Love Curtain Bangs? Try Her Relaxed Sister, Trompe L'Oeil Bangs

Vogue4 days ago
At 43, I still find myself squaring off with the girl inside me when it comes to cutting the ends of my hair. I procrastinate, even when I know I really need it. I promise my hairdresser that, at the next appointment, for sure, I'll let them take the scissors to my lengths. When the moment comes, I'm making them promise to make the chop minuscule, just enough to clean up my mane.
By then, I've left it too late. My hair is grown out and broken, in need of more than a few centimeters off to keep it looking healthy. My comfort in Rapunzel-like hair, at risk. The more anxious I've gotten in the run-up, the more I've put it off, the more inches need snipped.
The last time I went to have my hair colored, my hairdresser suggested I get some long bangs, to my cheekbones, with the promise that my hair would look longer and healthier. 'This type of fringe visually lengthens the hair,' he told me as he took the scissors to my front pieces. And he wasn't wrong.
We're calling them the 'trompe l'oeil' bangs—the French phrase meaning that which 'deceives the eye.' Quique Sanchez, hairstylist at the Madrid-based salon Espacio Q, confirms this bangs-related revelation. 'It is true that this type of fringe creates the 'trompe l'oeil' effect of longer hair, because it visually lengthens the face and thus the contour of the hair,' Sanchez says. 'They integrate perfectly with the rest of the cut because they create continuity and length from a cascading effect, giving the impression of longer hair.'
Hairstylist and makeup artist Gabriel Llano adds that the key success with 'trompe l'oeil' bangs is that they're integrated seamlessly into the rest of your hairstyle, creating a 'frame that directs the eye downwards, especially if they are styled with a natural fall or slightly curled.'
Why get 'trompe l'oeil' bangs?
Long and short bangs have been top of the hair style trends and a regular request from those in the hair salon chair for quite some time now: Side fringes of the early '00s, baby bangs a la Emma Stone, and pumped up hair with big bangs to match by way of Keke Palmer. Curtain bangs have been the dominant, longer style—think Priyanka Chopra and Emily Ratajkowski's bouncy sets, which frame the face and hit at the cheekbones, or Dakota Johnson's ever-coveted, cool shape.

Ashley Judd Shows Off Curves in Bathing Suit to Talk About Menopause: ‘We Don't Care Club'

Ashley Judd is no longer caring what others think and embracing her inner child as she experiences postmenopause. Judd, 57, took to Instagram on Tuesday, July 22, to share a video of herself splashing around in the Baltic Sea while showing off her curves in a green one-piece swimsuit. 'Hi, I'm Ashley and I'm a member of the We Don't Care Club,' she said. 'Sometimes when I wear a swimsuit, I get a little chafing, like right down there, so I put on cornstarch. Good trick if you don't know it already.' After showing off a non-stinging type of jellyfish in her hands, Judd placed the sea creature back into the water and said she was 'picking my crotch and I don't care.' She told fans about her 'MSU Club,' or 'Make Stuff Up Club,' and said that as a 'postmenopausal woman, I don't care if you don't like the MSU Club.' Celebrities That Are Leading the Body-Positive Movement: Mindy Kaling, Demi Lovato, Jameela Jamil and More Next, Judd flung herself backward into the water to soak her hair and showed off the cellulite on her legs, again telling fans, 'I don't care.' She also did a handstand, a belly flop and a backflip. In the caption, Judd wrote, ''Cause menopause (peri - post) is human biology. It is universal to females & global. What can be a hope of We Don't Care Club? What will I, with my freedom & mirth, when I let go of caring about stupid, controlling norms about my female body, be free to enJOY?' Menopause is the natural phase when periods stop for good, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms include hot flashes, sleep changes and mood swings. It can happen in someone's 40s and 50s, but the average age is 51 in the U.S., the clinic reports. There is also perimenopause, which is the stage leading up to menopause, and postmenopause, which is typically 12 months after periods end. Judd encouraged her followers to 'play, be silly, have fun and feel boundless joy.' 'I bask in the unselfconscious being-ness of my True Self. My Inner Child is free to emerge. She feels confidence & glee,' she continued. 'If you let yourself be free, how would your True Self & Inner Child spend your Carefree Timelessness?' Judd asked how readers can 'let go of what others expect, think, need [and] want. What do 🤍YOU🤍 feel, need, want, from yourself? Judd tagged Melani Sanders, the creator of the 'We Do Not Care' movement, and promoted her own 'Make Stuff Up Club.' Katherine Heigl on Her Perimenopausal Journey, C-Section Scars and Aging in Hollywood 'Inner Children🌸 have such beautiful, creative imaginations. They want to be seen, heard, be safe, & play. If as an adult, I am caught up in what others think of me, I ignore, neglect, & abandon my own tender Self. Today, that's off the table,' Judd concluded. 'Into the Sea for me, to splash & play!' Judd revealed she was 'post-menopausal since 2018' via a June 4 Instagram post. 'And super comfortable with that. Peri, menopause, and post-menopause is human biology and medically accurate,' she wrote. 'Sex education is essential. I am rejoicing in @justbeingmelani un muzzling of peri/post/menopausal expression and her inviting in all kinds of women to liberate their 'I don't cares!' We are enough, we do enough, it is enough. It is okay, we are okay. It is human biology. Fact and true. To all my menopausal ladies out there, what are your don't cares?!' Solve the daily Crossword

