Arensman climbs to Tour de France stage win as Pogacar extends lead
The Belgian Soudal Quick-Step rider appeared exhausted after Friday's uphill time trial.
Arensman attacked on the third of four mountains on a colossal climb day while Slovenian Pogacar outsprinted Jonas Vingegaard for second just over a minute behind the winner.
Crossing the line in the mist at 1840m altitude, Arensman flung himself to the ground exhausted after taking a first win on this Tour for British team Ineos.
The 25-year-old produced a virtuoso climb amidst suffocating packs of near hysterical fans who had waited all day for the peloton to pass.
Behind him Pogacar fought off a string of attacks from his arch rival Vingegaard on a day the Slovenian never looked like attacking for the win.
Winner of the past two stages Pogacar pounced for the line from 50 metres with his trademark kick gaining another six seconds on the Dane.
Pogacar, overall race winner in 2020, 2021 and 2024, now leads Vingegaard by 4min 13sec with Florian Lipowitz moving into third place at 7min 53sec.
German Lipovitz of Red Bull rode on Pogacar's wheel until Dane Vingegaard, who won back-to-back Tour titles in 2022 and 2023, had attacked late on.
After three days in the Pyrenees the riders next have a hilly stage 15 over 169.3km from Muret to the medieval fortified town of Carcassonne.

Del Castillo and Spain 'full of hope' ahead of Germany Euro 2025 semi

"I have to just focus on the things that I can influence. "We are full of hope, we are so excited. We dream of being European champions but to do that we need to win on Wednesday so all our energy is going into that game," Del Castillo said. But Del Castillo, while not yet a guaranteed starter, has become a more important player than during that tournament in Australia and New Zealand. Then, under previous coach Jorge Vilda, she started the team's first match before gradually disappearing from circulation. She then featured in the side that participated in the 2024 Olympics and lost to Germany in the bronze medal match -- a defeat they will seek to avenge on Wednesday. Infectious "We have been through so much together and that has helped us mature as a team," she said on the margins of a training session by Lake Geneva. "I still see myself as one of the youngsters even though there are players much younger than me like Vicky (Lopez) and Maite (Zubieta), and then there are older players like Irene and Alexia who have been around longer and been to so many more tournaments. "We have that mix of youth and experience, of joy but also maturity." Del Castillo is known for her glowing smile and infectious personality, and she has no intention of changing even as she becomes more and more recognisable thanks to her exploits with Spain and Real. Olympic champion Marchand to focus on medleys at worlds
Marchand was one of the standout stars of the Paris Games when he claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly as well the 200m and 400m individual medleys. However, he is now set to concentrate purely on the medley events. "He won't be doing the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke," Michel Coloma of the Dauphins du TOEC club told AFP. "He wants to see what happens in the 200m medley, without having any other races on his plate." Marchand is already the world record holder for the 400m medley, having snatched it from American legend Michael Phelps in 2023, but he now wants a crack at Ryan Lochte's 2011 record of 1min 54.00sec for the 200m medley. He came close in his Olympic final, which he won in 1min 54.06sec, setting an Olympic record in the process. Marchand will begin his world championships on July 30 with the heats of the 200m medley, with the final the next day.
