
Police calendar's one day for women… two months for trans
The list of key days - which also includes Asexuality Day and Lesbian Visibility Day - was shared with officers and staff allowing them to 'seek further information on them if they wish'.
Last Wednesday saw International Drag Day and Monday last week was Non-Binary People's Day – while International Pronouns Day is on October 20.
Not all of the dates are 'marked nationally by the organisation' - but officers and civilian staff can request more detail about them, potentially allowing them to request permission to mark specific dates in the workplace.
Last night Dr Kath Murray, of gender-critical think-tank Murray Blackburn Mackenzie, said: 'Police Scotland's 'inclusion' calendar celebrates just one day for women, compared to two months for transgender causes.
'The force also signposts days celebrating drag queens, pronouns, and fringe gender identities.
'It has no formal representation for women, nor does it recognise the [gender-critical] Police SEEN network.'
The calendar opens with LGBT History Month in February, with Purple Friday marked as the last Friday in February, a day when people can show their solidarity with LGBTIQ+ people by wearing the colour purple.
Transgender Day of Visibility is on March 31, with Asexuality Day on April 6 and Lesbian Visibility Day on April 26.
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is on May 17, while Pansexual Visibility Day is on May 24.
Pansexuality is defined as a sexual orientation characterised by attraction to people regardless of their gender identity.
Transgender Awareness Week runs from November 13-19, while Transgender Day of Remembrance is on November 20.
The row follows Police Scotland's decision not to allow officers in uniform to take part in a Pride march in Glasgow on Saturday.
It came after a High Court judgment south of the Border last week which found this was a breach of impartiality, following a judicial review.
Last month Police Scotland was accused of promoting trans ideology by putting up virtue-signalling gender posters in a station.
The placards explain the words and phrases by going through each letter of the alphabet - for example 'G' is for 'gender identity'.
Police Scotland has also been criticised over delays in implementing a separate Supreme Court judgment in April which stated that the words 'woman' and 'sex' in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.
Last year Chief Constable Jo Farrell said the public and MSPs should be 'assured' that a man who commits rape or serious sexual assault will always be recorded as male.
In March, the Mail revealed that this stance, which campaigners said was a major policy U-turn, was not communicated to officers, sparking claims that police may have misled parliament.
And last week the Mail revealed that no one will face action over a 'deeply offensive' police document which compared gender-critical feminists to Nazis.
Police Scotland was at the centre of a row in May after staff were told the concept of 'gender binary' - the belief there are only two genders - was a 'key feature' of the Nazis' ideology.
The document was posted on the force's intranet by a serving constable who did not need authorisation to do so at the time.
Last night Scottish Tory equalities spokesman Tess White said: 'Hard-working Scots expect Police Scotland to be focused on tackling crime, not a woke inclusion calendar.
'It's just common sense that keeping people safe should be the top priority for the force.'
Commenting further on the calendar row, Dr Murray said: 'There are serious questions here as to whether Police Scotland would pass the impartiality test set out in the judgment against the Chief Constable of Northumbria Police issued this week, in relation to its participation in a Pride march.'
A Police Scotland spokesman said: 'These dates are part of Police Scotland's inclusion calendar and, while not all are marked nationally by the organisation, listing them allows colleagues to seek further information on them if they wish.'

