Hale Interchange construction in Milwaukee County to begin week of May 27
Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 27 on a multi-year road construction project through the Hale Interchange in Milwaukee County. The work will take place along I-41/43/894 between Lincoln Avenue and 84th Street, according to a statement from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The project is expected to cost about $22.3 million. The work is scheduled to be completed in late 2026. Work will include: Resurfacing and patching along the interstate between Lincoln Avenue and 84th Street. Repairing multiple bridges within the Hale Interchange. Repairing the parking lot at the Hales Corners Park and Ride. Replacing guardrails and curb ramps. Upgrading signals and lights. Two-way traffic on the interstate will continue during construction, with resurfacing work taking place primarily overnight. Work on bridges will cause ramp closures for about 45 days: Starting in mid-summer, the northbound to eastbound system ramp will close. Starting in late summer, the westbound to southbound system ramp will close. At night, full closures of the freeway, lanes and ramps are expected. The Hales Corners Park and Ride lot along with the MCTS Route 55 stop will remain open for partial use. Who's winning the 2025 spring election in Wisconsin? How to find results after polls close
Wisconsin voters are casting their ballots Tuesday in a spring election which will decide the outcome of the state Supreme Court's partisan control. And while it may require some patience, you'll have to wait several hours after polls close at 8 p.m. to know the unofficial outcome of the race. This week, Milwaukee Election Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutiérrez said she wasn't sure what time the city would be done counting, but it would be after midnight. Milwaukee's absentee ballots are usually reported late at night, or even in the early morning hours after Election Day, because of the amount of absentee ballots cast by voters in the city. Last year, the Republican-controlled state Senate let a bipartisan bill die that would have made it possible for clerks to start counting absentee ballots earlier. Here's how election results are posted in Wisconsin, plus where to find live election results on after polls close. Wisconsin doesn't have a statewide system for reporting unofficial results on Election night, according to Instead, results are transmitted from municipal clerks to Wisconsin's county clerks, who are required by law to post unofficial results to their websites. You can find a list of Wisconsin county election websites here. The results reported after polls close are technically unofficial. Official results are always certified in a process after Election Day. RELATED You can track your absentee ballot in Wisconsin. Here's how Live results will be posted to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's website after polls close at 8 p.m. You can find live results here. Alison Dirr contributed to this report. Parents drop off students for final day at Trowbridge School ahead of lead-related closure
The scene outside Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies Friday had all the hallmarks of a regular school day. But even as parents and kids said goodbye around 7:35 a.m., it was clear the day was anything but. Families and staff learned Thursday evening their school would be closed indefinitely starting Monday so pressing lead hazards could be addressed. Students will be relocated to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Lifelong Learning, 1017 N. 12th St., while the work is underway. Although families were told they could contact the Trowbridge office to arrange an excused absence Friday, many still dropped their children off for their final day in the building that's well over a century old. To get inside, kids, teachers and parents passed a crowd of reporters with video cameras and microphones who had questions about lead hazards recently identified at the school. Waiting at the school's main entrance was a staff member who ushered them inside. The historic Victorian-style school is made of Milwaukee's classic cream-colored brick, and reads 1894 on its outside entrance, the year it was built. Trowbridge is the latest Milwaukee Public Schools building to raise alarms for health officials over lead hazards that pose a particular risk to the young children who spend day after day inside. The department has issued orders to address lead hazards at two schools — Golda Meir Lower Campus and Albert E. Kagel Dual Language School — but Trowbridge is the first ordered to close for such work. This story will be updated. Trowbridge School ordered to close temporarily to address lead hazards, students to relocate
The Milwaukee Health Department has ordered Trowbridge Street School of Great Lakes Studies to temporarily close starting Monday after finding 'unsafe lead dust levels' within the building, a department spokesperson confirmed Thursday night. Students will be relocated to the Wisconsin Conservatory ofLifelong Learning, 1017 N. 12th St., while work to address the lead hazards is underway, according to a letter to staff and families. The school was one of four Milwaukee Public Schools buildings this year where city health officials said students either had been or may have been poisoned by lead. No amount of lead is safe, especially for children. The department has issued orders to address lead hazards at two schools — Golda Meir Lower Campus and Albert E. Kagel Dual Language School — but Trowbridge is the first ordered to close for such work. Results of a lead risk assessment at Trowbridge and a fourth school, Maryland Avenue Montessori, have not yet been released. The Health Department is updating its website with documents from each school, including the assessments and orders. Lead hazards were first identified at Golda Meir in January after a student was poisoned in the building. A 139-page report on the lead risks at Golda Meir noted chipping lead-based paint and lead dust had spread throughout four floors and common areas. Lead-based paint was commonly used until 1978, when it was banned due to safety concerns. The findings raised alarms for health officials about the quality of the district's ongoing maintenance and cleaning practices at buildings where the city's children spend hours every day. Since then, the scale of the problem across MPS buildings has started to come into sharper focus. Milwaukee schools officials last week told members of the city's Common Council that budget cuts and staffing shortages are straining the district's ability to keep up on building maintenance. The Health Department's findings come despite an MPS Lead-Based Paint Compliance Program that requires the district to inspect and correct lead-based paint hazards every year. Parents are encouraged to have their children tested for lead exposure. This story will be updated.
