Trowbridge School ordered to close temporarily to address lead hazards, students to relocate
The Milwaukee Health Department has ordered Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies to temporarily close starting Monday after finding 'unsafe lead dust levels' within the building, a department spokesperson confirmed Thursday night.
Students will be relocated to the Wisconsin Conservatory ofLifelong Learning, 1017 N. 12th St., while work to address the lead hazards is underway, according to a letter to staff and families.
The school was one of four Milwaukee Public Schools buildings this year where city health officials said students either had been or may have been poisoned by lead. No amount of lead is safe, especially for children.
The department has issued orders to address lead hazards at two schools — Golda Meir Lower Campus and Albert E. Kagel Dual Language School — but Trowbridge is the first ordered to close for such work.
Results of a lead risk assessment at Trowbridge and a fourth school, Maryland Avenue Montessori, have not yet been released. The Health Department is updating its website with documents from each school, including the assessments and orders.
Lead hazards were first identified at Golda Meir in January after a student was poisoned in the building. A 139-page report on the lead risks at Golda Meir noted chipping lead-based paint and lead dust had spread throughout four floors and common areas.
Lead-based paint was commonly used until 1978, when it was banned due to safety concerns.
The findings raised alarms for health officials about the quality of the district's ongoing maintenance and cleaning practices at buildings where the city's children spend hours every day.
Since then, the scale of the problem across MPS buildings has started to come into sharper focus.
Milwaukee schools officials last week told members of the city's Common Council that budget cuts and staffing shortages are straining the district's ability to keep up on building maintenance.
The Health Department's findings come despite an MPS Lead-Based Paint Compliance Program that requires the district to inspect and correct lead-based paint hazards every year.
Parents are encouraged to have their children tested for lead exposure.
This story will be updated.

Milwaukee Health Department warns of skin disease from unlicensed tattoo operation
The Milwaukee Health Department is investigating unlicensed tattoo operations after cases of skin disease in minors emerged. The health department said it started investigating the case after a report on May 14 from a medical provider of a case of nontuberculous mycobacteria from a tattoo procedure on a minor. The health department said they found two additional cases of minors with NTM on May 20 and June 2. The health department teamed up with the Milwaukee Police Department to find one of the suspects, according to Carly Hegarty, director of consumer environmental health for the City of Milwaukee. Citations were issued against Jonathan Beasley accusing him of giving tattoos to minors without a license. He faces $614 in fines. MPD and health officials connected Beasley to two locations associated with Davinci Way Ink. NTM is an environmental bacterium that can cause a skin infection. NTM can come from tattooing if the tattoo tools aren't properly cleaned or used in unsterile tap water used to distill the black ink, according to a health department press release. According to Hegarty, the symptoms of NTM are swelling, pain, and pus and drainage near the tattoo area. While NTM can heal in two to three months, Hegarty said anyone who believes they have NTM should get an official diagnosis and treatment from a doctor. The Milwaukee Health Department is urging medical professionals to report if they see cases of tattoo-related infections and to ask their patients about recent tattoos and where they obtained them. Investigations into other unlicensed tattoo operations are still ongoing, Hegarty said. For parents or other people interested in tattoo safety, Hegarty said there are a few signs people can look for to be safe. According to the press release, licensed tattoo artists are supposed to verify the age of the person receiving the tattoo, follow proper sanitation procedures and give detailed instructions for aftercare. Hegarty said when getting tattoos, regardless of age, it's important to advocate for yourself. 'People absolutely have the right to ask, hey, can I see your City of Milwaukee-issued license? Can I see your practitioner's license? I would say good any tattoo artist would have that readily available,' Hegarty said. Vaccine Opponent Hired by RFK Jr. Scours Official Records for Link to Autism
An antivaccine activist recently hired by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has started hunting for proof that federal officials hid evidence that inoculations cause autism, according to people familiar with the matter. David Geier, a longtime vaccine opponent hired this spring as a contractor in the health department's financial office, is seeking Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data that antivaccine activists, including Kennedy, have alleged was buried because it showed a link between vaccines and autism, the people said.

Andrew Cuomo gets heated as he wrongly insist COVID nursing home deaths were not undercounted: ‘That's the Trump line'
Ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo got heated — and raised his voice — as he faced attacks Wednesday on everything from sexual harassment accusations against him and nursing home deaths in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cuomo stood at center stage in the Democratic mayoral primary debate amid a pile up of criticism from the eight other candidates during a fiery NBC-Politico Democratic primary mayoral debate. 'No, we didn't undercount any deaths,' Cuomo loudly insisted during one particularly heated moment. The harshest attack arguably came from the Rev. Michael Blake, a former Obama administration official, who scathingly evoked the sexual harassment accusations that led to the former governor's resignation. 'The people who don't feel safe are young women, mothers and grandmothers around Andrew Cuomo,' Blake said. 'That's the greatest threat to public safety in New York City.' Cuomo, who has vehemently denied the accusations from 11 women, uncharacteristically declined to respond. Blake then seized the opportunity to send a message to to women watching the live debate. 'Everyone woman watching tonight, he was just given a chance to acknowledge the clear claims and he ignored it,' Blake said. But Cuomo didn't stay silent when speaking about coronavirus death in nursing homes. He got animated as he insisted nursing home deaths were not undercounted and also refused to say if he edited his administration's controversial report on the deaths — the lynchpin of the investigation into his time as governor by the Department of Justice. 'There was no doubt that my administration produced the report, and it did not undercount the deaths,' Cuomo eventually said but continued to defend his record. Cuomo said COVID deaths were counted where they occurred — in hospitals or nursing homes. But many of the 15,000 nursing home residents or patients died after they were gravely ill and transported to hospital. And a damning 2021 report by state Attorney General Letitia James found that New York's nursing-home death toll from COVID-19 may be more than 50% higher than Cuomo's administration initially reported. An audit in 2022 by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli also concluded the state Health Department intentionally 'misled the public' about the number of nursing home deaths from COVID-19 to help burnish Cuomo's reputation before a sexual harassment scandal forced him to resign as governor — claims he denied. 'It's very, it's very clear that's the Trump line, the MAGA line,' Cuomo claimed. The moderators continued to push the ex-gov, but he refused to answer. 'I was very aware of the report,' he said. Cuomo also dismissed a reported Justice Department probe that lied to Congress during his testimony about his handling of the pandemic. 'No, I told Congress the truth,' he said. Rivals pounced. Brad Lander, the city comptroller, accused Cuomo of 'lying' to Congress and 'grieving' nursing home families. Blake accused Cuomo of refusing to answer the questions. At least 4,000 residents died after Cuomo's administration issued a controversial March 25, 2020 mandate for nursing homes to admit 'medically stable' coronavirus patients. Critics have argued the mandate led to the deaths.