Woman raped by her foster father awarded over €300,000 in damages by court
A man who admitted to repeatedly raping his foster daughter over a seven-year period must pay over €300,000 in damages to her, a High Court judge has ruled. Stephen Murray, formerly of Humphreystown, Vallymount, Co Wicklow, was jailed for 11 years in 2022 after pleading guilty to multiple counts of rape, oral rape and sexual assault of Kelly Kemmy. Advertisement The offending occurred between February 2009 and December 2015, when Ms Kemmy was aged between 11 and 18 years old. Ms Kemmy (27), who waived her right to anonymity following Murray's sentencing, subsequently issued civil proceedings against Murray and Tusla, who had placed her in her abuser's care. Ms Kemmy's claim against Tusla, which sought damages for negligence for placing her in the care of Murray, was later settled for €250,000. In February 2024, Mr Justice Paul Coffey ruled in favour of Ms Kemmy in her claim against Murray, which sought damages for personal injuries, and rape, sexual assault, assault, battery, false imprisonment and trespass to the person. Advertisement Murray did not participate in the proceedings, and judgment was made against him in default of appearance. In a judgment handed down on Wednesday, Ms Justice Emily Egan ruled Ms Kemmy should receive damages of €328,000 from Murray. Ms Justice Egan, who characterised the nature and severity of abuse suffered by Ms Kemmy as a 'worst case scenario', said Ms Kemmy should be awarded €578,000 in general and special damages arising from her action against Murray. However, the judge ruled that Tusla and Murray were 'concurrent wrongdoers' in the case, and as such, the €250,000 settlement with Tusla should be deducted from the total award. Advertisement '[Ms Kemmy] suffered damage as a result of the tortious and criminal actions of Murray and that damage was not prevented, interrupted or ameliorated by Tusla, as it ought to have been,' the judge said. An award of €450,000 in general damages reflects 'the nature, severity, timing and duration of abuse and the severity of the injury' toMs Kemmy, Ms Justice Egan said. This award is greater than damages previously awarded for other child sexual abuse cases, the judge said. The judge noted the current upper limit for awards of general damages in personal injuries cases is €550,000. The €128,000 awarded in special damages arises primarily from Ms Kemmy's claims of loss of earnings. Advertisement Referring to Ms Kemmy's evidence in the civil case, Ms Justice Egan noted that it is estimated she suffered hundreds of separate incidents of rape, occurring three to four times a week. Murray's abuse of Ms Kemmy began when she was 11 years old, some seven years after she and two of her siblings were fostered by Murray and his wife. 'For years, [Ms Kemmy's] dignity and autonomy were taken from her, causing her to suffer humiliation, frustration, helplessness, loneliness and despair,' the judge said. It was Ms Kemmy's evidence that Murray told her the abuse was normal but secret, and if she told anyone, 'it would ruin the family', the judge noted. Advertisement Ms Kemmy said she felt trapped, helpless and frightened, and that her shame was so overwhelming she felt she had no one to turn to for help, the judge said. Ms Kemmy reported Murray's abuse to An Garda Síochána in July 2019. After this, she was rendered effectively homeless, and her relationship with her two siblings was 'devastated', the judge noted. Murray would later plead guilty to 14 counts of rape, two counts of oral rape and one count of sexual assault. Ms Kemmy continues to suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder, the judge noted. The judge also said Ms Kenny is a resourceful and intelligent woman, keen to gain security for herself and her young child, and who has ambitions of becoming a social worker.

Rapist who held axe to victim's throat jailed for seven years

Police not ready for summer of unrest
Police have said that they are not ready for a summer of unrest as they warn they will have to divert officers away from neighbourhood duties to tackle protests over migrants. After days of protests against mass migration outside asylum hotels, and with more planned in the coming weeks, there are fears the UK could be heading for another summer of violent disorder. Writing for The Telegraph, below, Tiff Lynch, the head of the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said officers were being 'pulled in every direction' and commanders were 'forced to choose between keeping the peace at home or plugging national gaps'. Unrest in Epping was a 'signal flare' for more to come, she said. The federation said that already-underfunded police forces would be forced to take officers away from neighbourhood policing duties to manage anti-migrant protests that turned violent. Official figures released by the Home Office show that the number of bobbies on the beat has already fallen to a record low. The number of officers in local policing has dropped from a peak of 67,785 in 2023 to 58,002 in 2025, according to the data. It comes after Essex Police came under fire for escorting anti-racism protesters to the Bell Hotel in Epping, where violence subsequently broke out. The force later took some of the anti-racism protesters away in police vans as they were 'clearly at risk of being hurt'. Demonstrations had taken place outside the hotel after a migrant, who has since been arrested, allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage girl just days after arriving in the UK. