PDP leader urged locals to ensure the annual pilgrimage, starting next month, runs smoothly
Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday said that the safety of pilgrims during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra is in the hands of Kashmir's local people. Speaking at a meeting in Pahalgam, south Kashmir's Anantnag district, she urged locals to ensure the annual pilgrimage, starting next month, runs smoothly.
Addressing PDP workers and stakeholders at the Pahalgam tourist resort, Mufti stressed the importance of protecting the yatris (pilgrims). 'The security of the yatris is your responsibility. Every stakeholder has the responsibility to safeguard the yatra and yatris. More than the police and the security forces, it is you who have to secure them," she said. She specifically called on party workers living along the yatra route to take an active role in safeguarding the pilgrims.
Mufti also highlighted the long tradition of Kashmiri hospitality towards Amarnath pilgrims. 'The way in which the people of Kashmir have welcomed them for centuries, God willing, they will be welcomed this year as well. They will be served well and they will return safe and sound to their homes," she said, expressing hope that the pilgrimage would boost tourism in the region.
The PDP leader noted that tourism in Kashmir suffered after a terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, which halted visitor arrivals. This has hit local ponywallas, hoteliers, shopkeepers, and drivers hard, many of whom are struggling to repay bank loans.
To help revive the local economy, Mufti urged Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the elected government to reopen popular tourist spots like Chandanwari, Aru, and Beetab Valley in Pahalgam.
She also appealed to the government to stop troubling ordinary citizens. 'I appeal to the government to stop calling ponywallas to Srinagar or Pahalgam for hearing. Do not do this to them. If you have to fight militants, do that, but do not harass common people. If you harass common people or make them your enemy, then it will not have good consequences," Mufti said.
Reflecting on past tensions, Mufti recalled a 2016 visit by an all-party delegation from Delhi during unrest following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. The delegation was turned away by Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
'I had said this before to the Government of India that there was a time when leaders from Delhi came to the doors of the Hurriyat, but Hurriyat did not open the doors. Today, the people of Jammu and Kashmir want to lend a hand of friendship towards you, but you should not do what the Hurriyat did that time," she stated.

NEW DELHI: A day after a video went viral showing dilapidated rail coaches requisitioned to transport over a thousand BSF personnel from Tripura to Jammu, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered the suspension of four railway officials responsible for the decision. Tight security arrangements made for Amarnath yatra, pilgrims should visit in large numbers: J&K LG

Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday urged devotees to visit in large numbers as foolproof security arrangements are in place for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and urged the people to visit in large numbers. Sinha, accompanied by senior officers, performed the 'Pratham Puja', which marked the ceremonial beginning of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Sinha also took stock of the arrangements at the Shrine. 'I would request all the devotees of Baba Barfani to visit in large numbers for the yatra and pray to Mahadev for the progress of J&K and the nation. SASB and administration have improved the pilgrims' facilities,' he said, adding that security forces have made foolproof security arrangements. 'Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, CRPF and other CAPFs have made foolproof security arrangements,' he said. The lieutenant governor lauded the contributions of people of J&K, civil society groups and all service providers. 'I have full faith that significant improvements to essential facilities and services will ensure this year's pilgrimage is memorable and spiritually fulfilling for all devotees. May Baba Amarnath ji keep showering his divine blessings on all of us,' Sinha said. This year, Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3, simultaneously from both the routes – the Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district-- and it will culminate on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Earlier lieutenant governor conducted on-site inspection of Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board's Yatri Niwas at Baltal axis in Ganderbal. Sinha ascertained the progress of the work being carried out at the site and directed the officials for timely completion of the infrastructure projects being developed to enhance facilities for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. At Domail, the lieutenant governor also interacted with the members of the taskforce and staff of BRO engaged in improving and maintaining the yatra track.

Row over 'dirty' train for BSF, 4 suspended

NEW DELHI: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has suspended four officials after controversy erupted over an old rake with dirty coaches being provided to transport BSF personnel from Tripura to J&K, for deployment during the Amarnath Yatra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The train's rake was changed. And action has been taken. Four officials responsible for the lapse have been suspended," Vaishnaw said Wednesday. Railway ministry stated: "The railway minister said the dignity of security forces is paramount and such negligence will not be tolerated at any level. An enquiry has also been ordered, so that such lapses don't recur". The coaching depot officer and three senior section engineers of Alipurduar division were suspended. "Another train was used for transportation of BSF personnel," said an official. Earlier in the day, after social media users, reacting to videos that surfaced online, criticised Railways, Northeast Frontier Railway Zone dismissed the episode. "The allegation that BSF was provided such kind of coach for travel is incorrect. Coaches are provided for travel only after necessary maintenance, repairs and cleaning. This video is of an unexamined coach which was being sent for repair and was not meant for travel of BSF forces," it posted. About 1,200 BSF personnel, bound for Jammu Tawi, were scheduled to board the special train, starting from Udaipur in Tripura on June 6. The train had to make a few stops, with personnel also boarding from Tripura, Assam and West Bengal.
