GMA Network2 days ago
Petron Corp. on Tuesday reported a decline in first-half net income, as the Ang-led fuel retailer reported a double-digit decline in its revenues during the period on the back of lower international oil prices and decreased volumes from trading operations in Singapore.
Petron reported a P5.3-billion net income in the first half of the year, down from P6.023 billion in the comparable period of 2024.
Overall sales declined by 13% to P386.4 billion, as the consolidated sales volume was dragged by transactions in Singapore to 64.2 million barrels. The combined sales volume from the Philippines and Malaysia climbed 3% to 56.2 million barrels.
'Our results continue to reflect our resilience in overcoming market challenges, while highlighting the strength of the Petron brand across different customers and industries,' Petron Corp. president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang said in an emailed statement.
'We remain confident in our ability to drive growth as we further enhance our operations towards greater efficiency and sustainability,' he added.
The company raised P32 billion from its latest fixed-rate bond offering, with its P25-billion base offer 1.3 times oversubscribed leading to a P7-billion oversubscription. Proceeds will be used for the redemption of its Series D and E bonds, and funding for general corporate purposes.
Shares in Petron closed Tuesday at P2.48 apiece, unchanged from Monday's finish. –VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos confident US will defend PH territory

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed his confidence that the United States will defend the Philippines should it face security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea. Speaking to Indian news media 'Firstpost,' Marcos was asked if he is convinced that the US would come to the Philippines' defense should it face a security challenge in the region. 'I am, because the assurance is that we have been receiving in those terms from the new [US] administration before I went there, and when I went there,' Marcos replied in reference to his recent official visit to Washington, D.C. last July where he met US President Donald Trump and senior defense officials. Marcos also cited the Trump administration's 'ironclad commitment' to the Philippines amid the 'dangerous' Chinese actions in the South China Sea. 'I believe that remains constant, and I'm not surprised because we really have had a very, very long history together with the US,' the President said. 'It has been a very long and very good relationship, and I think it will remain so. I'm sure it will remain so,' he added. In July, Manila reiterated its call for China to comply with the nine-year-old arbitration ruling that nullified Beijing's claims in the South China Sea. Marcos is currently in India on a five-day state visit. Meanwhile, Marcos said the world will have to readjust to the new US tariff rates. 'That's where it stands right now, and it is just something that we will have to adjust to and the effects on our economies are all about the same,' he surmised. 'The entire world economy is going to have to readjust itself. He reinvents himself in many ways,' he added. According to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the new US tariff rates are unlikely to change. Trump had announced a new 19% tariff rate for goods from the Philippines after he and Marcos had a meeting during the Philippine President's US visit. When asked for advice how to negotiate with the US, Marcos answered, 'Just do your best' and be 'smart about it.' 'We now need to be agile, our economies need to be agile. We need to be able to adjust very quickly,' the President said. 'That's how we are structuring our economy: strong, robust, but agile, and it seems to be the most important quality right now,' he added. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos expects reduction in subsidy for P20/kilo of rice

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. is expecting a reduction as to the subsidies for the government's P20 per kilo of rice initiative. 'Habang 'yung production natin gumaganda, bababa nang bababa 'yan (subsidy),' Marcos said during an interview with GMA Integrated News. 'Naabot na natin 'yung punto na masabi natin, 'O kaya na natin ito. We can afford it. We can afford the subsidy,' the President added. (We have reached the point that we can say that we can do it. We can afford the subsidy.) Marcos ensured that the coverage of the Benteng Bigas program would expand to ensure that more sectors of the population can access the staple food at a cheaper cost. Initially launched in the Visayas last April, at least 162 locations across the country have since been offering the cheaper subsidized rice, according to the Department of Agriculture. Members of the vulnerable sectors are on the priority list of who can avail the P20 per kilo of rice. The P20-per-kilo rice initiative operates primarily through KADIWA ng Pangulo outlets. The rice is being sourced from stocks of the National Food Authority (NFA), which are procured directly from local farmers. --- RF, GMA Integrated News
