International baggage screening goes remote for ‘secure, streamlined travel'
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Tuesday it will begin testing a new remote screening process that will allow passengers arriving in the United States from foreign airports to go straight to another gate or terminal, without having to re-check their luggage.
Instead, CBP personnel will review checked baggage X-ray images remotely, from security images taken at international airports of origin, before the plane lands. Only those bags referred by CBP for further inspection will be pulled.
"This proactive approach enables CBP to assess potential security risks more effectively and expedites the processing of arriving flights," the agency said.
"As part of our innovation efforts in air travel, CBP is leveraging technology to enhance baggage inspections to further secure and streamline travel," added Acting Executive Assistant Commissioner Diane Sabatino of CBP's Office of Field Operations.
CBP is currently testing its International Remote Baggage Screening initiative with American Airlines' daily flight from Sydney International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. If all goes according to plan, the new process will be expanded to other routes and airlines in the future.
The new international screening process does not change current Transportation Security Administration screening requirements or how bags are checked onto flights. And while security protocols at foreign airports will also remain the same, the new CBP process is expected to reduce wait times and improve the overall travel experience for passengers who need to make connecting flights.
"The International Remote Baggage Screening initiative is a significant step forward in modernizing our processes," added Sabatino, "and providing a secure and seamless experience for international travelers."

SoftBank Group and Intel Corporation have signed a definitive securities purchase agreement, with SoftBank investing $2 billion in Intel common stock and the future of semiconductor innovation in the United States. "Semiconductors are the foundation of every industry. For more than 50 years, Intel has been a trusted leader in innovation," said Masayoshi Son, chairman and chief executive officer of SoftBank. "This strategic investment reflects our belief that advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply will further expand in the United States, with Intel playing a critical role." SoftBank will pay $23 for each share of Intel common stock, under the terms of the agreement. The investment allows Intel to continue building on its vision of advance technologies for cloud computing, digital transformation and next-generation infrastructure. "We are very pleased to deepen our relationship with SoftBank, a company that's at the forefront of so many areas of emerging technology and innovation, and shares our commitment to advancing U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership," said Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of Intel. SoftBank's private investment comes as the U.S. government considers its own rescue plan for the struggling chip maker. In an effort to revive Intel's semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, the Trump administration is considering taking a 10% stake in the company, according to The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. The investment also comes after President Donald Trump called for Tan to resign as head of the company, calling him "highly conflicted." Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., also expressed concerns about "the security and integrity of Intel's operations and its potential impact on U.S. national security." "Mr. Tan reportedly controls dozens of Chinese companies and has a stake in hundreds of Chinese advance-manufacturing and chip firms," Cotton added. Tan served as the CEO of Cadence Design Systems, a tech software company, between 2009 and 2021. In July, the company was charged by the Justice Department with conspiracy to commit export control violations. Tan said earlier this month, he has "always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards" and that his "reputation has been built on trust, on doing what I say I'll do, and doing it the right way." Trump met with Tan last week, with the president calling the meeting "very interesting." Since Tan took over in March, Intel has laid off about 15% of its staff. After shares closed lower Monday, Intel's stock jumped in after-hours trading following news of SoftBank's investment.

OpenAI launches a sub $5 ChatGPT plan in India
OpenAI today launched a new, cheaper ChatGPT paid subscription plan in India called ChatGPT GO, priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60), which is more affordable than the ₹1,999 (about $23) per month Plus Plan. The company had turned on local currency pricing for all its plans a few days ago, and with this launch, it will also allow users to pay through UPI (Unified Payment Interface), India's payment framework. Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, said that this plan will increase the message, image generation, and file uploads by 10 times over the free tier. The ChatGPT Go plan will also enable better memory retention for more personalized responses, Turely said. 'Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We're rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,' Turley said. From a currency conversion standpoint, the Plus plan was higher than $20 for Indian users when offered in local currency. The new Go plan offers a more affordable alternative to people who are looking to use ChatGPT primarily for chat, image generation, and file processing. Tibor Blaho, a software engineer with a reputation for accurately leaking upcoming AI products, had previously teased this plan and its details. While the company is geo-restricting this plan to India, the company said on its support page that it is working to expand this plan to more regions. Last month, Turley noted that ChatGPT now has more than 700 million weekly users worldwide — up from 500 million in March. OpenAI launched its updated image generator feature for ChatGPT in March, and since then, it has seen an uptick in usage in India. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a recent podcast that India is the company's second biggest market. With the Go plan, it wants to cash in on that. According to app analytics firm AppFigures, India has been the leading country in terms of ChatGPT app downloads across platforms, with over 29 million downloads coming from the country in the last 90 days.
