Kajol opens up on her 24-year marriage with Ajay Devgn: ‘We would have divorced long ago if..'
It seems that opposites don't just attract but might just be the secret ingredient of
stable marriages
. In a candid chat with
Mashable India
, actress Kajol divulged the secret of her more than two-decade-long marriage wit 'Shaitaan' actor Ajay Devgn, saying that rather than hurdles, it's their differences that have helped them navigate marriage and be happy with each other.
Instead of creating friction, their contrasting personalities have built a stable foundation, allowing them to understand and balance each other, she explained.
Kajol reflected on how deeply different they are as individuals. According to her, if they were more similar, their journey together might not have lasted this long. Their ability to accept each other's opposing traits has prevented conflict from escalating and helped them evolve together. Ajay, who is famously reserved and introverted, has been a calming counterpart to Kajol's animated and vibrant personality. The couple has been married for 26 years, a milestone rarely seen in the entertainment world.
'Ajay and I are completely different otherwise hum logo ko itne saal nahi lagte (it wouldn't have taken us so long), we would have separated long before," she told
Mashable.
Explaining how they make their dynamic work, Kajol humorously shared that the true key to a long-lasting marriage is mastering the art of tuning out. She believes it's crucial to overlook certain things about your partner—whether it's forgetting minor mistakes or choosing not to dwell on something said in the heat of the moment. Selective memory and a touch of emotional deafness, as she described it, become practical tools in keeping the relationship peaceful and happy. Letting go of the little things allows for a more harmonious bond, even when life gets chaotic.
'I say this quite often: the secret to a happy marriage is partial deafness and selective amnesia. You really need to forget certain things about your partner and sometimes unhear things they said. It is very important," she said.
Interestingly, Kajol emphasized that their marriage doesn't rely on conventional romantic gestures like regular date nights. In fact, they hardly ever carve out time for elaborate couple outings. With both of them having hectic careers that demand frequent travel and long shooting schedules, they prefer to spend whatever free time they get at home, surrounded by their family. Quality time, for them, comes in the form of shared moments with their children and loved ones rather than elaborate couple activities. This grounded approach to love and companionship has played a big role in keeping their bond solid.
The two got married in 1999 and are parents to two children—Nysa, their daughter, and Yug, their son. Despite their busy lives, they have remained committed to their roles as parents and partners.
On the professional front, Kajol is currently working on an exciting new film titled Maa, a mythological horror story rooted in the Shaitaan universe. The plot centers around a mother battling mystical threats in a desperate attempt to protect her daughter. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on June 27, promising fans a thrilling cinematic experience.
