Excessive speeding bill gives mandatory jail time, possible forfeiture of vehicle for repeat offenders
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Our roads are not a racetrack. That's the message from Honolulu police as they say they're catching more drivers going well above the speed limit. Lawmakers are pushing a bill that'll try to help the problem.
Police say they've heard every excuse in the book when they stop people for speeding.

'I've heard everything from, I really had to use the bathroom to I was late, I know some of the interesting ones where I just tuned my car and I was trying it out,' said Maj. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Deptartment Traffic Division. 'You know, they come up with some interesting ones, but ultimately there is no excuse.'
Last weekend, Honolulu police arrested several drivers going over 100 miles per hour. The fastest was 152.
'So as a community, we got to come together and try to figure out how to stop this,' Slayter said.

They might be getting some help soon. A bill is moving through the legislature that would make mandatory jail time and possible forfeiture of the vehicle if caught for excessive speeding three times in five years.
'And hopefully, that sends a message to these folks who are violating the law, that, hey, this is not acceptable, this is unsafe and this is very dangerous,' said Sen. Brandon Elefante, the Public Safety Committee chair.
Excessive speeding is anything 30 miles over the posted speed limit or going faster than 80 miles per hour anywhere.'I think we constantly are feeling it throughout Oahu specifically, that one person's actions has consequences upon everyone,' said Rep. Darius Kila, the Transportation Committee chair. 'You look at the incident that occurred in Nanakuli just a couple days ago that one vehicular traffic accident, you stalled Farrington Highway for four hours.'
The bill originally called for the third excessive speeding offense to be a Class C felony, which has been kept a misdemeanor for now.
Honolulu Police say they've actually doubled the amount of solo bike officers on their nighttime enforcement patrols to help catch excessive speeders. They say they will continue to do so to help stop this problem.
Police say last weekend's arrests came thanks to a tip from the public. They ask if you see anyone racing, call 911.
'Getting a citation, getting arrested, that might be the best thing that could have happened to you for that night,' Slayter said. 'Because the alternative, you could get seriously injured. You could die. You could kill somebody else and spend the rest of your life in jail.'

Leadership in limbo among Hawaiʻi police departments
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Three of Hawaiʻi's four county police departments may soon lack permanent chiefs, which is raising concerns about leadership stability. HPD Chief Joe Logan announces retirement Honolulu's mayor has someone in mind for HPD but the process has yet to play out. Honolulu, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi County all face vacancies for permanent police chiefs. Honolulu's Joe Logan announced on Monday that he will retire at the end of June,Kauai's Todd Raybuck will step aside on June 12 and the Big Island will also need a new permanent leader if Hawaiʻi's Ben Moszkowicz becomes Honolulu's interim chief. 'All of the commissions, when they're looking for a chief, that they not only take input from the community, but they take input from the rank and file officers on the beat, that are answering, the 911 calls for service,' said SHOPO president Robert Cavaco. Mayor Blangiardi recommended Moszkowicz for Honolulu's interim role and hopes the commission moves faster than last time. Honolulu councilmember develops plan to address HPD officer shortage 'After Chief Ballard retired, you know, it took police commission in Honolulu over a year to select Chief Logan,' Cavaco said. A Honolulu Police Commission member said the quick suggestion from Blangiardi was surprising and added that filling interim and permanent replacement positions will not be his call. He's made it. But does that give Chief Moszkowitz, a leg up over other candidates, per se? I don't think so.' Grandview carpenter's tools, trailer stolen outside his home
GRANDVIEW, Mo. — A man's livelihood turned upside down after he said a thief stole his enclosed trailer and thousands of dollars' worth of equipment inside. Kyle Hudson said a thief stole his Milwaukee tools and trailer, totaling to about $10,000. Lee's Summit police officer injured in shooting released from hospital He said it happened right outside their home on May 20, just after 4 p.m. 'I'm thinking it really can't be real, but it really is real,' Hudson said. Hudson got home to find his enclosed trailer — gone, along with tools he uses for work. 'And there it goes,' Hudson said watching his home surveillance footage. Caught on camera, you can see the wheels of the vehicle, but not the thief's face. Hudson's is a carpenter he stored all his saws, nail guns, ladders and materials for upcoming projects in the trailer. 'Fortunately, it was material I had purchased,' Hudson said. 'That breaks my heart for him,' Girlfriend Ashley Pavone said, 'because I know that's so much money.' While Pavone admits the trailer wasn't registered, Hudson said it was worth about $4,000. Plus, it's been customized. 'The front has aluminum tread plate about 2′ high back to the end of the radius on the nose. FOX4 asked Master Patrol Officer Brandon Eitel the best way protect your property so something like this doesn't happen to you. 'For trailers, they make hitch locks,' Eitel said. 'They make locks for the outside of the trailer itself and then they also make wheel locks that they put on for things like parking tickets or traffic violations.' Hudson trailer was parked on the street outside their home, near skyline and Grandview. Pavone said it only took minutes for a man in a dark colored truck to pull up and drive off with Hudson's livelihood hitched to the back. 'The craziest part of it, I think is, if a guy came up to him and asked him for a job, he probably would've given him a job,' Pavone said. 'Instead, he took his livelihood away.' Hudson said without his tools, he's been forced to decline projects. 'A couple projects are getting me thru to the next project,' Hudson said. 'Even the smallest projects are hard to do without a toolbelt or ladder.' Pavone posted on social media and printed flyers, searching for different camera angles of the theft. Pavone said they're offering a reward for any information leading to an arrest and the return of the tools and trailer. Hudson filed a police report. Grandview police said they'll look into it.
