SABC launches radio campaign to end GBV
The broadcaster said on Saturday the campaign would run on the SABC ' s 19 radio stations with the aim of creating awareness about the damage caused by GBV.
This would be done through programmes geared towards educating the youth, caregivers and communities at large.
The message is: 'If you see it, speak out. If you're hurting, reach out. Because doing nothing is not an option. GBV. It ends with you. Call 0800-428-428 to report abuse or get help.'
TWYST founder Ntombozuko Jafta, from KwaNobuhle, welcomed the SABC's initiative, saying it came at a time when she had started to feel defeated by the scourge of violence against women.
In June, a 12-year-old-girl was killed in Motherwell and two girls were found burnt in KwaNobuhle just days apart.
'GBV is getting worse,' Jafta said.
'Two sisters were gunned down while they were sleeping in Kariega, and while we were looking at a report about that a police officer shot his ex-girlfriend and their friend before killing himself in Central.
'There are also cases which are not reported.
'While we are protesting, you find people telling you that the neighbour raped their younger sister and threatened to kill them if they told anyone.
'There are cases of children with disabilities who cannot talk.
'Unlike our small protests in Motherwell, Kariega or Despatch, our voices will now be on the airwaves and this will have a huge impact on the people on the ground.'
The Herald Nelson Mandela University Citizens of the Year Awards 2022 winner in the gender-based violence category said men needed to be in the forefront in the fight against GBV.
SABC group executive for radio Nada Wotshela said: 'As the country grapples with GBV, which has become a national emergency affecting women, children, men and members of the LGBTQ+ community, the public broadcaster felt it was important to lend its voice and platforms in further fighting this deadly societal disease through our platforms.
'We will be amplifying various stakeholders ' efforts through specially curated daily content on this matter.'
According to Sicebise Social Inclusion programme manager Mbulelo Xinana, the SABC's campaign forms part of the national strategic plan on GBV.
Sicebise Social Inclusion hosts the annual Gqeberha Pride Festival, which serves as an awareness campaign against GBV, especially on issues of violence against the LGBTQ+ community.
'The best way to fight GBV is to raise awareness which is how you make a change by interacting with stakeholders to make a difference,' Xinana said.
'When we talk about GBV we must acknowledge that violence against the LGBTQ+ community is GBV.
'One of the things not talked about much is the intimate partner violence, because being in the LGBTQ+ community is already taboo.
'How do you even report such an issue not knowing how it would be handled?
'Those are [some of the] issues that we are looking into as an organisation.'

Attempted murder charge for Joburg mom who gave 'drugs' to young son
A mother from Newclare who was seen on video getting her young son to light a 'drug pipe' and smoke it with her, appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Thursday. The video went viral on Tuesday and sparked outrage, leading to her arrest later that night by the Joburg Metro Police Department. She was in the dock with three men alleged to have been in the room with her during the incident. Two were arrested on the same night as her and the other suspect was apprehended on Wednesday. They are charged with attempted murder and child abuse for exposing the child to a harmful substance. They intend to apply for Legal Aid lawyers to defend them. The case was to postponed to August 4. The child is four years old, the court heard. Initially, he was believed to be aged three. The child was taken to a place of safety after being medically assessed in hospital. 'The video depicted the child lighting drugs in a bottle neck for his mother, who then encouraged him to smoke, all in the presence of other adults,' the JMPD said earlier this week. After receiving a tip-off on her whereabouts, the JMPD said its o fficers located the mother, who matched the description from the video. 'When questioned, she identified two other individuals present in the video, including the person who recorded it. All three suspects confessed to using Mandrax and admitted to filming the incident. Their cellphones were confiscated as evidence.' Police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said on Wednesday members of the Johannesburg family violence and child abuse unit (FCS) were investigating the case. 'The FCS in Gauteng has 22 units strategically located in the province servicing 146 police stations. There are at least 66 detectives on standby from FCS after hours to attend to cases related to their mandate,' she said. TimesLIVE

Search still on for kidnapped Pretoria businessman Jerry Boshoga: police
Police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that kidnapped businessman Jerry Boshoga has been found dead. Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed on Thursday the investigation into his kidnapping was still at a sensitive stage and that the businessman had not yet been found. 'We call on all social media users to stop the spread of unverified information. Social media users are also urged to spare a thought for the family of the victim. The spreading of such misleading information has caused unnecessary trauma, panic and anxiety for close family members including his mother, wife and children,' she said. Mathe said police were in close contact with the family and if there were any developments in the case, the family would be the first to be notified by the investigating team. Boshoga, from Silver Lakes, Pretoria, was kidnapped in Centurion in November last year and his kidnappers demanded a R10m ransom, sending videos to the family purporting to show him being tortured. TimesLIVE Premium reported that Boshoga was last seen in November 2024 after he said he had to meet someone in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion. His brother struggled to get hold of him and while trying to trace his location, his wife received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number with a voice note from Boshoga saying: 'I've been kidnapped.'
