks with staff unions; Left Syndicate members slam V-C's actions

Kerala University Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal on Monday held talks with non-teaching staff unions with a view to addressing the complaints that cropped up following an altercation between some Syndicate members and representatives of university staff unions. Representatives of unions affiliated to the Congress, Communist Party of India, and Bharatiya Janata Party attended the talks, while members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-aligned staff union boycotted the meeting. Dr. Kunnummal, who urged the unions to fully cooperate in ensuring the smooth functioning of the university, attributed the dispute to the 'lack of understanding' of university regulations by certain Syndicate members. He also claimed that the Syndicate members do not hold any special administrative powers, and therefore, the employees are not obligated to follow their informal instructions unless official mandated. Meanwhile, Left-backed Syndicate members charged the Vice-Chancellor of violating university protocols and engaging in 'vindictive drama'. They also accused him for locking the Syndicate hall and leaving with the keys, thereby preventing a meeting scheduled to discuss the issue of grace marks for NCC, NSS and differently abled students on Monday. They also alleged that the Vice-Chancellor insulted Syndicate members, labelling them as uninformed and uneducated. They added Kerala University deserves a Vice-Chancellor who is academically qualified and culturally dignified. However, the charges were countered by BJP-backed Syndicate members, who claimed that the Left-aligned members were themselves responsible for the cancelled meeting on grace marks. They claimed that the meeting was scheduled at 10 a.m. It was convened under the chairmanship of the convener of the Syndicate Standing Committee on Examinations. While a few members and staff turned up for the meeting on time, the Left-backed Syndicate members, including the convener, did not take part even after three hours. Eventually, the meeting was dissolved on the direction of the Vice-Chancellor around 1 p.m. due to lack of quorum, they alleged.

Photo by P Sreedhar COIMBATORE: COIMBATORE: Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a sit-in protest in front of the Coimbatore collectorate on Monday, demanding a compensation for agricultural land acquired by the state govt for establishing Bharathiar University. Land was acquired for the purpose from 1978 to 1984. The protest was led by CPM state secretary P Shanmugam and Coimbatore district secretary C Padmanabhan. Several affected farmers participated in the protest. According to the protesters, around 916 acres of land were acquired from nearly 600 farmers at the foothills of Marudhamalai to set up the university. However, the farmers alleged that they were not paid appropriate compensation and filed a petition in court. Subsequently, the court directed the govt to pay Rs 160 crore as compensation, but the order was not implemented. In 2022, the Madras high court enhanced the compensation to Rs 400 crore, including interest. Nearly three years later, the farmers are yet to receive the payment. The day-long protest concluded in the evening after the govt assured the farmers that a high-level meeting would be convened to discuss the issue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Addressing the gathering before calling off the protest, Shanmugam said minister for public works, highways and minor ports EV Velu contacted him over the phone and conveyed that chief minister M K Stalin had discussed the matter.