Kylie Jenner Took Summer's Polka Dot Nail Trend to the Next Level

Getty Images Leave it to Kylie Jenner to take summer's polka dot nail art trend to a whole 'nother level. The reality star and Kylie Cosmetics founder, known for her glamorous approach to all things hair, makeup, and style, combined the classic dotted style with two more nail trends for something that feels 100 percent Kylie. Jenner has been enjoying a European vacation with friends and her children, Stormi and Aire (did you catch her adorable GWRM video with Stormi?), and, well, you can't enjoy the summer sunshine without a manicure to match! Jenner worked with London-based manicurist Michelle Humphrey on her latest set, and Humphrey didn't just decorate Jenner's nails with medium-sized polka dots atop a sheer base—she mixed them up with a white-tipped French manicure and gave the dots a shiny finish for a little extra pizzazz. Jenner's nails were filed into a long oval shape and painted with a sheer base, like the one you'd typically get with a French manicure. Humphrey then added the signature white tips of a French, but she and Jenner didn't stop there! Instead of regular polish dots, the two went for something with a bit more sparkle factor: chrome-finish metallic dots scattered all over the nail, including atop the white tips! Jenner wrote that she was 'obsessed' with the set and I am too. It manages to be both subtle and glam at the same time, so you could easily wear it to work or for a wedding or summer party and it would fit right in. The Kylie Cosmetics founder has been back into nail art this year, including with a snakeskin-printed set that would have been right at home on King Kylie Tumblr and the sweetest studded pastel French manicure. TBH, I often reference her tiny bug-themed manicure from last summer, which was so adorable and so out of character. (Those lime-green tips!) What's next for Jenner and her nail art? You know I'm paying attention. More fun celebrity manis: Megan Thee Stallion's Nails Are the Equivalent of Christian Louboutin Stilettos You Could Play "I Spy" with J. You Could Play "I Spy" with J. Lo's Glittery 3D Nails

Getty Images As the parent of a four-year-old, I play a lot of 'I Spy"—in the car, at restaurants, poring over the iconic I Spy book series. You know what would fit right in in the pages of those books? Jennifer Lopez's latest manicure! Lopez's concert nails, designed by her go-to manicurist Tom Bachik, are a visual feast with so many blink-and-you'll-miss-them references, they needed their own Instagram grid post. If you were watching her from the arena floor, you probably wouldn't get to see all the details, which is why we're so thankful Bachik posted a close-up at his work so we could pore over every intricately designed nail. The long, coffin-shaped nails were a mix of burgundy, milky pale pink, and gold tones, embellished with sparkling charms, gemstones, and pearls for a royal vibe. Lopez is currently traveling through Europe on her 'Up All Night' tour, which kicked off in Spain. However, the singer-actor-dancer brought a little bit of home to the stage with one of her nails, which featured the New York Yankees logo in gold and rhinestones; more gemstones danged from the 'Y," ending in a large garnet stone. There were bows, crosses, sacred hearts, and even what appears to be the Chanel interlocking 'C' logo, framed by dangling small pearls. See what I mean about 'I Spy?' I spy, with my little eye… Though Lopez typically wears a much more neutral manicure for her day-to-day life and red carpet events, she likes to go all out with her performance nail art. For a trip to Dubai, she and Bachik whipped up a Swarovski crystal butterfly manicure that we're still thinking about. When she performed at an Elie Saab show in late 2024, her nails were encrusted with even more Swarovski crystals for the definition of superstar sparkle. Lopez has a full touring schedule through mid-August; the 'Up All Night' tour takes her through Italy, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, and more. We've got a feeling Bachik is already busy whipping up many more ornate manicures for us to ogle. Can't wait!
