Pentagon Announces Marines Withdrawal from Los Angeles

Amir Haggag
The Pentagon announced the withdrawal of 700 Marines from Los Angeles, as part of a gradual drawdown of forces deployed to support immigration enforcement efforts, under orders from US President Donald Trump.
USA Today reported on Tuesday that this action comes a week after 2,000 National Guard troops were withdrawn from the city following a decline in the intensity of protests that erupted last June against federal immigration policies, some of which turned violent.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that "the Marines played a critical role in restoring order."
He added that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the redeployment of forces as the situation in Los Angeles stabilized, stressing that "their presence sent a clear message that chaos will not be tolerated."
Trump and the US Secretary of Defense ordered the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles last June to protect federal buildings and support Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers pursuing immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.

Egypt reiterates its emphatic refusal of the displacement of Palestinians, calls on countries not to participate in this heinous crime

Egypt has firmly renewed its rejection of any Israeli plans to displace Palestinians from their historical homeland, whether in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, under any pretext—be it forced or voluntary. It condemned all forms of displacement, including those carried out through policies of starvation, land confiscation, settlement expansion, or by making life unliveable for Palestinians in their own land. In a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2025, the foreign ministry expressed Egypt's deep concern over recent reports suggesting that Israel has held consultations with certain countries regarding the potential resettlement of Palestinian refugees from Gaza. The ministry criticized these discussions as part of a broader, rejected Israeli strategy to depopulate Palestinian territories and undermine the Palestinian cause. Egypt emphasized that it will not accept, support, or participate in any plans that involve the displacement of Palestinians, calling such proposals a historic injustice that lacks any moral or legal legitimacy. The statement urged the international community—particularly peace-supporting nations—to reject complicity in such an 'immoral and illegal crime' that would violate the principles of international humanitarian law, constitute a war crime, and amount to ethnic cleansing. It further noted such actions would blatantly breach the four Geneva Conventions. Finally, Egypt warned of the grave historical and legal consequences that would befall any party involved in or facilitating such displacement. It also stressed the potential for far-reaching political repercussions across the region and beyond if such policies were to proceed.

FM, his German counterpart discuss regional developments in phone cal

CAIRO, Aug 16 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty had a phone call with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul as part of ongoing consultations on regional developments, with a primary focus on the situation in Gaza. During the call, both ministers reiterated their strong condemnation of the use of starvation as a weapon against the Palestinians. Abdelatty briefed his German counterpart on the latest catastrophic humanitarian and medical conditions in the Gaza Strip, the ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and Egypt's continued efforts to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave. He emphasized the need to remove all Israeli-imposed obstacles preventing full, unconditional access to aid. The call also covered the highly dangerous implications of recent Israeli policies including statements about the so-called 'Greater Israel.' Abdelatty stressed the risks such actions pose to regional security and stability. Abdelatty firmly reiterated Egypt's total rejection and condemnation of Israel's continued military operations in Gaza and its expansion of settlements in the West Bank. He warned that such policies undermine all chances of de-escalation and peace. He called for urgent action by the European Union to help curb the ongoing Israeli escalation. Both ministers strongly condemned the deliberate starvation of Palestinians, which has led to severe deterioration in humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Abdelatty stressed that these repeated Israeli violations represent flagrant breaches of international law, international humanitarian law, and all international conventions and norms. He welcomed the German government's decision to suspend arms and military equipment exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza operations, describing the move as a step in the right direction. For his part, the German foreign minister praised Egypt's strenuous efforts in seeking a ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza. The call also touched on developments in the Iranian nuclear file, where Abdelatty asserted Egypt's commitment to a peaceful solution, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation in the region and the need to avoid military solutions. Egyptian, Algerian FMs assert their rejection of Israeli cabinet's decision to expand aggression on Gaza

CAIRO, Aug 16 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdelatty and Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf asserted their firm rejection of the Israeli cabinet's decision to expand its military aggression on Gaza. They condemned the move as a dangerous escalation aimed at entrenching the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and continuing the systematic genocide against the unarmed Palestinian people, a blatant violation of international law and humanitarian law and a direct attack on the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state. This came during a phone call on Saturday between the two ministers as part of the ongoing coordination and consultation between the two brotherly nations. Abdelatty offered condolences to the Algerian government and people following the tragic bus accident in Algiers, which resulted in several fatalities and injuries. He wished the injured a speedy recovery and emphasized Egypt's full solidarity with Algeria in this difficult time. The call touched on bilateral cooperation, with both ministers expressing satisfaction over the growing momentum in Egyptian-Algerian relations in recent months. They agreed to continue working together to deepen cooperation across various fields and to leverage the current momentum to strengthen political, economic and development partnerships, in line with the aspirations of both peoples for stability and prosperity. On the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty briefed his Algerian counterpart on Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, facilitate the release of hostages and detainees, and ensure the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. Both sides underscored the urgent need for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, swift and unconditional delivery of humanitarian and medical assistance and an end to Israel's systematic policies of starvation and indiscriminate killing, which only serve to fuel extremism and violence. The two ministers reiterated their unequivocal rejection of Israel's illegal settlement policies and expansion in occupied Palestinian territories, denouncing them as serious violations of international law and a major obstacle to achieving a comprehensive and just peace. The call also addressed regional developments, particularly in Libya, where Abdelatty stressed the importance of preserving Libya's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Egypt's support for the UN-led peace process and the need for a Libyan-led political solution, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, and the dismantling of militias.
