Bollywood actor Zayed Khan, son of acclaimed actor-director Sanjay Khan, recently opened up about a difficult phase in his family's life. Zayed shared that his mother is like 'God' to him and recalled how the family faced financial struggles after a fire broke out on the set of his father's show, The Sword of Tipu Sultan. He said, 'My dad had a fire accident at that time, during Tipu Sultan. There was a lot of distress at home, and the way I saw my mother and sisters during that period really hurt me deeply. The family was extremely financially burdened at that time. A lot of people had passed away in that fire, and there was no insurance at the time. I saw a lot of pain in my mother and sisters and how they took up the mantle to support my father.'
He also revealed whether the family had to make compromises in their lifestyle due to the financial burden and said, 'Like take autos, sell cars and get into taxis — yes. Our house was mortgaged, and many other things. You truly see who your friends are during times like that. We got better cars again once we came out of the situation.'
He further recalled that he had suggested his parents enrol him in a boarding school, as his mother already had a lot of people to take care of. He also remembered the sense of achievement he felt when he handed over his first paycheque from his debut film to his mother.
In 1989, Sanjay Khan was shooting for his show The Sword of Tipu Sultan when a fire broke out on set. Due to the unavailability of firefighting equipment, 52 crew members lost their lives. The 78-year-old actor-director underwent 74 surgeries after suffering third-degree burns. However, after recovering, he completed the shoot of the show.
Meanwhile, Zayed made his acting debut with Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne in 2003 but rose to fame with his role in the blockbuster Main Hoon Na alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Known for his charming screen presence, Zayed appeared in films like Dus, Shabd, Fight Club, and Yuvvraaj. However, his career soon slowed down, and he stepped away from films to focus on his family. In 2023, the actor shared plans to return to acting but did not reveal much about his comeback project.

Zayed Khan refutes rumours of affair with Esha Deol; says Aishwarya Rai knows how to play with co-stars: ‘She is so beautiful, it's like porcelain'
Zayed Khan and Esha Deol have starred in several films together, including Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne, Dus, Cash, and others. Given their frequent collaborations, rumours once swirled that the two were dating. However, in a recent interaction, Zayed rubbished all such claims, clarifying that he was in a long-term relationship with his now-wife Malaika Parekh during the time he worked with Esha. He also referred to Esha as his 'buddy for life.' Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Zayed said, 'No, I was never in a relationship with Esha Deol. We have done a lot of films together. I was always with my wife Malaika, and Esha and Malaika have always been good friends. Esha is a sweetheart, and I don't want to say anything because she got married and all. She has been a buddy for life.' Zayed also reflected on his experience of working with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the film Shabd. Calling the film ahead of its time, he said, 'Shabd was the film that showed a married woman falling in love with a young man. Strangely, all the films that I had chosen were ahead of their time. Shabd had a good story. It was a slice of life told at a time when people weren't ready for it.' Zayed further admitted to being awestruck by Aishwarya's beauty and noted how she had a strong presence around her co-stars. He explained, 'I was a fan of Aishwarya when she became Miss World. I used to have her picture in the locker room. When I heard the script of the film and learned that Aishwarya is in the film, I quickly asked where do I sign on. I had a wonderful experience working with her.' He added, 'She really knows how to play with you. There are actors who take time to come on set and there is drama and actual work is suffering, that's the worst situation to be in. But with Aishwarya, I thought it would be tough to break my fan moment, but she so naturally just said 'hi' and asked me if I want to do rehearsals first. She is so beautiful, it's like porcelain, it's not possible. Today people do filters and all, but she had a natural filter.' Zayed's career in the film industry was relatively short-lived. Despite starring in various high-profile projects, his career took a downturn after the failure of the 2009 film Blue. He was last seen on the big screen in 2015's Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene.

Zayed Khan on why Akshay Kumar-Sanjay Dutt's Rs 100-crore film Blue flopped at box office: 'Hollywood's best action directors were involved...Kylie Minogue featured...'
Zayed Khan reflects on 'Blue,' acknowledging its ambition and star power with Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, but also its failure to connect with audiences despite a massive budget. He attributes this to a disconnect between the screenplay and execution, hindering its potential as a franchise. Creative differences and storytelling issues ultimately led to its underperformance. Years after stepping away from the limelight, Zayed Khan has revisited one of his most ambitious projects—Blue. In a candid chat, the actor opened up about the film's massive scale, what it promised, and why it ultimately failed to deliver. The film also featured Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. On Siddharth Kannan's podcast, Zayed reflected on Blue as a film that was ahead of its time. He likened its concept to an early version of the Fast & Furious franchise and believed it had all the elements—slick action, high production value, and a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta , and Katrina Kaif—to turn into a successful franchise. Despite its star-studded cast and ambitious scale, Blue fell flat at the box office. The film featured Katrina Kaif in a cameo and included extensive underwater sequences, but it ultimately failed to strike a chord with audiences. He further attributed Blue's failure to a gap between the screenplay and its on-screen execution. He felt the film didn't translate the script's potential effectively, pointing out that even the most visually impressive scenes fall flat if the narrative lacks cohesion. For him, the core issue lay in the storytelling—emphasizing that impactful action stems from a strong screenplay, not just high-octane visuals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Blue was originally envisioned as the start of a franchise, with director Anthony D'Souza planning a sequel titled Aasman in 2012. However, the follow-up never took off. Zayed Khan hinted at behind-the-scenes challenges, suggesting that creative differences among team members may have played a role—though he noted such clashes are not unusual in filmmaking. Made on a then-unheard-of budget of ₹100 crore, Blue was a lavish production that spared no expense. Zayed Khan noted that the film brought in top Hollywood action directors and even featured international pop star Kylie Minogue , praising the team for delivering high production value despite the film's eventual underperformance. Zayed Khan began his acting career in 2003 with Chura Liya Hai Tumne, but it was his role in the 2004 hit Main Hoon Na alongside Shah Rukh Khan that brought him widespread recognition. Despite a strong start, his career lost momentum over time, eventually prompting him to step away from the spotlight.
