Brihattar Bharat has blessed geographies from the icy Himalayas to the lush Ghats and from the arid Desert to the dense forests of the Northeast. Hidden within these landscapes are thousands of springs which are locally known by various names like naula, johad, kul, chashma, and odi. These freshwaters are more than sources of drinking water which have sustained life for millennia, with cradles of culture, spirituality, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge.
As modern infrastructure expands, changes in lifestyle and climate threaten natural resources.Once-abundant springs are drying up or becoming polluted. Yet, nestled within rural communities are stories of indigenous wisdom and community stewardship that have preserved many of these life-giving sources.
Ecological Significance of Springs
Springs are natural points where groundwater surfaces due to pressure or geological formations. They serve as perennial sources of water in both highland and arid regions. Springs recharge rivers, support agriculture, and form the basis of micro-ecosystems that sustain endemic flora and fauna.
For instance, in the Himalayan belt, nearly 60-70% of the remote and Janjatiya (tribal) population depends on springs for drinking water and agriculture. Springs maintain soil moisture essential for the biodiversity-rich rainforests. In Janjatiya areas of Odisha and Chhattisgarh, springs feed johads (small ponds), which in turn support farming and fishing.
Unfortunately, many of these springs are drying due to deforestation, urban expansion, mining, and erratic rainfall patterns. According to reports by the National Institute of Hydrology, over 50% of Himalayan springs have seen reduced discharge in the last two decades.
Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Spring Preservation
Local communities have historically developed intricate systems to identify, manage, and conserve spring water. These practices are interwoven with ecological balance, agricultural rhythms, and cultural beliefs.
1. Naulas of Uttarakhand
In Uttarakhand, naulas are stone-lined perennial springs which are sacred water temples, often built near forests. Villagers perform rituals at these sites, and there's a restriction against polluting or altering them. Traditionally, only women fetch water from the naulas, maintaining a gendered custodianship rooted in care and sanctity.
Villages follow a rotational cleaning calendar, ensuring that the spring remains unclogged by debris. In some places, water from the naula is used exclusively for drinking, while other uses are diverted to rainwater harvesting pits.
2. Kul and Khatris in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir
The kul system in Himachal Pradesh channels glacial melt or spring water through hand-dug canals to agricultural fields. These are managed by kul-pals (water custodians) appointed by the village council. This centuries-old system ensures equitable distribution and timely desilting.
Similarly, in Kashmir, traditional khatris (stone-covered spring water sources) provide water which are central to community gatherings and folklore. Many are dedicated to local saints or Sufi mystics, reinforcing their spiritual value.
3. Odis and Johads in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh
In central India, especially among the Bhil and Gond tribes, springs are protected as ancestral gifts. The odi means a small spring-fed pit is considered sacred, and no one is allowed to cut trees around it. Local festivals like Jal Amavasya are celebrated near these water sources to express gratitude.
In Rajasthan's Alwar district, water conservationist Rajendra Singh revitalized over 11,000 johads (traditional water harvesting systems fed by springs and monsoonal flow), reviving five rivers in the process. His success underscores how traditional knowledge, when aligned with modern environmental planning, can yield remarkable results.
Cultural Heritage and Sacred Geography
Springs are often revered in Bharatiyata astirthas (places of pilgrimage). Many are associated with ancient texts, sages, or gods, and are thus embedded within the spiritual geography of the land.
1. Spring-Worship in the Northeast
In Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur, springs are considered abodes of spirits and ancestors. Communities conduct cleansing rituals to 'appease' the spring and ensure a bountiful monsoon. The Zeliang tribe celebrates the Mlei Kep, where a sacred spring is decorated with flowers and offerings to mark the new agricultural cycle.
2. Gangotri and Yamunotri
The sacred springs of Gangotri and Yamunotri are believed to be the earthly emergence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Pilgrims trek arduous paths just to catch a glimpse of the bubbling icy springs. Rituals here symbolize the beginning of spiritual journeys and ecological consciousness.
3. Western Ghats
In Karnataka and Kerala, springs are part of sacred groves (kaavu), which are ecosystems preserved around natural springs and worshipped as Devi sthalas (goddess shrines). No tree can be cut and no animal hunted here. These groves form a natural buffer against ecological degradation and are rich in endemic species and medicinal plants.
Threats to Springs and the Way Forward
Despite their importance, springs are often neglected in national water policy frameworks. Rapid urbanization, deforestation, and unregulated tourism around spring ecosystems have led to pollution and drying of these sources. Moreover, climate change has disturbed recharge cycles.
However, efforts are underway:
♦ The Spring-Shed Management Initiative by NITI Aayog and UNDP in partnership with NGOs is working to map and rejuvenate Himalayan springs through geo-hydrological assessments and community training.
♦ Arghyam, a Bengaluru-based foundation, is building digital spring atlases and supporting community spring governance.
♦ Local innovations, such as 'Spring Health Cards' in Meghalaya, help monitor seasonal discharge and quality parameters with community participation.
To preserve these lifelines, integration of traditional knowledge with scientific tools, ensure community involvement, and recognize springs as cultural heritage sites deserving of legal protection. Like community stewardship models, inclusion in school curriculum, GPS mapping and digitalisation. Springs with cultural and ecological significance should be recognized as protected heritage ecosystems, similar to monuments.

