Harrison Ford, 83, reveals real reason why he will never retire
Hollywood legend Harrison Ford says he has no plans to retire — even suggesting he chose the acting profession for that very reason.
'No. That's one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor, was that they need old people, too, to play old people's parts,' the Star Wars actor, 83, said in a new interview.
Harrison is celebrating more success and another accolade ticked off and his new chat came a few months after he pulled out of the Oscars due to illness.
After decades of making great work playing the likes of Han Solo in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, he finally got his first Emmy nomination this year, for the AppleTV+ show 'Shrinking,' where he plays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a therapist who has Parkinson's disease.
He modestly told Variety magazine: 'I don't think there's anything competitive about creativity, and I don't understand the need to compare and contrast one person's work to another's. If you like it, you like it; if you don't like it, look at something else. I'm grateful, but I would have done what I did — and I'll do what I'm doing — regardless of whether it's deemed worthy of mention or not. Because it's what I do. It's what I love doing. I love telling stories. I love pretending to be somebody else.'
He had been working with Michael J. Fox in Season 3 which just finished filming, and Harrison's character, Paul, has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. Ford says that it was "essential" to talk to Fox as Paul continues to deal with his disease.
'Michael's courage, his fortitude and his grace, more than anything else, is on full display. He's a very smart, very brave, noble, generous, passionate guy, and an example to all of us, whether we're facing Parkinson's or not. You cannot help but recognise how amazing it is to have such grace. So he gives me both a physical representation of the disease to inform myself with, but more than that, he allows me to believe that Paul could believe that he could be adequate to the challenge. The truth is that we can't be fucking around with this just to make a joke or anything. Parkinson's is not funny. And I want to get it right. It's necessary to be correct with what we do in respect of the challenge that Parkinson's represents, and that we don't use it for its entertainment value.'
Ford has overcome his own difficulties which have affected his acting, crashing his plane on a golf course in 2015 in an accident which was described as near-fatal, in March 2015.
Harrison said: 'Did it have an impact? I suppose it did. I've been through a couple of big accidents that took a while to heal from. This is not something dismissed lightly, but s**t happens; it was a mechanical issue that was judged to be beyond my control. If I'd been at fault, I would have taken another direction. But I don't think it informs my life on a day-to-day basis now that I've recovered sufficiently from the physical effects.'
Harrison also spoke about how America has changed and seems less 'banal and safe' with Trump in charge.
He said: 'The pendulum doth swing in both directions, and it's on a healthy swing to the right at the moment. And, as nature dictates, it will swing back.
But currently the issue is not who we are, but that we're not who we used to be because we've been purposefully disaggregated into serviceable political units. And that has caused the middle to become frayed and tenuous, and the middle is where we belong. Not because it's banal and safe, but because it's fair. Compromise is fair and honest.
'In politics and in life, you don't always get what you want, but you get what you get and you don't get upset. They teach us that in kindergarten, but they also teach you to fight for what you think is right.
Now, because we've been disaggregated in this way, we're having a hard time finding commonality. But if you look at the economy, you'll figure out where the commonality is — it's where it always was: Rich get richer, and poor get poorer. And that ain't exactly right.'

Loni Anderson, star of 1980s sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, dies aged 79
Loni Anderson, who played a struggling radio station's empowered receptionist on the hit TV comedy WKRP in Cincinnati, died on Sunday, just days before her 80th birthday. Anderson died at a Los Angeles hospital following a 'prolonged' illness, said her longtime publicist, Cheryl J Kagan. 'We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,' Anderson's family said in a statement. WKRP in Cincinnati aired from 1978-1982 and was set in a flagging Ohio radio station trying to reinvent itself with rock music. The cast included Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner and Jan Smithers, alongside Anderson as the sexy and smart Jennifer Marlowe. As the station's receptionist, the blond and high-heeled Jennifer used her sex appeal to deflect unwanted business calls for her boss, Mr Carlson. Her efficiency often kept the station running in the face of others' incompetence. The role earned Anderson two Emmy award nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. Anderson starred on the big screen alongside Burt Reynolds in the 1983 comedy Stroker Ace and the two later married and became tabloid fixtures before divorcing in 1994. Anderson wrote a 1995 autobiography, My Life in High Heels, which she said was about 'the growth of a woman, a woman who survives. It's about my childhood, the death of my parents, my career, my divorces, and my children. Then of course, the trauma of my marriage to Burt.' 'I think if you're going to write about yourself, you have to do it warts and all,' Anderson told the Associated Press. 'You may not even tell the nicest things about yourself, because you're telling the truth.' Anderson is survived by her husband Bob Flick, daughter Deidra and son-in law Charlie Hoffman, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, grandchildren McKenzie and Megan Hoffman, stepson Adam Flick and his wife Helene, and step-grandchildren Felix and Maximilian.

