"According to ATC, when it tried to contact the plane back, there was no response": Secretary of Civil Aviation Samir Kumar Sinha
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 14 (ANI): Days after the tragic crash of the Air India flight 171, Secretary of Ministry of Civil Aviation, Samir Kumar Sinha on Saturday giving details stated that after Air Traffic Control (ATC) had tried contacting the plane, it had not received any response, minutes after which the plane crashed in Medhaninagar.
'At 1:39 pm, the pilot informed Ahmedabad ATC that it was a May Day, i.e., full emergency. According to ATC, when it tried to contact the plane, it did not receive any response. Exactly after 1 minute, this plane crashed in Medhaninagar, which is located at a distance of about 2 km from the airport. The captain of the plane was Sumit Sabharwal, and the first officer was Clive Sundar,' Sinha said, addressing the media.
He further stated that the plane had started losing its height after reaching a height of 650 feet.
'The AIC 171 plane carrying a total of 242 passengers on board, including 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 crew members, had taken off at 1:39 p.m. and within a few seconds, after it reached a height of 650 feet, it had started sinking, i.e. losing height...' he added.
The Secretary further added that the plane had no history of crashes and had completed the Paris-Delhi-Ahmedabad sector previously without any accident.
'As far as the entire history of the plane is concerned, before this accident, the plane had completed the Paris-Delhi-Ahmedabad sector without any accident. Due to the accident, the runway was closed at 2:30 pm, and after completing all the protocols, the runway of Ahmedabad was opened for limited flights from 5 PM,' he stated.
Meanwhile, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that the recovery of the aircraft's Black box from the debris was critical to the investigative process.
'The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which was formed specifically to look into the incidents, accidents that happen around aircraft, was immediately mobilised. One important update from the technical investigation which is happening through the AAIB is the recovery of the black box yesterday around 5 pm from the site, the AAIB team believes that this decoding of the black box is going to give an in depth insight into what would have happened during the process of the crash or moments before the crash itself. We are also eagerly waiting for what the results or the report are going to be once the AAIB goes through its full investigation...' Naidu said while addressing a press briefing.
He also stated that the crash had shaken the entire nation.
'The last two days have been very difficult, especially for the ministry and everyone else. The incident that happened in Ahmedabad has shaken the entire nation. My deepest condolences to the family members who have lost their loved ones in the incident. I have also personally lost my father to a road accident, so to a certain extent, I can understand the pain and anguish the family members are feeling,' he further added. (ANI)

Calling for strict compliance with safety norms, the Chief Minister said, "An emergency meeting has been called immediately, in which instructions have been given that the rules of our DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) should not be violated, and the pilots flying in the upper Himalayan areas should have experience of the region. Aviation companies should also ensure this." "A control and command centre should be set up. Strict action will be taken against the culprits in this accident... Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured," he told ANI. Earlier this morning, seven people, including the pilot on board a helicopter were killed after the chopper crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said. The Aryan Aviation Helicopter was flying to Guptkashi from the Kedarnath Dham when it crashed at 5:30 am today. The deceased have been identified as Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan (39), resident of Jaipur, Vikram Rawat (47) a Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee representative and resident of Rasi, Vinod Devi (66), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Trishti Singh (19), resident of Uttar Pradesh, Rajkumar Suresh Jaiswal (41), resident of Gujarat, Shraddha Rajkumar Jaiswal and Kashi (2), resident of Maharashtra. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched under the direction of SDRF Commander Arpan Yadav. The incident spot was located in a very inaccessible and dense forest area, where a fast-paced and coordinated rescue operation was carried out by the joint teams of SDRF, NDRF, and local police. Rescue teams worked in inclement weather to retrieve the bodies of the deceased.(ANI)

'Mayday! Mayday!' Air India pilot's final radio message before deadly Ahmedabad plane crash
Ill-fated Air India aircraft's pilot Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's last radio message to Ahmedabad air traffic control was a 'Mayday' call. As per aviation authorities, flight AI 171 crashed seconds after Sabharwal's message to the ATC in Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, SK Sinha, the Aviation Ministry Secretary, said that the pilots made the distress call to ATC when the plane failed to rise above 650 feet after takeoff. Seconds after the distress call, ATC responded but the plane had crashed by then, killing 241 people on board. A British national seated in 11A has been identified as the sole survivor of the incident. "Thrust not achieved... falling... Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!," was the pilot's last message to ATC as reported by TOI. As per aviation authorities, the plane took off at 1:39 PM and a few seconds after, started sinking after reaching a height of 650 feet. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was bound for London's Gatwick when it crashed. Of the 242 people on board, only one passenger survived the crash. The black box of the plane was recovered by officials during the rescue and relief operations. As per Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu, the data from the black box will help identify the exact cause of the deadly plane crash.

U'khand chopper crash: Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau to carry out probe
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 15 (ANI): The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will investigate Sunday morning's helicopter crash near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag District, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated. The DGCA further said that, in light of the crash, the frequencies of helicopter operations to Char Dham would be reduced as a precautionary measure. Enhanced surveillance and operational reviews are also being carried out by DGCA. 'Today, Aryan Aviation Bell 407 helicopter VT-BKA operating flight on sector Shri Kedarnath ji- Aryan Helipad, Guptkanshi, was involved in an accident. There were five passengers, one infant and one crew member on board. The helicopter took off at 05:19 hours for Guptkanshi and crashed near Gaurikund,' DGCA said providing details of the crash. Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Department (UCADA), Sonika, stated that helicopter shuttle services in the area had been closed given the ongoing relief operations and weather conditions in the valley . Sonika further stated that the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) will reach the site soon. 'Since the rescue operation is underway and seeing the weather conditions in the valley, our shuttle services have been closed. Almost all the helicopters are involved in the rescue operation. DM and SSP will also reach the site soon,' Sonika told ANI. 'At around 5:30 AM, we got the information that a helicopter, which was going from Shri Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, could not be located. After some time, it was learnt that it had crashed near Gaurikund. Rescue operation is underway, SDRF teams have reached the spot. A total of 6 passengers and one pilot were on board the helicopter...' she further said. All seven people onboard the helicopter, including the pilot, that crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund early today are feared dead, the State Disaster Response Force said. According to preliminary information, the helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed due to inclement weather. (ANI)
