Kalinga Super Cup: FC Goa Seal Finals Berth With Win Over Mohun Bagan SG

FC Goa breezed into the Kalinga Super Cup summit clash with a crushing 3-1 win over Mohun Bagan SG, riding on second-half goals from Iker Guarrotxena and Borja Herrera on Wednesday.
The Gaurs, champions in 2019, will face the winners of the clash between Mumbai City FC and Jamshedpur FC in Saturday's final.
Goals from Brison Fernandes, Guarrotxena, and Herrera sealed a comfortable victory for Manolo Marquez's side over Bastab Roy's young guns.
In a blistering start, Goa constantly pressured Mohun Bagan's defence on the back foot, their high pressing and high-speed game leaving the Mariners' midfield constantly out of position and disjointed.
To add to that, Goa also brought unpredictability to their set-piece routines, and in the 20th minute, Fernandes capitalised on one to score the opener.
From an improvised corner routine, Herrera curled a perfect cross into the danger zone, for Brison to slightly glance into the far corner.
Goa's lead didn't last too long, and Mohun Bagan were level within two minutes.
Ashique Kuruniyan picked up a pass on the byline and, with a devastating turn of pace and skill, left the marking defender Boris Singh in his wake before unleashing a low fizzing cross into the six-yard area.
Suhail Bhat merely had to tap it in to create a carbon copy of his quarter-final goal against Kerala Blasters.
The Gaurs came out with more energy, desire, and verve in the second half, and within a minute, Brison's driving midfield run and pass split the midfield, delivering a perfect opportunity for Dejan Drazic on the left side of the box.
The Serbian pulled his shot wide. Mohun Bagan's defence had gone absent, and it portended things to come.
In the 50th, while running to a long ball in the same channel, an unmarked Drazic was brought down by a reckless Dheeraj Singh challenge.
The referee duly pointed to the spot, and Guarrotxena made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to score.
Dheeraj's evening got worse seven minutes later, when he was badly caught under a Herrera corner, which flew over him and straight into the net.
The Spaniard had threatened constantly with his curling corners and on this occasion found the perfect blend of curl and flight to outwit the goalkeeper.
The Mariners looked out of it, and yet they had a chance to reduce the deficit and create a fight when Salahudheen ran clear from a Nuno Reis long ball, controlled it, went around the goalkeeper, and found himself facing an open net.
He took a touch too many and pulled the trigger too late, allowing Goa's scrambling defence to issue a heroic block on the line.

LONDON (Reuters) -The racing scenes in Brad Pitt's new F1 movie are impressively authentic but the filmmakers have also made much of how the sport's past is woven into the plot -- with a hefty slice of Hollywood artistic licence. "We just drew from history. A little this, a little that, then we had Lewis Hamilton keep us straight," commented Pitt at a New York premiere ahead of this week's general release in cinemas. Apple's senior vice-president of services Eddy Cue, a lifelong Formula One fan and Ferrari board member, told reporters after a media screening that "there's not a single event in here... that hasn't happened in a real race." That does not mean, of course, that such events could still happen now or that they served as anything more than inspiration. The Apple Original Films blockbuster -- with scenes shot during grand prix weekends -- is a redemption story, with Pitt playing ageing driver Sonny Hayes on an unlikely comeback alongside a young hotshot at a struggling team. Seven-times world champion Hamilton provided advice and is credited as a co-producer on a movie scripted for audiences unfamiliar with the sport. Pitt's age -- 61 in real life -- has been called out as unrealistic for a driver in the modern era but as Hamilton, 40, said when filming started in 2023: "Brad looks like he's ageing backwards." The oldest current F1 driver is Spaniard Fernando Alonso who will be 44 next month but in the 1950s, when physical demands were less but dangers greater, Philippe Etancelin and Louis Chiron raced at 55. Button made five pitstops, plus a drive-through penalty, and picked up a puncture in a race halted for two hours. Hayes' backstory is of racing Ayrton Senna before suffering a crash so violent he was flung from the car still attached to his seat. That is modelled on Northern Ireland's Martin Donnelly who crashed at Jerez in practice for the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix and was left inert in the middle of the track. He survived, miraculously, but there was to be no F1 comeback. Drivers have escaped blazing crashes, Frenchman Romain Grosjean after his car erupted in a fireball at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix while Niki Lauda suffered serious burns in a 1976 Nuerburgring crash. The Austrian returned to racing six weeks later. There are nods to the Crashgate scandal, when Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr crashed deliberately at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix and triggered a safety car that helped teammate Alonso win. A female technical director? Not yet, but women have run teams and work as strategists, race engineers and pitlane mechanics -- although the movie is far from realistic in that regard. For F1 fans of a certain age there is the 'Easter egg' of a glimpse of the Monza banking in homage to 1966 movie 'Grand Prix'. F1 director Joseph Kosinski said that classic, and Steve McQueen's 1971 movie 'Le Mans', were his touchstones. "Those movies are now almost 60 years old but you can still watch them and still marvel at the cinematography and the feeling of being there," he said. 'There was some hesitancy due to the prevalent situation in Indian football, but regardless of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League (ISL), these two players were always going to be a part of the squad. They know the club, the league and the conditions in India. It wasn't a difficult decision.' Borja and Guarrotxena were important members of Manolo Marquez's squad last season. Besides striker Armando Sadiku in the early stages of the league, the coach relied heavily on the two players to get the goals, both in the ISL and Super Cup, which Goa won to qualify for continental championships for the first time since 2020. Borja had six goals and four assists in the ISL last season with his hat-trick against his former club, East Bengal, the highlight. He started in 16 of the 22 games that he featured in the league. The Spanish midfielder's big goal contribution though came in the Super Cup when his brilliant brace slayed Jamshedpur FC in the final. Borja also had a significant role to play in Goa's Bandodkar Memorial Trophy triumph earlier in the season. Nursing a long-term injury, Guarrotxena missed the early part of the season but his importance to Goa cannot be understated. Just like Borja, he had 10-goal contributions in the ISL, scoring seven. The Spaniard – now into his second stint at the club – made 21 appearances overall and accumulated 1,411 minutes of playing time. This season's ISL was expected to kick off on Sept 14, as per the calendar approved by the AIFF League Committee last month. However, there is now growing suspense over the future of the league after several club owners were told by FSDL that the league will not kick off, unless there's clarity on the Master Rights Agreement (MRA). FSDL, a joint venture between Reliance and Star which runs the league, are commercial partners of AIFF, with whom they signed a 15-year MRA in 2010. The agreement ends in December this year. Several meetings have been held between FSDL and AIFF over renewal of the agreement. Rather than an all-cash deal that gave the marketing partners rights to all federation properties, they have now suggested formation of a new holding company that governs, operates, commercialises and funds ISL, with clubs (60%, equal across all clubs), FSDL (26%) and AIFF (14%) as the shareholders.
