Umrao Jaan returns to big screen, Rekha's classic to compete with Kajol's Maa in box office face-off
Theatres will see a rare box office face-off between two women-led films on June 27 as Rekha's Umrao Jaan returns in a 4K restored version, clashing with Kajol's upcoming horror drama Maa. While one is a celebrated classic, the other is a new entry in the expanding Shaitaan universe. Both aim to attract very different cinema audiences. Classic restored Umrao Jaan, originally released in 1981 and directed by Muzaffar Ali, has been digitally restored in 4K. The restoration was led by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). PVR Inox will re-release the film under its Timeless Classics banner. Limited vs wide release While Umrao Jaan will return to theatres with limited shows, Kajol's Maa is expected to get a wider release across more screens. Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat Pathak, is marketed as part of the Shaitaan universe, giving it a potential advantage at the box office. Two films, one day Despite the contrast in genre—period drama versus mythological horror—both films highlight strong women-led narratives. Umrao Jaan explores the life of a courtesan-poetess in 19th-century Lucknow, while Maa offers a horror-driven storyline rooted in mythology. Cultural legacy Rekha's performance in Umrao Jaan earned her a National Award for Best Actress. The film also features Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, and others. Known for its iconic soundtrack by Khayyam, the film's songs like Dil Cheez Kya Hai and In Aankhon Ki Masti continue to trend on social media even today. Social media buzz The re-release may find new traction among younger audiences discovering the film for the first time. With Umrao Jaan already popular on Instagram for its music clips, the big-screen comeback could revive its digital appeal alongside its box office run.

Pinkvilla Predicts: The opening day collection of Housefull 5, Sitaare Zameen Par, Maa, Metro In Dino and Saiyaara
Bollywood gears up for an exciting late summer. The upcoming slate of films promises a mix of star power, fresh faces, and diverse genres. From comic capers to heartfelt dramas, here's our box office prediction for some of the most anticipated releases in the next 50 days. Housefull 5 Looks To Make A Box Office Splash With The Help Of Healthy Spot-Bookings The Akshay Kumar led comic caper with a murder twist, set to release on June 6 2025, has generated intrigue especially after the makers have confirmed that they are releasing two climaxes in theatres with two different killers. The ensemble is predicted to take a good Rs 23 crore net start on its opening day. Having said that, more was expected from the movie before the advance bookings began. The advance bookings have opened on a strictly decent note and that means that the spot-bookings have to be strong in order to manage the predicted figure. Sitaare Zameen Par Gears Up To Take A Modest Start For Aamir Khan's Standards Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, slated for a release shortly after Housefull 5, is expected to open at Rs 10.25 crore net on its first day. It is a very modest number for an Aamir Khan starrer. For an Aamir-led project, there's a benchmark of box office that fans and trade analysts expect. While the Genelia Deshmukh co-starrer doesn't seem to be meeting the commercial expectations so far, things can always change closer to the film's release. Aamir Khan hasn't had a good box office run for a while and fans will be hoping that this movie changes things for the actor who has delivered numerous memorable films in his career as a lead hero spanning across 5 decades. Maa Shall Aim To Take A Reasonable Start, With Some Significant Help From Shaitaan's Hit Theatrical Run Kajol's Maa, set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025, is poised for a Rs 4.25 crore opening day; a reasonable start for a film in its genre. The project, which has a thematic connection to the successful Shaitaan, is banking on Kajol's emotional heft and star power to draw audiences. The first unit has been appreciated and now we need to see how the other units are received. One must not ignore the fact that Aamir Khan's film will also be holding onto screens in its second week. Anurag Basu Will Look To Get Ample Support From 'Metros' For His Next Anurag Basu's Metro.. In Dino is creating waves with its first song, which has been warmly received by audiences. If this momentum carries forward, the film could open to a decent Rs 7 crore on its first day. The anthology format, coupled with Anurag Basu's knack for weaving emotional narratives, makes it a promising contender in the urban multiplex space. Ahaan Panday And Aneet Padda Will Hope To Recieve Audience Love Marking the Bollywood debut of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, Mohit Suri's Saiyaara is generating significant buzz with its intense teaser. The film, set for a July 18, 2025 release, is on course for an opening north of Rs 3.5 crore. As the film release draws nearer, we shall be more clear in making a prediction with higher accuracy. Pinkvilla Box Office Prediction (As On 2nd June, 2025) Movie Box Office Prediction Housefull 5 23 crore Sitaare Zameen Par 10.25 crore Maa 4.25 crore Metro.. Rekha's Umrao Jaan gears up for re-release, set to clash with Kajol's mytho-horror flick Maa
The re-release trend isn't going away anytime soon! Umrao Jaan starring ever-charming Bollywood diva Rekha is set to release on the big screen again. The cult-classic movie has been restored in 4K quality by the film bodies, National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Termed among the finest Hindi movies of all time, Umrao Jaan is now gearing up for its return to cinemas on June 27th. However, it won't be a clear run for the re-release as the film will be facing a major clash at the box office. Directed by Muzaffar Ali, the timeless classic is all set to face Kajol starrer mythological-horror drama, Maa, in a major clash. While Umrao Jaan is expected to re-release on limited shows, the latter is likely to grab most of the screens with an extensive release. Interestingly, both movies celebrate women in different genres. It will be a treat for cinema lovers to experience two female-led movies in a single day. For the unversed, Kajol's Maa is directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat Pathak. The horror movie is marketed as a part of the Shaitaan universe, which might help it to attract moviegoers and give it an upper hand against rival releases. Umrao Jaan, on the other hand, holds a legacy of artistic cinema, whose beautifully penned songs often go viral on instagram. The Rekha starrer has the potential to strike chords with the new-gen audience and emerge as a new sensation on social media. Originally released in 1981, Umrao Jaan stars Farooq Shaikh as Umrao's love interest, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, Satish Shah, and others. The movie explores the love, loss, and longing of a 19th-century Lucknow-based courtesan-poetess, played by Rekha. Umrao Jaan was a huge hit during its initial release. It remained etched in every cinephiles' memory because of its evergreen music, composed by Khayyam. Rekha's legendary performance in the film made her win the National Film Award for Best Actress. It also boasts of a soulful music library which includes- Dil Cheez Kya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti, and more. Restored in 4K version for the contemporary audience, Umrao Jaan will be re-released by PVR Inox as part of their Timeless Classics initiative, which previously re-released some of the landmark movies of Hindi cinema.
