Dlamini helps Banyana beat Senegal on penalties to book semifinal spot against Nigeria at Wafcon
Banyana forwards Hildah Magaia and Jermaine Seoposenwe were tightly marked and at times had to fetch the ball deep as the Senegalese defended well. Lebohang Ramalepe always gave Banyana options in attack and was the player who looked capable of finding an opening for Banyana.
Banyana coach Desiree Ellis made only one change after halftime, bringing Amogelang Motau on for Sibulela Holweni to shore up a midfield that battled to create as many chances for the strikers in this match.
As much as both sides tried, the match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes with no clear-cut chances created on both ends.
In the first half of extra-time Ramalepe was unlucky to have been judged offside after scoring, having latched on to an exquisite defence-splitting pass by Banyana skipper Refiloe Jane.
Magaia too saw her close-range shot in the second half of extra time parried away by a confident Adji Ndiaye in the Senegalese goals. Later a penalty appeal against Magaia was also turned down by the referee after a prolonged VAR examination.
Other than those chances there was very little that both teams did in the extra 30 minutes to show they wanted to avoid going to the penalties.
In the second semifinal also to be played on Tuesday, 2022 runners-up Morocco will face Ghana who also needed penalties to earlier on Saturday to oust Algeria.

Despite helping the South Africans reach the semifinals, the overall performance the team put on to obtain that result is one Desiree Ellis and her charges will be keen to quickly forget. Following a sluggish and lacklustre 120 minutes of soccer against a Senegal team which was intent on causing the biggest upset of the tournament by ousting the defending African champions, the contest ended 0-0 at Oudja's Honneur Stadium. Despite enjoying a large chunk of ball possession, the South Africans did not create any real chances in those two hours of football. The Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goalminder shut out two Senegalese spot kicks, while centre back Bambanani Mbane confidently struck the winning penalty for South Africa as they navigated to the semifinals. 'I said the game was not going to be easy, I said it was going to be a difficult game because of the group they were in and how they got out. We didn't expect anything less,' said Ellis. 'The first 15 minutes we showed a bit of nerves, trying to get into the game, but once we got into the game we nullified the threat, their two tall strikers. We dealt very well with their long ball, but sometimes we gave the ball away too cheaply… Senegal has improved from the last time we played them, the coach has done a fantastic job,' the Banyana Banyana coach added. It's clear that the South Africans will have to be much sharper than they were against Senegal. On the other hand, Banyana Banyana's clashes against record Wafcon winners Nigeria (with 11 titles) are always epic. The South Africans will need no motivation against their sworn rivals. Especially after the Super Falcons denied Banyana Banyana Olympic Games qualification in 2024. After successfully navigating the earlier rounds of Olympic qualifiers, Banyana Banyana and Nigeria were pitted against each other for the fourth and final round of qualifiers. In that close contest the Super Falcons soared to a slender 1-0 aggregate win over two legs. The result broke South Africa's hearts and condemned Banyana Banyana to a second successive Olympic qualification failure – despite their prominence on the African continent. This result may now be buried deep in Banyana Banyana's subconscious, but it is likely to resurface as fuel when Ellis's team aims for the Super Falcons on Tuesday. Traditionally, the Nigerians have enjoyed the most success in this fierce rivalry, hence their 11 continental titles to Banyana's one. Momentum shift However, over the past five years the tide has shifted slightly in favour of the South Africans. The Olympic qualification result was an anomaly based on recent results and Banyana Banyana will be hoping to prove it as such by doing what they did on the way to winning the 2022 Wafcon – beating Nigeria. Having been based in the city of Oudja since the tournament started, Banyana Banyana will now relocate to Casablanca. This is where the Super Falcons have been based for the tournament, something which Ellis feels will be a minor disadvantage for her team. 'As the technical team, our heads are already on planning for Nigeria. We played 120 minutes and we have a day less than Nigeria to prepare. We'll also have to travel, which takes a lot out of you,' Ellis stated. Banyana Banyana's mammoth match against Nigeria kicks off at 6pm. OPINION: Winning teams bring cheer to South Africa
