Thai SMEs and couriers hit as TikTok poised to monopolise e-commerce
BANGKOK: An e-commerce expert has raised concerns over TikTok's growing dominance in Thailand's e-commerce sector. He warned that the platform's practices are bordering on monopolistic and could severely impact local entrepreneurs and logistics providers. Pawoot Pongvitayapanu, a pioneer of Thai e-commerce and founder of who also serves as CEO of Pay Solutions, pointed out that US tariffs on Chinese goods may lead to a flood of low-quality Chinese products entering Thailand via e-commerce platforms. TikTok, in particular, is rapidly monopolising the market, affecting Thai SMEs and domestic delivery services such as Thailand Post. Over the past few years, TikTok has grown exponentially by attracting users through engaging short-form videos. Once the platform had amassed daily traffic, it seamlessly introduced commerce features, giving it an edge over rivals like Lazada and Shopee. The platform leveraged this user base by incorporating affiliate marketing strategies, using influencers to promote products in exchange for sales commissions. As TikTok expanded, it introduced tighter controls on sellers. Thai merchants, who rely heavily on the platform, have found themselves forced to accept increasingly strict terms. 'Many sellers are now making little to no profit after paying commissions, advertising fees, and rising platform costs,' Pawoot said. He also highlighted TikTok's preferential partnership with Global Jet Express (Thailand), operating under the J&T brand, sidelining traditional Thai couriers. It remains unclear whether this deal was made based on pricing or national affiliations, but it has certainly hurt local delivery firms. According to Pawoot, TikTok has become a major entry point for Chinese products into Thailand. To push these products, the platform offers generous commissions to Thai influencers, encouraging them to promote Chinese items over locally made goods. This leaves Thai sellers—especially those who manufacture or import independently—struggling to compete. Concerns have also arisen over the quality standards of many Chinese imports. Moreover, TikTok has begun restricting sellers' access to their own customer data—names, addresses, and phone numbers—citing concerns over customer retention and privacy laws, including Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). 'TikTok is moving towards monopolistic behaviour by gradually increasing service fees and tightening control, while the government remains largely absent in regulating this space,' Pawoot said. 'In addition to the influx of Chinese goods, the supply chain and logistics systems are increasingly favouring Chinese companies, which constitutes an abuse of market dominance and exploitative practices.' To counter this, he advised Thai entrepreneurs not to rely solely on one platform. Instead, they should diversify their sales channels—setting up their own websites, chat systems or sales pages to attract new customers and retain existing ones. He added that the lack of strong legal safeguards for cross-border sales could reduce Thailand to a mere transit hub, where profits are siphoned overseas. In comparison, Indonesia and Malaysia have stronger regulatory frameworks to protect local markets. Pawoot criticised the fragmented approach among Thai government agencies. There's no lead agency managing this issue. Responsibilities are scattered and uncoordinated, he said. He called for collaboration between key public agencies—such as the Department of Internal Trade under the Commerce Ministry, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), and the Trade Competition Commission of Thailand—with private sector input to develop effective oversight. Futures for equity indices in Japan, Australia and Hong Kong all pointed to early losses, with Tokyo contracts down more than 2%, indicating that Friday's risk-off sentiment is spilling into Asian markets. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 ended Friday 1.6% lower, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 dropped 2%, marking the steepest single-day decline in months for both benchmarks. US index futures were little changed in early Asian trading. Oil prices retreated 0.6% after OPEC+ confirmed another significant production increase in September, completing the unwinding of earlier supply cuts. Meanwhile, the US dollar traded mixed against its Group-of-10 peers following a 0.9% slide on Friday, as Treasury yields plunged. The US labour market slowed markedly over the past three months, with May and June payroll figures revised down by almost 260,000 jobs. July data showed an average monthly gain of just 35,000 jobs, the weakest pace since the pandemic. The 10-year US Treasury yield dropped 16 basis points on Friday, while two-year yields fell 28 basis points, reflecting heightened expectations that the Fed will ease policy at its September meeting. Some analysts even anticipate a 50-basis point cut, double the usual move. 'September is a lock for a rate cut and it might even be a 50-basis point move to make up the lost time,' said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. Elsewhere in Asia, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra faces a Constitutional Court deadline today to submit a defence in an ethics case. In the UK, the Bank of England is expected to deliver a rate cut later on Monday. In Brazil, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signalled willingness to engage in trade talks with Donald Trump, provided Brazil is treated as an equal. Meanwhile, Trump's recent comments on India and a proposed 25% tariff rate have rattled markets, with the US president also warning of additional 40% tariffs on goods deemed to be 'transshipped' through other countries. Gold held steady after rising on Friday, as Trump announced the deployment of two US nuclear submarines in response to remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The US president further inflamed tensions by calling for the dismissal of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer following the jobs report, and demanded the Federal Reserve Board assume control of monetary policy if Chair Jerome Powell fails to cut rates. He said Malaysia, as a friendly nation, is proud to play a role in resolving the conflict between the two neighbouring countries, helping to ensure regional peace and stability. 'When Cambodia and Thailand were in conflict, Malaysia successfully negotiated peace terms. 'Both sides placed their trust in us and agreed to hold talks in Kuala Lumpur,' he said. Anwar added that Cambodian Defence Minister Gen Tea Seiha and Thai acting Defence Minister Gen Natthaphon Narkphanit are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur today to engage in detailed discussions aimed at further easing tensions. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar, in Malaysia's capacity as current Asean Chair. The meeting also saw both parties agreeing to hold a General Border Committee meeting as part of the ceasefire implementation. On another matter, Anwar said Malaysia is not surrendering anything by choosing to engage in amicable discussions with Indonesia to resolve the Sulawesi Sea maritime dispute. He stressed that such an approach reflects Malaysia's desire to maintain friendly ties with Indonesia. 'Indonesia is a friendly nation, and President Prabowo Subianto is a personal family friend,' Anwar said, adding that discussions must be held in accordance with the law. He emphasised the importance of involving Sabah and Sarawak in any deliberations, stating that any decision must first obtain the approval of the respective state governments and legislative assemblies. 'This is our country. We fight and spend hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, just to protect Sabah's rights,' he said, referring to the defunct Sulu sultanate's claims over the state. On the potential undersea project collaboration between PETRONAS and Indonesian oil and gas corporation Pertamina, Anwar clarified that it has yet to be finalised. He noted that both countries must continue discussions on working terms, especially in areas involving land and sea resource development that require clear coordination. As an example, he pointed out that while oil extracted from land belongs to Sabah, underwater resources may fall within Indonesian maritime boundaries, among other states and nations. 'This is what we are working on together, and it all depends on ongoing negotiations,' he said. Anwar and Prabowo recently issued a joint statement pledging to explore a proposed joint development in the Sulawesi Sea, including the Ambalat block, in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. The Ambalat block, located off the coast of Sabah and spanning some 15,000 sq km, is believed to contain substantial crude oil reserves. Separately, Anwar said national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is able to purchase new aircraft due to healthy financial performance and sound management. The Prime Minister said the decision to acquire 30 Boeing aircraft also reflected Malaysia's effective trade diplomacy with the United States. 'For the first time last year, MAS recorded a profit because we did not 'sakau' (steal),' he quipped. He credited the economic recovery to political stability and strategic ties with countries such as the United States. Anwar noted that many agreements have been reached for Malaysia's economic benefit, including the aircraft deal, which he said was finalised about four or five months ago.
