LG Chem, a leading chemical company under LG Group, said Monday that it jointly developed a silver paste with Japan's Noritake for use in silicon carbide automotive power semiconductors, specifically for bonding chips to substrates.
Noritake, an expert in precision ceramics, supplies materials and equipment to the semiconductor and automotive sectors. Demand for semiconductors capable of handling high voltages and currents is growing with the rise of electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies. Traditional soldering methods struggle with the high operating temperatures — up to 300 degrees Celsius — associated with these components.
The newly developed silver paste incorporates silver nanoparticles and combines LG Chem's formulation and particle design technology with Noritake's dispersion expertise. It is designed to deliver both high heat resistance and effective thermal conductivity.
A notable feature of the product is its extended shelf life. It can be stored at room temperature for up to six months, eliminating the need for refrigeration and improving logistics and on-site usability.
The two companies plan to continue their partnership to advance adhesive materials for future semiconductor applications. The market for silver paste in automotive power semiconductors is expected to grow to 850 billion won ($623.3 million) by 2030.

LS Cable begins mass production of world's highest-capacity HVDC cable

South Korean power grid facility manufacturer LS Cable & System announced Monday that it has begun mass production of a high-voltage direct current cable with the highest transmission capacity currently available. The new cable transmits up to 525 kilovolts and withstands temperatures up to 90 degrees Celsius, offering as much as 50 percent more capacity than standard HVDC cables, which are typically rated for 70 degrees Celsius, the company said. LS Cable & System stated that this is the first time a high-voltage cable with this level of performance has entered mass production. 'The competitiveness of the HVDC market depends on securing commercially viable technology,' said Lee In-ho, chief technology officer at LS Cable & System. The cable will be used in the first section of an 8-gigawatt, 250-kilometer power grid project, which will link coastal facilities in Gangwon Province to a substation in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, as part of the transmission route to Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. While the company plans to supply cables for the remaining sections of the grid, it also aims to leverage its expertise to participate in other projects, including Korea's 'West Coast Energy Highway' and European projects led by offshore grid operator TenneT. The West Coast Energy Highway, an 11 trillion won ($8.1 billion) project announced during President Lee Jae-myung's election campaign, involves transporting power from offshore wind farms in the southwest to the Seoul metropolitan area through an underwater HVDC network. Global demand for HVDC systems, estimated at 1.8 trillion won in 2018, is expected to grow to 41 trillion won by 2030, driven by the technology's ability to transmit up to three times more power than traditional high-voltage alternating current cables while reducing transmission losses.

LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo has visited Indonesia this month to inspect the group's battery manufacturing and research operations, according to the group Monday, underscoring efforts to strengthen its competitiveness amid a temporary slowdown in global electric vehicle demand. According to group officials, Koo toured the production lines of Hyundai LG Indonesia Green Power, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Hyundai Motor Group, located near Jakarta, earlier this month. The 320,000 square-meter facility, with an annual capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours, is Indonesia's first EV battery cell plant and is a key pillar in LG's global battery production network. During the visit, Koo called on employees to focus on securing differentiated competitiveness for LG's batteries, particularly in comparison with global rivals, and emphasized the importance of close collaboration with partners to overcome the slowdown in global EV demand growth. As part of the visit, the LG chief also toured LG Electronics' production and research complex in Cibitung, West Java, where products such as TVs, monitors and signage systems are manufactured. Since establishing a local research unit next to the Cibitung plant in 2023, LG Electronics has built an integrated base that connects research, production and sales operations, using it as a base for targeting the broader Southeast Asian market. At LG Electronics' Jakarta sales office, Koo met with local executives to discuss customer needs, distribution trends and competitive dynamics in Southeast Asia. LG has been ramping up efforts to tap into growth opportunities in the so-called Global South that includes India, Indonesia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, seeking to ride the economic momentum in these emerging markets.