In July, the Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh hit the headlines when two brothers married a single woman in a traditional wedding ceremony attended by hundreds of guests. The marriage sparked a debate in India. The brothers, who belong to the Hatti tribal community, had participated in 'jodidara' – a local custom of fraternal polyandry that allows brothers to marry and live with one woman. While polyandry is not new to the region, the attention it received – and the circulation of videos and images of the event on social media – raised a larger question about the role of tradition in modern times, especially when it involves marriage, gender and transgresses legal norms. Polyandry has been a part of India's cultural history for centuries. In India's Himalayan regions – the focus of my PhD research on gender, marriage and sexuality – fraternal polyandry was primarily undertaken to prevent the subdivision of scarce land among male siblings and to ensure that family labour was pooled. But polyandry is not limited to the Himalayan region. Anthropologist Paul Hershman, in his ethnography of rural Punjab, documents a version of polyandry among Jat Sikh families in which a woman is married to several brothers, for similar material economic ends. In such communities, polyandry was a survival strategy in a challenging environment tied directly to landholding practices and kinship values. The lower sex ratio of women was also a reason for this kind of marriage. The oldest brother would be defined in a legal sense as the husband, but all brothers would share in the economic, sexual and parental roles played by the wife. In time, a clutch of socio-legal and demographic shifts have contributed to the decline of polyandry in these regions. The introduction of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, banning the practice, was among the most pertinent. Moreover, changes in inheritance laws requiring that property be divided equally among male siblings made it no longer economically necessary to have a relationship with several brothers. Though polyandry is not recognised under the formal Hindu Marriage Act, tribal communities such as the Hattis have continued with their own set of customs and traditions relating to marriage and inheritance. The government has extended protection to these customs by permitting such traditions to continue in tribal areas. In areas such as Sirmaur, polyandrous unions, though not formally registered, are socially accepted and have been given informal legitimacy when it comes to family rights and property matters. What is particularly interesting about last month's marriage in Sirmaur is its visibility and the language of consent, along with a modern vocabulary of emotional understanding, equality and consent. When interviewed by local and national media, Sunita, the wife, confidently stated that this was her choice. She had a mutual commitment to both men, she said, and she understood their relationship was based on mutual care and responsibility. This demonstrates a modern awareness of partnership, emotional labour and shared obligations. This change indicates a larger shift in the social understanding of relationships for tribal communities. Consent is no longer silent or assumed: it is verbal, claimed and asserted publicly. This understanding of those who participate in this marriage seems different from the way it would have been, even a generation ago. The brothers too spoke directly about ' sensitivity', 'mutual respect' and 'emotional balance'. The modern framing of this relationship as one of mutual choice and emotional negotiation demonstrates how even longstanding customs can evolve, absorbing new values within the purview of older structures. Tradition is being reimagined. Sunita's statements have become a topic of debate, particularly among those who see her marriage as a welcome public show of agency within a customary arrangement often denounced as backward. It calls into question whether polyandry and related practices actually allow women to exercise power against the norms of patriarchy. In a national context in which Hindu monogamous marriage has become the normative legal and moral framework, practices like polyandry are simply framed as 'being against Indian culture' or 'a shameful act'. Polyandrous marriages challenge a singular understanding of Indian family norms. There is also an unsettling communal understanding of the practice, as if it is an extension of polygamous marriages permitted for Muslims. The marriage between Sunita and the Negi brothers compels us to ask: are our laws capable of accommodating the fluid realities of love and kinship that live outside the nuclear family? Can we imagine justice not just through conformity but in the recognition of a multiplicity of lived experiences? Most importantly, can we respect forms of consent that are produced and reproduced from within a community and its traditions?

Uttarkashi: Six days after a devastating mudslide struck an Indian Army camp in Harsil in the aftermath of a cloudburst in Dharali, there is still no sign of the nine soldiers who went missing while engaged in search and rescue operations. The Indian Army has confirmed that the missing personnel include one Junior Commissioned Officer and one Non-Commissioned Officer. In a post on X, the Surya Command of the Indian Army stated, "One Junior Commissioned Officer, one Non Commissioned Officer and seven soldiers of the Indian Army, while carrying out Search & Rescue for victims of the flash flood at Dharali on 05 Aug 2025, were struck by a second mudslide and are still feared missing." The tragedy occurred on August 5 when a cloudburst in Uttarkashi's Dharali triggered a flash flood that swept away an entire village, leaving several missing. The disaster occurred just 4 kilometres from the Army camp in Harsil. The Indian Army, acting as the first responder, mobilised 150 personnel to the disaster site within 10 minutes to initiate rescue and relief operations. However, a subsequent mudslide struck the Harsil camp soon after, sweeping away the area and the nine soldiers. The Army expressed hope for their safe return, adding, "They went to save lives with selfless courage and devotion to duty. We pray with folded hands for their safe return to their families, brothers and the Nation they serve." Despite their own men being missing, the Army has remained deeply involved in relief efforts in the affected region. A total of 1,273 stranded people have been airlifted from Dharali to safer locations. The Indian Air Force and Army aviation units deployed Chinook, MI-17, and ALH helicopters for evacuation missions and to deliver essential relief supplies, including food, medical kits, fuel, solar lights, blankets, and hygiene items, to remote and affected communities. Electricity and telecom services were restored by August 8, with wireless emergency communication systems set up in inaccessible areas. Road clearance work and the construction of a Bailey bridge at Limchagad were prioritised to restore crucial connectivity. The Indian Army's Bengal Engineers Group (BEG), including the police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), worked tirelessly in challenging conditions and heavy rainfall to build the Bailey bridge. Search, medical, and communication teams also joined the mission, leading to the completion of the 90-foot Bailey bridge at 5 P.M. on Sunday. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Army engineers constructed the bridge, which stands on the Gangotri National Highway, spanning the Limchagad between Gangnani and Dharali. With a load capacity of nearly 50 tonnes, it has provided a significant boost to ongoing relief and rescue operations in the difficult Himalayan terrain.
