Excessive speeding bill gives mandatory jail time, possible forfeiture of vehicle for repeat offenders
Police say they've heard every excuse in the book when they stop people for speeding.
Former Rep. Gene Ward passes away at 82
'I've heard everything from, I really had to use the bathroom to I was late, I know some of the interesting ones where I just tuned my car and I was trying it out,' said Maj. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Deptartment Traffic Division. 'You know, they come up with some interesting ones, but ultimately there is no excuse.'
Last weekend, Honolulu police arrested several drivers going over 100 miles per hour. The fastest was 152.
'So as a community, we got to come together and try to figure out how to stop this,' Slayter said.

They might be getting some help soon. A bill is moving through the legislature that would make mandatory jail time and possible forfeiture of the vehicle if caught for excessive speeding three times in five years.
'And hopefully, that sends a message to these folks who are violating the law, that, hey, this is not acceptable, this is unsafe and this is very dangerous,' said Sen. Brandon Elefante, the Public Safety Committee chair.
Excessive speeding is anything 30 miles over the posted speed limit or going faster than 80 miles per hour anywhere.'I think we constantly are feeling it throughout Oahu specifically, that one person's actions has consequences upon everyone,' said Rep. Darius Kila, the Transportation Committee chair. 'You look at the incident that occurred in Nanakuli just a couple days ago that one vehicular traffic accident, you stalled Farrington Highway for four hours.'
The bill originally called for the third excessive speeding offense to be a Class C felony, which has been kept a misdemeanor for now.
Honolulu Police say they've actually doubled the amount of solo bike officers on their nighttime enforcement patrols to help catch excessive speeders. They say they will continue to do so to help stop this problem.
Police say last weekend's arrests came thanks to a tip from the public. They ask if you see anyone racing, call 911.
'Getting a citation, getting arrested, that might be the best thing that could have happened to you for that night,' Slayter said. 'Because the alternative, you could get seriously injured. You could die. You could kill somebody else and spend the rest of your life in jail.'

Abandoned puppy found in Mass. euthanized, police investigate as animal cruelty
Police have been investigating an animal cruelty case in which two puppies were found abandoned in Randolph earlier this month, according to police. One of the puppies was in such bad condition that veterinarians decided to euthanize it. On the evening of Aug. 1, a passerby found two puppies abandoned along a walkway between the Martin E. Young Elementary School on Lou Courtney Drive and Barbara Road, Randolph police said in a press release. The passerby quickly notified police, and the puppies — a male and female around 11 weeks old — were immediately taken to VCA Weymouth. 'Unfortunately, shortly after arrival, it was determined that due to the extent of the condition of the male puppy, the most compassionate recourse was to provide him with a peaceful passing,' police wrote. Randolph police are now asking the public to help them identify 'the individual(s) responsible for dumping these helpless dogs,' the police department wrote. Investigators believe the suspects are likely basement breeders who live in Randolph or a neighboring community. The puppies are of mixed breed — possibly some sort of shepherd or hound mix — and have 'a distinct black tail,' police said. The female puppy is not currently up for adoption. Randolph police are asking anyone who thinks they may have seen suspicious activity in the area on or around Aug. 1 or who knows of home breeders in the area that breed similar dogs to contact them. Those with information about the case are asked to call Detective Kevin Aldred at 781-963-1212, police said. Alternatively, you can submit an anonymous tip by texting 'Randolph' to 847411 or by downloading the Randolph Police Department application onto your Apple or Android phone. No further information about the case has been released. Truth Social's AI search is powered by Perplexity, but the platform can set limits on sources
AI startup Perplexity is powering a new AI-powered search engine on Truth Social, President Donald Trump's social media platform. The search engine, dubbed Truth Search AI, is already available on the web version of Truth Social, with public Beta testing on its iOS and Android apps planned for 'the near future.' Trump Media said in a press release that Perplexity's tech provides 'direct, contextually accurate answers with transparent citations' which will help Truth Social 'exponentially increase the amount of information available' to users. Nonetheless, the social media platform maintains control over which sources of information the AI search engine draws from. Truth Social is using the Perplexity Sonar API, which promises to query the web to retrieve current and verified information – even if that information is scraped from websites that block Perplexity's crawlers – and supports structured output so users can define the format in which they'd like to see the search engine's responses. Jesse Dwyer, a Perplexity spokesperson, told TechCrunch that the Sonar API will be accurate to whatever sources Truth Social limits it to. 'We have no visibility or control over that,' Dwyer said. 'Similar to you using the API inside of your own company or if you were an academic researcher and wanted to use it to search your own data.' TechCrunch has reached out to Trump Media to learn more about whether Truth Search AI will have access to the entire web, whether it will prioritize certain sources over others, and whether the AI will be directed to respond favorably about the president and current administration and unfavorably towards Democrats. To assess which sources the searchbot would cite, Axios asked it a bunch of questions — like 'What happened on January 6, 2021? and 'Why was Donald Trump impeached?' In all the responses, was either the most common or the only listed source of information. Others included The Washington Times or Epoch Times, per Axios. In contrast, Perplexity's public search engine returns a wider variety of sources, including Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, NPR, and Politico. Truth Social plans to refine and expand the search function 'based on user feedback as we implement a wide range of additional enhancements to the platform,' said Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media and a former California congressman, in the statement. Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity's chief business officer, also noted in the statement that Perplexity's AI delivers answers with 'transparent citations that allow anyone to dig deeper.' In late July, alongside his AI Action Plan, Trump published an executive order targeting 'biased AI,' or models that aren't 'ideologically neutral.' The order specifically referred to information about race or sex, unconscious bias, systemic racism and other ideas thrown into the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) bucket as 'pervasive and destructive' ideology that can 'distort the quality and accuracy of the output.' Truth Search AI comes in the same week that top AI firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were added to a list of approved vendors that can sell their services to civilian federal agencies. OpenAI on Wednesday reached a deal with the U.S. government's central purchasing arm to sell ChatGPT Enterprise to agencies for just $1 per year. Sign in to access your portfolio