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, claimed the Essex force had 'directly facilitated the unrest we saw' and added: 'Heads must roll.' Ms Lynch said that if violent protests spread throughout the summer, it would be 'dangerous to assume' officers would be able to 'hold the line indefinitely'. She said: 'It would be comical if it weren't so serious – and so familiar. Local commanders are once again being forced to choose between keeping the peace at home or plugging national gaps.' The rioting that broke out in the wake of the Southport killings last year had 'exposed the deep fragility within our public order policing system', she said, adding: 'The gaps were plain to see: mutual aid stripped to the bone, co-ordination between forces lacking, and a total failure to anticipate how disorder is now sparked and fuelled online. 'Officers were left to face missiles with little more than a shield and a short briefing. The risks were there in black and white – yet little has improved since.' Ben-Julian Harrington, the Chief Constable of Essex Police, refused to resign over his handling of the protests and denied his officers had given a higher level of protection to anti-racism activists. Residents, who were protesting peacefully, said violence had been made inevitable by the decision to escort counter-protesters towards the hotel. Mr Harrington insisted that the only protection that officers were providing was to 'lawful and law-abiding people'. He argued that the 'irresponsible and criminal behaviour' of a minority of people at the protests was drawing officers in Essex away from investigating other crimes. Demonstrations outside hotels housing migrants have taken place in Norfolk and London in recent days, with more planned in other cities, including Bournemouth and Southampton, over the coming weeks. Tommy Robinson, the far-Right activist, called for his supporters to attend another demonstration outside a hotel in Norwich this week, stating that 'local communities have had enough'. Officers 'pulled in every direction' Ms Lynch said: 'Public order requires planning, investment and leadership. But officers are being pulled in every direction, asked to do more with less, and left in the dark about their future – all while being quietly sacrificed for short-term convenience. 'They will turn up. They always do. But it is dangerous to assume that they can continue to hold the line indefinitely, without the support they need or the recognition they deserve. 'A summer of further unrest is not inevitable. But it becomes far more likely if we once again fail to prepare.' The federation said that police pay had fallen by more than 20 per cent in real terms since 2010, but Ms Lynch added that 'this goes far beyond pay'. 'This is about whether the country still values the men and women who step forward when everything else breaks down. Right now, many of them feel utterly abandoned', she said. Labour is aiming to put 3,000 more bobbies on the beat by next spring and has pledged that every community will have dedicated teams that will spend their time in the community. From this month, all forces will be expected to guarantee police patrols in town centres and other 'hotspot' areas at peak times, such as Friday and Saturday nights in town centres or market days in rural communities. Writing for The Telegraph, Mr Farage said that counter-protest groups such as Stand Up To Racism had been given the 'red carpet treatment'. 'There's no doubt in my mind that, through their actions, Essex Police directly facilitated the unrest we saw', he added. Instead of strengthening our front line, we are continuing to sap its energy. More than 1,500 officers have been pulled from local forces to police a private visit by the US president. This was not a state occasion; it was a leisure trip. While he plays golf, communities hundreds of miles away are left without coverage, and already exhausted public order units are stretched even further. It would be comical if it weren't so serious – and so familiar. Local commanders are once again being forced to choose between keeping the peace at home or plugging national gaps. Meanwhile, anger is building. Every other public sector profession – from NHS staff to teachers and the Armed Forces – has had its annual pay award confirmed. Police officers, alone, are still waiting. With just weeks before the new pay period begins, there has been nothing but silence. It's hard not to see that delay as calculated; an attempt to avoid fuelling discontent in a workforce already under strain. If that's the plan, it is both cynical and dangerous. Officers don't need a message of reassurance. They need action and respect. Through our Copped Enough campaign, we hear from officers who are at breaking point. Working relentless overtime, not as a choice but as an expectation. Taking second jobs to keep up with rising costs. Watching friends and colleagues walk away because the personal toll has become too great. Behind each uniform is a person, someone with a family, responsibilities, and limits. When officers are stretched to breaking point, the effects ripple far beyond the front line. It impacts home lives, mental health and long-term wellbeing. These are not just statistics or headlines. These are real people carrying the weight of a system in crisis. This goes far beyond pay. This is about whether the country still values the men and women who step forward when everything else breaks down. Right now, many of them feel utterly abandoned. Policing cannot function on goodwill alone. Public order requires planning, investment and leadership. But officers are being pulled in every direction, asked to do more with less, and left in the dark about their future – all while being quietly sacrificed for short-term convenience. They will turn up. They always do. But it is dangerous to assume that they can continue to hold the line indefinitely, without the support they need or the recognition they deserve. A summer of further unrest is not inevitable. But it becomes far more likely if we once again fail to prepare.
