Tetteh: Women's participation key to a stable and just Libya

BY Libyan Express Aug 06, 2025 - 11:09 Updated: Aug 06, 2025 - 11:10 Hanna Tetteh: Libya needs all its women at the decision-making table
Libya's UN Special Representative, Hanna Tetteh, has called on Libyan women to take an active role in shaping the future of their country, stressing that every woman's voice matters in building a stable, inclusive Libya.
Speaking during an online open dialogue on Friday, Tetteh addressed 239 Libyan participants via Zoom in a session that explored key national issues—ranging from election options and political accountability to ways of increasing the participation of women, youth, and people with disabilities in the political process.
The session featured powerful testimonies from Libyan women, including one former candidate in municipal elections who described her experience as 'terrifying.' She shared that she had been subjected to online smear campaigns, the misuse of personal photos, indirect and direct threats, and pressure from certain figures to withdraw from the race.
Tetteh responded with words of encouragement:
'I thank you for your courage and determination. Libya doesn't just need your voice—it needs all Libyan women to take part in the national conversation and contribute to the decisions that shape the future. Some may try to silence women, but political participation isn't a competition—it's a responsibility we all share for the progress of society.'
The UN mission reaffirmed its support for increasing women's participation in Libya's political life and ensuring that their contributions are heard, respected, and protected. Vessel with military vehicles redirected to Misurata

BY Libyan Express Aug 06, 2025 - 11:39 The vessel, named AYA1 A Panama-flagged cargo ship reportedly carrying hundreds of military armoured vehicles en route to eastern Libya was intercepted in Greece before being allowed to continue its journey to the western port of Misurata, according to a detailed investigation by the Greek newspaper To Vima. The vessel, named AYA1, departed from Jebel Ali port in Dubai after arriving from India. On its way to Libya, it was initially stopped by a Dutch frigate operating under the European Union's Operation IRINI, the naval mission tasked with enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya. Control of the ship was later transferred to the Italian navy frigate ITS Morosini, which escorted it to the Greek port of Astakos. Upon arrival, the vessel was detained and searched. Although the cargo manifest listed cosmetics, cigarettes and electronic goods, initial inspections reportedly uncovered over 350 armoured vehicles and other military equipment on board. According to To Vima, the ship was initially destined for territories controlled by General Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya. However, after diplomatic intervention by Greece's Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs—and following the personal involvement of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis—the vessel was eventually cleared to depart. The ship arrived in Misrata between 30 and 31 July, according to the report. While the exact details of the cargo remain undisclosed, the incident raises fresh concerns about ongoing violations of the arms embargo and the role of international actors in Libya's conflict. The EU's Operation IRINI has previously intercepted similar shipments, including vessels transporting armoured vehicles and other weaponry to Libyan ports. As of now, there has been no official comment from Libyan authorities or confirmation from international organisations regarding the final recipient of the cargo. UN warns of catastrophic fallout if Israel expands Gaza assault

Jenca: Gaza is and must remain an integral part of the future Palestinian state The United Nations has expressed grave concern over reports that Israel may expand its military operations across the entire Gaza Strip, warning that such a move could have catastrophic consequences for civilians already enduring immense suffering. Addressing a UN Security Council session on Tuesday, Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča said any further escalation 'would risk catastrophic consequences' and could endanger the lives of the remaining hostages. He added that international law is unequivocal: 'Gaza is and must remain an integral part of the future Palestinian state.' The comments follow Israeli media reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met senior security officials to finalise a new war strategy, reportedly favouring a full military takeover of Gaza—a move likely to escalate an already devastating humanitarian crisis. China's deputy UN envoy, Geng Shuang, echoed the alarm, urging Israel to 'immediately halt such dangerous actions.' He called for an immediate ceasefire and pressed countries with influence to take meaningful steps to stop the violence. Ahead of the session, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticised countries pushing for the recognition of Palestinian statehood, claiming their actions had 'assassinated' a potential ceasefire and hostage deal. His remarks came as France, Canada, and the UK announced plans to recognise Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September—unless Israel makes concrete moves to end the suffering in Gaza. Meanwhile, the United States dismissed a UN-hosted ministerial conference that called for a renewed focus on a two-state solution as 'an unproductive publicity stunt.' US Deputy Ambassador Dorothy Shea claimed it had undermined ongoing mediation efforts. The humanitarian toll remains staggering. Gaza has endured months of continuous bombardment, mass displacement, and critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Rights groups have warned of growing famine-like conditions and the collapse of essential infrastructure. In a deeply emotional plea, Ilay David, the brother of an Israeli hostage recently shown in a Hamas-released video, addressed the Security Council and urged immediate international action. He called for the release of hostages and unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza. Observers warn that any large-scale military expansion would deepen the humanitarian crisis and risk further violations of international law, which prohibits collective punishment and requires the protection of civilians—even in armed conflict.