Where all the forgotten Love Island finalists are now after they failed to cling onto fame and fortune after ITV2 show
Find out what happened to some of Love Island's most famous faces rocky roads Where all the forgotten Love Island finalists are now after they failed to cling onto fame and fortune after ITV2 show Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WHILST reaching the Love Island final might seem like a golden ticket to fame and fortune and an endless career in the spotlight, things don't always go quite to plan for the Islanders. Despite most of the show's finalists going on to enjoy successful careers, including some as A-listers and multi-millionaires, for an unlucky few, they plunged back into obscurity just months after their time in the spotlight. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 8 These stars all reached the final of Love Island but quickly disappeared from fame Credit: Rex Features 8 But what came to be of the once fan favourites? Credit: Rex Whilst many dream of the seven-figure deals that roll in for icons including Molly-Mae Hague, Ekin-Su and Maura Higgins - a handful of Islanders haven't been so fortunate. As another four couples head into this Monday's Love Island final, will they be set for life or will one or two of them fall victim to the curse of disappearing from relevancy like these stars. The Sun has compiled a list of the famous finalists who failed to strike it big and make an impact after their summer of love in the spotlight. Paul Knops 8 Hunky Paul came second behind Dani Dyer but soon faded out of the limelight Hunky model Paul was already well on the way to making a name for himself after becoming one of the world's most in-demand male models. He was even chosen to be Britney Spears' love interest for her racy 2016 music video, Make Me..., which saw him getting hot and heavy with the star. So when Paul strutted into the Love Island villa as a late entrant in 2018, it seemed like a no-brainer that he was on track to become a top star. Paul coupled up with fan favourite Laura Anderson after her split from Wes Nelson. Laura and Paul ended up making it all the way to second place - just behind Dani Dyer and Jack Fincham. But the pair quickly split up after Majorca and whilst Laura remained in the headlines and on TV screens, Paul's star faded just as quick as his time in the villa. Whilst his looks haven't faded, it seems the handsome fella prefers living a quieter life away from the hustle and bustle of influencer life. Love Island exes Laura Anderson and Paul Knops agree to move on in Christmas Reunion heart-to-heart Paul still models and his Instagram shows him picture perfect at all times with his new long-haired locks. Lana Jenkins 8 Lana failed to follow in the footsteps of the ladies who came before her When blonde stunner Lana was revealed to be an Islander on series nine of the show in 2023, she seemed like a ready made celebrity. She quickly found herself besotted with partner Ron Hall and they managed to make it all the way to second place in the villa. But despite Lana aligning herself with the same team behind Olivia Attwood, she failed to make a dent in the entertainment industry after her time on the show. Despite the expectation of big brand deals, Lana's commercial work was limited and it wasn't long until her romance with co-star Ron also crumbled at the same time her career stalled. Although she failed to hit the big time, Lana still boasts 500,000 fans on Instagram and shows off glam snaps from her plush travels around the world. She also runs her own home Instagram account to show off her passion for interior design. Josh Oyinsan 8 Hunky Josh's career hasn't taken off 12 months on from the villa Despite only winning the show last summer alongside then-partner, Mimii Ngulube, Josh struggled to translate his win into a long-lasting media career. When Josh and Mimii quickly split following their win, interest in the couple wavered and Josh failed to land any major gigs despite being crowned a champion. Whilst Josh has managed to land a number of paid partnerships on Instagram after the show, it pales in comparison to some of the brand deals landed by his counterparts. His passion for wellness and advocating for the mental health of young athletes has been commendable however and earned him a legion of support. Ched Uzor 8 Ched focused on fitness instead of fame Series six Islander Ched was another star whose place in the final did not guarantee a lengthy career afterwards. He found himself in a relationship with Jess Gale and the loveable pair managed to make it to fourth place on the programme. But their love did not prevail and they called it quits shortly after the show. Ched then found his own career disrupted by the Covid pandemic and he failed to land any big-money gigs. However, despite turning his back on fame, Ched has managed to carve out an online fitness business. Known for his impressive figure and muscly body, Ched has put this to use by helping his followers get in shape and achieve a dream body like his. Titled Shred with Ched, he has launched the app to become an instant personal trainer to people up and down the country. Some of the services that Ched offers includes one-to-one coaching as well as personally curated nutrition and workout plans for each client. Tanya Manhenga 8 Tanya now hosts nightclub parties after Love Island Like her co-star Lana, Tanya hoped that her time on series nine of Love Island would turn her into a money-spinning star. However, the reality was very different. After finishing in fourth place with then-boyfriend, Shaq Muhammad, Tanya struggled to replicate the success of the ladies who came before her after failing to couple up with a big-money fashion brand. These days, Tanya is living a single life after splitting with Shaq and enjoys a jet-setting lifestyle. Helping her travelling habit is her latest venture titled Grooves with TT. It is Tanya's own touring club night featuring exclusively Amapiano music. The star held her first club night in Manchester earlier this year with plans for an event in London next month before taking it across Europe. She also kept her post-villa income topped up with her own wig business, called Tay Slay Wigs. Lauren Richardson 8 Lauren has quit fame altogether and works as a PE teacher Lauren managed to make it all the way to the final of Love Island back in 2015. Despite being coupled up with Josh Ritchie, that didn't help her when it came to securing a top career. Whilst Josh has been a TV regular and shot to even greater fame thanks to his romance with Charlotte Crosby, Lauren quickly faded into obscurity. Heavily tattooed Lauren is worlds away from the typical Islander, with her Instagram feed showing a much more demure and laid-back life in comparison to the glitz and glam of the usual crop of ITV2 stars. Lauren hasn't updated her feed since 2021 and chooses to keep her life out of the spotlight. Exactly a decade from her time in the Majorcan villa, Lauren has shunned fame and now works as a PE teacher and nutritionist.

