Bill proposes inheritance rights for devadasi children, outlaws practice

Bengaluru: In a significant move aimed at dismantling the remnants of the devadasi system, the govt Tuesday introduced the Karnataka Devadasi (Prevention, Prohibition, Relief and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2025, making biological fathers legally accountable for children born to devadasis. The proposed law requires conclusive proof of paternity and will empower such children to claim their father's property. "The child of a devadasi shall be entitled to inherit and succeed to property of both parents," the bill states. "The person indicated as father under this section will retain his right to disprove such a claim of paternity through appropriate biochemical evidence." The bill prescribes penal action against anyone who "performs, permits, takes part in, or abets ceremonies dedicating a woman as a devadasi". Offenders will face imprisonment of no less than two years, which may extend to five years, and a fine of at least Rs 1 lakh. Repeat offenders will face harsher penalties including imprisonment of up to seven years but not less than two years, and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. If the practice occurs on temple premises, an investigation will be initiated against the temple committee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? The legislation is part of a wider legislative push by the state govt, which introduced eight bills Tuesday alone. Over the past two days, 28 bills have been tabled in the Karnataka legislature. The govt also introduced two separate bills — Karnataka Municipalities and Certain Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2025 — enabling local bodies to employ empanelled professionals for construction-related approvals and inspections. Under the proposed amendments, architects, engineers, structural engineers, MEP consultants, environment consultants, and town planners empanelled by local authorities will be authorised to inspect building sites before, during, and after construction to certify compliance with approved plans and report to authorities. The professionals will also be empowered to sanction building plans for certain categories of buildings as notified by the govt. The bills further introduce a "self-certification" provision, allowing licensed professionals to certify buildings directly, as specified by govt notification. The govt also tabled the Karnataka Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the administration to nominate its own representatives to all cooperative societies in the state. Under the amendment, the strength of cooperative society boards across sectors will increase from 13 to 15 members, with three nominated directly by the govt. The bill also introduces mandatory reservation in all cooperative societies for women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. In another important change, members — instead of directors — will be appointed by the board of one cooperative society to serve in another cooperative society. Mysuru City police intensify anti-drug operations

Mysuru: Mysuru City police have intensified their anti-drug operations and identified 341 individuals who consumed ganja and were possessing ganja and MDMA. Interestingly, the majority of them are labourers, daily-wage earners, and some of them are students and dropouts. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) KS Sundar Raj said under the leadership of commissioner of police Seema Latkar, city police have been conducting drives every day since July 27 and raiding lodges, paying guesthouses, shops, and suspected places, including parks, to verify if anyone is involved in the illegal business of peddling narcotic substances, including ganja and ecstasy drugs. About 2,300 youths were picked up for tests to examine whether they were under the influence of drugs. Of them, 332 tested positive for the consumption of drugs. Cases were filed against them under the NDPS Act, as the consumption of banned substances is an offence. The majority of those who tested positive were labourers. A few were students, and many were dropouts and unemployed, the DCP stated. A few were booked for possessing ganja and MDMA, banned narcotics. The consumers purchased drugs for consumption from individuals who approached them with drugs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo An investigation has been launched to track down the peddlers. During the raid, the houses of known offenders were also checked after obtaining court permission, police said. About 13.8kg of ganja and 149gm of MDMA, with a total worth of Rs 6.6 lakh, have been seized, the DCP explained. DCP (law and order) Bindu Mani is overseeing the surprise raids and awareness programmes to educate the public and students about the adverse impact of drug consumption and the punishment for peddling narcotic substances. The crack down comes in the wake of the arrest of four youths by Mumbai police, who were allegedly involved in producing narcotics in north Mysuru. This incident prompted local authorities to ramp up their efforts to tackle the drug menace. The drive aims to dismantle the drug network, if any, in Mysuru, focusing on both users and suppliers, and reflects the commitment of the police to create a drug-free environment. Koppal man's murder: BJP demands NIA probe, Rs 50 lakh ex gratia

Bengaluru: BJP raised the murder of a Hindu man in Koppal in the legislative assembly Wednesday and demanded the investigation be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA) and that Rs 50 lakh compensation be given to the victim's family. A BJP delegation also met governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot and urged him to intervene and direct the state govt to transfer the case, alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy by "extremist" groups. In its memorandum, BJP said Gavisiddappa Nayak, from the Valmiki community, a Scheduled Tribe, was murdered on Aug 3 in front of Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque in Koppal town. BJP claims the killing bore the stamp of PFI and SDPI and accused the govt of showing a soft corner to "dangerous elements". At about 7.30pm, one Syed attacked him with a machete and killed him… Police failed to take precautionary measures, which resulted in this brutal incident." He said protests and a bandh by the Valmiki Mahasabha and Hindu organisations forced the police to act, leading to a few arrests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuoc Hai: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo "Considering the economically poor background of the man's family, the govt must provide at least Rs 50 lakh in compensation," he said. "The family should also be given two acres of land, and one family member should be provided with a govt job." Koppal minister Shivaraj Tangadagi said he had visited the family and action will been taken. Speaker UT Khader reminded members that zero hour allowed only statements but not discussions, and said the govt would provide a detailed response later. Meanwhile, Koppal town police filed a suo motu complaint against Srikanth Hosakera, divisional convener of Hindu Jagran Vedike, for allegedly delivering a provocative speech during a protest march to condemn the murder of Gavisiddappa Nayak on Monday. The case was filed on a complaint by police constable Hanumesh, which states, "Srikanth's speech incites animosity among different communities. It disrupts peace and harmony.