From Banyana to the Boks to the U20 rugby stars, there was plenty to cheer this last weekend. There is nothing quite like the South African sports fan … when our teams win and are successful we're the best supporters out there, but when we lose, we can moan for days. But today we can all be proudly South African and celebrate a great sporting weekend. And we're not quite done yet either because there's some way to go for the Proteas, who're playing in a tri-series tournament in Zimbabwe, while Banyana Banyana are still in the running to defend their Wafcon title, so there could be more celebrations to come. But for now, let's celebrate Banyana, who have qualified for the Wafcon semifinals after beating Senegal 4-1 on penalties on Saturday night in Morocco. They next face Nigeria on Tuesday. Before Andile Dlamini's shot-stopping heroics, our rugby teams got the SA flag flying high with the reigning world champions, the Springboks, and the Junior Boks winning important matches. Future stars Siya Kolisi, back after a lengthy injury break, led the Boks to a big 55-10 win against Georgia in Mbombela; the side wrapping up their mid-year Tests unbeaten. They will next turn their attention to the Rugby Championship and bigger challenges, but things are looking good for Rassie Erasmus and his charges. And then it was the turn of Riley Norton and his powerful Junior Boks team to beat their New Zealand counterparts in the final of the U20 Championship, to lift the title for the first time in 13 years. What a performance that was by our young players and future Bok stars. Just like the senior Boks, who didn't lose a game in the last four weeks, Norton's team went unbeaten through the tournament in Italy, to be crowned junior champions of the world. We cannot wait to see how these young stars of the future develop and progress in their careers. All of these achievements and wins come not long after Temba Bavuma's Test Proteas won the championship final in London, beating Australia inside four days. It's good being a South African sports fan right now, so let's all enjoy it.

Boks ready to step it up against Aussies — Kolisi
After crushing Georgia 55-10, the Springboks are ready to move up another gear as they look ahead to their opening match in the Rugby Championship against Australia on August 16, skipper Siya Kolisi says. After experimenting in their games against the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia, the Boks are set to name a more experienced squad to face the Wallabies at Ellis Park. The 36-man squad will be named on Tuesday and is expected to include players suited to the way SA want to play in the Rugby Championship. Kolisi said the Boks were not completely satisfied with their performance at the weekend despite running out comfortable winners in Mbombela after leading 22-10 at halftime. 'It was a tough game. Credit to the Georgians, they came hard in the first half,' he said. 'Physically, they matched us most of the time, and we struggled at the breakdown; they were quite dominant there. 'So we were happy with the way we cleaned up in the second half. 'The problem was we weren't able to produce enough positives one after the other. 'We did something good and then we would make a mistake, so that slowed down our momentum. 'The game was also a bit slow and was very stop-start. 'But hopefully we can fix our problems and make sure that we build on our positives going forward.' The Boks fielded a new-look side against Georgia with props Boan Venter, Neethling Fouche and hooker Marnus van der Merwe all making their debuts. 'I am happy for the debutants and congratulations to them and their families,' Kolisi said. 'The coach is building squad depth while we are winning, and you can see the amount of competition in the group. 'The guys who played last week in Gqeberha set the standard. 'I think in the first half here we didn't live up to that standard and had to pick it up in the second half.' Bok coach Rassie Erasmus said he was satisfied with the win but attributed a stop-start performance to having rotated the squad throughout the four-match series (including the clash against the Barbarians). 'We're fairly happy if you look over the four games,' he said. 'We scored close to 50 points in each match and apart from the first Italy Test, defended pretty well. 'Georgia were physical and disruptive but that's not an excuse for us making so many errors. 'But I guess we must understand that if we chop and change teams like we have as we're building squad depth, you'll lose rhythm. 'We found that again in the last 20 minutes and we can be fairly happy with the scoreline, though one can always do better.' 'We'll name 36 guys on Tuesday for the Australia series and within that squad there'll be one or two guys that we experiment with, but the bulk of that squad will be experienced players who are suited to the way we want to play,' he said. 'The nice thing is that we've got a group of 48 players or so that we've used this year and there are quite a couple that we'd also like to give opportunities to, like Jaden Hendrikse, Jordan Hendrikse, Quan Horn and Renzo du Plessis. 'But this was a series where we wanted to experiment a little bit, so getting the scorelines we did is pretty satisfying. But the Rugby Championship is a step up.'
