Work to cut traffic on major road given go-ahead
North Somerset and Somerset Council said the project would see work take place at nine locations along the A38 running between Barrow Street junction at Barrow Tanks, and the Edithmead roundabout.
The Department for Transport, which funds the Major Road Network (MRN), supported proposed improvements and construction.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's lead member for transport and waste services, said: "It's great to get this confirmation of funding, we have lobbied hard to secure the money to improve a busy and vital stretch of the A38 in Somerset."
Plans for a new rail station in Wellington have also been approved.
North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell said: "The A38 MRN will improve capacity on our roads, making journeys smoother, safer and more reliable.
"The scheme also includes sustainable options for getting around such as the widening of walking and cycling paths and new crossings for the Strawberry Line."
Some key areas in Somerset which are set to be updated are Edithmead roundabout, which authorities said would get a "through-about" option and the creation of a staggered junction at Cross.
For North Somerset, traffic signalling software has been proposed for Barrow Street Junction, and there are to be improvements at various points on the airport terminal roundabout.

Northern offers 50 per cent off 2025-26 child season tickets
Northern is offering a 50 per cent discount on child season tickets for the 2025-26 academic year. The discount applies to under-16s and is available until 11.59pm on Thursday, July 31. Alex Hornby, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: "As we continue in our mission to make our railway accessible and as easy to use as possible, annual education season tickets are there to offer the best value for journeys to school and college. "We're encouraging parents and guardians to take advantage of even bigger savings now, before the end of July, when the discounts available will reduce. "Locking in this earlybird discount with a season ticket not only saves a lot of money; it ticks one more thing off the back-to-school list and it means no more faffing around with day or weekly tickets, too." Tickets will be delivered in time for the new school term in September. After July 31, season tickets for those under 16, and Year 11 students, will be priced at 40 per cent off the normal child season ticket price. Term-time tickets will also become available from this date. For more information, visit
