DAP man slams delay in reopening Jln Riam Lama, cites poor workmanship and safety risks

MIRI (July 3): Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary Alan Ling has urged the Miri Public Works Department (JKR) to expedite the full reopening of Jalan Riam Lama, which has remained partially closed for several months following a landslide.
He said the incident was initially triggered by a burst underground pipeline belonging to LAKU, which subsequently damaged the culvert structure in the affected area.
'Although the culvert was finally installed after a long delay and the road was resurfaced – as confirmed by JKR on 24 June – the road is still not fully open to the public,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Describing the prolonged delay as 'extremely disappointing', Ling stressed that Jalan Riam Lama is a vital route for residents in the area and urged authorities to ensure that repair works are completed promptly and up to standards.
He also raised concerns over the absence of roadside safety barriers, pointing out that these could have been installed earlier when the erosion first occurred.
'Despite the urgency of the situation, it is unacceptable that the road has yet to be made fully operational. The delay in installing safety barriers raises further questions about the project's management,' he added.
Following a site visit on Monday, Ling lodged a complaint through the Talikhidmat platform and followed up on the current status of the works.
He said residents have expressed growing frustration over the lack of progress, especially regarding public safety and daily inconvenience.
In response, JKR informed Ling that substandard work by the appointed subcontractor had contributed to the delay.
The department has since instructed the contractor to redo the road surfacing, with remedial works expected to begin in the coming days, weather and material availability permitting.
'JKR must act immediately to ensure the road is safe for public use. The subcontractor responsible for the poor workmanship should face appropriate penalties, as their failure has directly caused the prolonged closure,' Ling said.
He added that the situation constitutes an emergency and called for stricter oversight moving forward.
'Now we have to wait again. Who will be held accountable if an accident occurs? This is no longer a natural disaster – it is human negligence. The public should not have to suffer due to substandard repair work,' he said. Alan Ling dap Jalan Riam Lama miri

Bersatu man slammed for linking new federal CID chief to ‘Malaysian Malaysia'

M Kumar took over as federal CID chief on Aug 8, replacing Shuhaily Zain. (Harian Metro pic) PETALING JAYA : A Bersatu leader has been slammed for linking the appointment of Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar to DAP's 'Malaysian Malaysia' concept. DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said Badrul Hisham Shaharin was questioning Kumar's appointment based purely on his ethnicity, which risked destroying national unity. 'This shows that Badrul (also known as Chegubard) does not appreciate the service and contributions of non-Malays in our country,' the former Paloh assemblyman said in a Facebook post. Sheikh Umar said Malaysians of various races, religions and cultures had built up the country to where it is now, attaining unity, stability and development. He added that the Federal Constitution provided all citizens with the opportunity to serve the country, while posts in the civil service – including the police force – should be filled based on merit. 'Linking such appointments to narrow-minded racial fear-mongering will only invite division and set the country back. 'We must not allow any room for this attitude displayed by Badrul to take root in our beloved country. Enough with divisive and hateful politics,' he said. Kumar officially took over as federal CID chief on Aug 8, replacing Shuhaily Zain who was transferred to lead the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. On Aug 12, Badrul posted a 'delayed' congratulatory post to Kumar on his appointment, saying 'this shows that Malaysia has started to embrace' the 'Malaysian Malaysia' concept. The Port Dickson Bersatu chief also cited the promotion of Johnny Lim as a lieutenant-general in the armed forces. The concept has been closely associated with DAP and its leaders since its founding in 1966, envisioning 'a Malaysia in which all Malaysians, regardless of race, language or religion, share equally in the opportunities of life'. Badrul offered his 'congratulations' on the wider embrace of this concept under the present government, noting that Umno had strongly opposed it in the past. He also said that if the concept continued to be accepted by the government, Malaysia could soon have its first non-Bumiputera chief justice, armed forces chief and inspector-general of police. 'Soon we may even be able to see a non-Bumiputera prime minister. What's wrong with that if the person is good for the nation's development?' he said in his post. FMT has reached out to Kumar and top cop Khalid Ismail for comment.

‘Expand free bus route for students'

Ling (second from right) riding the Bas Muafakat Johor which runs in his constituency. With him is Johor Public Transport Corporation chief executive officer Shafiei Ahamad (left). A state assemblyman is calling for the free Bas Muafakat Johor service to be extended to Parit Yaani in Batu Pahat to provide students the convenience of travelling to and from schools in the town. Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon said the bus service currently served two routes and hoped that his suggestion would be considered for implementation next year. 'The route extension will allow students from Parit Yaani to travel to and from school with ease, boosting bus ridership. 'I have made the request to Johor Public Transport Corporation,' said Ling, who is also Johor health and environment committee chairman. He said the YP-001 route, introduced in 2018, looped around Yong Peng town with stops at new villages, Yong Peng Health Clinic and Yong Peng bus terminal, recording some 400 to 500 passengers a month. The second route, YP-002, served stops such as Yong Peng District Council and Kampung Baru Kangkar Baru, and had around 1,300 to 1,400 passengers monthly, he said. 'The YP-002 route, which was added last year, sees a high student ridership especially since the school bus service at one of the new villages ceased this year following the bus driver's retirement. 'I am sure the YP-001 route will see higher ridership if extended to Parit Yaani,' Ling said, adding that the move could also help parents save on transport costs. Bas Muafakat Johor is free for all Malaysians who produce their MyKad when boarding.

Review cases under old CMA section, AG urged after landmark ruling

DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan hailed the appellate court's decision as a long-awaited victory after years of campaigning against the previous iteration of the CMA's Section 233. PETALING JAYA : The attorney-general has been urged to review all ongoing cases involving the previous iteration of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA), which criminalised the online transmission of 'offensive' comments with the intention of 'annoying' a person. The Court of Appeal earlier delivered a landmark decision, ruling that the words 'offensive' and 'annoy' in the section were unconstitutional. DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan hailed the appellate court's decision as a long-awaited victory after years of activists and human rights lawyers campaigning against the provision. He said this was because the previous section was too general, criminalising social media postings while allowing the misuse of the provision for political purposes. 'The AG must review all charges under the pre-2024 amendment to Section 233 that are still before the court to determine the best way to give meaning to the Court of Appeal's decision,' he said in a statement. The Bangi MP also said today's decision proved that the unity government was right to amend Section 233 of the CMA in December last year to overcome weaknesses in the law. The amendment, which came into effect in February, added the words 'grossly offensive' in constituting an offence. Syahredzan, a lawyer by profession, said however that the government should look into further improving the provision by removing the 'offensive' and 'annoy' element as a whole. 'This consideration should be made after obtaining feedback from the AG's Chambers,' he added.
