Frank Stronach pleads not guilty to 12 sexual assault charges, trial set for February
Billionaire businessman Frank Stronach is now set to stand trial in his Toronto sexual assault case early next year before a judge alone. Stronach's defence lawyer says he switched from a jury trial to one with a judge alone with the Crown's consent in a hearing this morning, with the trial scheduled to begin in February. Defence lawyer Leora Shemesh also confirms that her client pleaded not guilty today to the 12 charges he faces in Toronto. Stronach is also expected to face a separate trial in Newmarket, Ont., later in 2026 after the case was split into two proceedings last year. The 92-year-old tycoon, who became one of Canada's wealthiest people as the founder of auto parts giant Magna and the Stronach Group, is one of the biggest industry names in horse racing, owning and operating thoroughbred tracks including the famed Santa Anita Park in California. He was charged last year with 18 counts involving 13 complainants across Ontario. The charges include sexual assault and indecent assault, and some of them date back decades. Stronach has denied all allegations against him.

Ottawa eyeing Ukrainian partnership, EU loans for defence equipment, minister says

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick OTTAWA — Defence Minister David McGuinty says the federal government is weighing whether to follow in the footsteps of several European nations by forging a new defence co-production deal with Ukraine for military equipment. McGuinty says the idea is under 'active consideration' by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. Ukraine has become a world leader in combat drone technology over the course of its war with Russia, and countries such as the U.K. and Denmark have announced plans for co-operative equipment production projects with Kyiv. McGuinty made the comments while speaking to Canadian reporters on a call from the embassy in Riga, Latvia, capping off his trip to Europe this week. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a massive new defence spending commitment at the NATO summit in The Hague this week and said in Brussels that Canada and the European Union will negotiate a new security and defence procurement partnership. McGuinty says Canada needs to be able to leverage European loans through that partnership and that his government intends to join up with European nations on bulk purchasing — something he says will save money on defence procurement. City of Calgary announces extension of $50 rain barrel rebate program
The City of Calgary says it's expanding its rain barrel rebate program due to 'strong participation' from residents. The rebate will get those who purchase a rain barrel from Green Calgary or a local vendor $50 back, as long as it was purchased after March 31 and they submit an application form with their receipt. Originally, the rebate program was set to max out at 3,000 rain barrels, but now they're expanding it to 5,000. Green Calgary rain barrels cost $125, but that price drops to $75 with the rebate. City of Calgary spokesperson Nicole Newton says with more rain in the forecast, now is a great time to take advantage of the expanded program. 'It's never too late to add a rain barrel to your property and responsibly use what Mother Nature provides,' she said in a Thursday news release. 'You can use what you collect to water your plants, garden and trees, especially during hot and dry periods.' For more information, you can visit the City of Calgary's website.