Vanessa Redgrave, 88, hailed as ‘national treasure' after rare appearance
Vanessa Redgrave has been praised for turning up to a protest addressing the ongoing starvation crisis in Gaza. In recent weeks there has been increased international attention on the suffering of civilians in Gaza, with photos of starving Palestinians, including babies, emerging. With aid agencies issuing stark warnings about the desperate situation on the ground, there's been a public outcry for intervention in the conflict, which is about to enter its third year. Although Israel has denied any responsibility for what experts have now called a famine, it controls the flow of all aid into the enclave and has been blamed by agencies, including Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam International, for 'restrictions, delays and fragmentation' for 'chaos, starvation and death'. Over the weekend, more protests occurred across the world calling for action, including in London, where Redgrave, a long-time supporter of Palestine, was spotted. On Friday evening the Pots and pans for Palestine protest was held at the Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, with attendees asked to 'bang pots and pans to echo the hunger faced by Palestinians trapped under blockade'. The demonstration – organised by Lambeth and Southwark for Palestine and West Norwood 4 Palestine – was part of a UK-wide day of action, with the acclaimed actress photographed taking part. Photos taken at the event show the 88-year-old in a wheelchair holding a spoon and pan. Sharing it on social media, photographer Misan Harriman wrote: 'I burst into tears when I saw this image of our national treasure, Vanessa Redgrave, still fighting for us to recognise the humanity of Palestinians 46 years after her Oscars speech. She has endured so much for this cause, but she still shows her solidarity in London today! 'Unfiltered humanity, perseverance, and empathy in one soul. 'Thank you sincerely, Vanessa; you are a real one!' he added, also tagging her daughter Joely Richardson. 'Oh!!!! THIS is phenomenal!!!!!!!' Annie Lennox commented. 'Stunning! Thank you Vanessa,' Paloma Faith wrote. 'She is an amazing human being,' Rosie O'Donnell added. Many others praised Redgrave's long-standing activism and 'moral backbone to speak truth to power'. In 1977, Redgrave produced and starred in a controversial documentary film, The Palestinian, about the activities of the Palestine Liberation Organization. She funded the film by selling her house, but faced fierce backlash from some, with one screening of the film even being hit by a bomb. The following year Redgrave, whose career has spanned six decades and seen her win an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards and an Olivier Award, won the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role for her part in the drama Julia. After she paid tribute to the film's writer, she ended her speech with a message directed to the Palestinian people: 'And I salute you, and I pay tribute to you, and I think you should be very proud that in the last few weeks you've stood firm, and you have refused to be intimidated by the threats of a small bunch of Zionist hoodlums. 'I salute you and I thank you and I pledge to you that I will continue to fight against anti-Semitism and fascism.' More Trending Redgrave had been referring to the extremists of the Jewish Defense League who had offered a bounty to have her killed. Throughout her career Vanessa has also participated in anti-Vietnam War protests, served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, launched the Peace and Progress Party and in 2017 made her directorial debut with the movie Sea Sorrow, a documentary about the European migrant crisis and the plight of migrants encamped outside Calais, France, trying to reach Britain. In 2018 she told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I had to do my bit. Everybody had to do their bit, to try and change things for the better. To advocate for what's right and not be dismayed if immediately you don't see results.' Got a story?
