BJP-led Delhi govt moves SC to withdraw seven cases filed by previous AAP regime challenging LG's role
New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The BJP-led Delhi Government has approached the Supreme Court seeking to withdraw seven petitions filed during the tenure of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime challenging the constitutional authority and role of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) in various government bodies and decisions.
Appearing before a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati informed the court that the Delhi Government now seeks to withdraw all seven pending cases.
'These matters should not trouble this Court anymore,' submitted ASG Bhati while requesting the court to take the withdrawal request on record.
Responding to the submission, the Supreme Court bench directed the matter to be listed on Friday for further consideration.
One of the seven cases included in the withdrawal plea relates to the Supreme Court's earlier stay on the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) direction that had appointed the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi as the Chairman of a High-Level Committee constituted for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River.
The AAP government, under whose tenure the appeal was filed, had challenged this appointment under Section 22 of the NGT Act, contending that the order violated the constitutional scheme governing Delhi's administration.
It argued that the LG is only a constitutional figurehead, with real executive power limited to three subjects: police, public order, and land and therefore, the NGT's decision undermined the elected government's authority.
The Supreme Court will now consider the BJP-led government's request to formally withdraw the cases on the next scheduled hearing.

PM Modi announces additional aid for families hit by cross-border shelling
Katra (J&K), June 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced additional financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for families whose houses were severely damaged due to cross-border shelling from Pakistan. Addressing a public gathering here, the Prime Minister stated that households suffering severe damage due to cross-border firing will now receive Rs 2 lakh, while those with partially damaged homes will be granted Rs 1 lakh. This assistance is in addition to the support already provided earlier by the government, an official statement said. He emphasised the government's commitment to the well-being of those affected, noting that families who lost loved ones in the shelling have already received appointment letters for government aid. Recognising the hardship faced by over 2,000 families impacted by the shelling, PM Modi reaffirmed the government's solidarity with the victims, saying, 'Their pain is the nation's pain.' Stating that the government recognises border residents as the nation's frontline protectors, Modi said, 'Over the past decade, unprecedented efforts have been made to strengthen development and security in border districts'. Highlighting key initiatives, Modi said that approximately 10,000 new bunkers have been constructed, which played a critical role in safeguarding lives during the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. He also announced the formation of two new border battalions for the Jammu and Kashmir division, further enhancing security operations in the region. Additionally, he said two dedicated women battalions have also been successfully established, reinforcing defence capabilities and empowering women in the armed forces. Emphasising the significant infrastructure development taking place in India's international border regions, particularly in challenging terrains, the Prime Minister announced that hundreds of crores are being invested to improve connectivity and security. 'The Kathua-Jammu Highway is being upgraded into a six-lane expressway, while the Akhnoor-Poonch Highway is undergoing widening to facilitate smoother travel. Under the Vibrant Village Programme, development initiatives in border villages have been accelerated, ensuring better living conditions and opportunities for residents,' the Prime Minister said. He mentioned that 400 villages in Jammu and Kashmir, previously lacking all-weather connectivity, are now being linked with 1,800 km of newly constructed roads. He announced allocation of over Rs 4,200 crore for these infrastructure projects, reinforcing economic growth and regional development in border areas. No permission granted for holding Eid prayers at Eidgah: Anjuman
Srinagar, June 6 (UNI) Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the managing committee of the mosque affairs on Friday said that the authorities did not grant permission for holding the Eid prayers at the Eidgah congregational ground in Srinagar. Eid-ul-Adha is being celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and it is one of the two major Muslim festivals. On Thursday Anjuman had sought clarity from authorities on allowing Eid-ul-Adha prayers at Eidgah. 'The Anjuman deeply regrets that authorities once again did not grant permission for holding the Eid congregation at the Eidgah Srinagar, in keeping with the longstanding Islamic tradition and the collective religious sentiment of the people,' the statement issued by the religious body said. Anjuman announced that the Eid-ul-Adha congregation will be held at the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar tomorrow at 9:30 am. Prior to the congregational prayers, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq will deliver the Eid sermon from 8:30 am, in which he will speak on the philosophy and spirit of Eid and Qurbani (sacrifice). Auqaf has urged all worshippers to attend the Eid prayers at Jama Masjid in large numbers. Earlier this year, Eid-ul-Fitr prayers were not allowed at the historical Jamia Masjid and Eidgah at the old city Srinagar. Since abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, Eid prayers have not been allowed at the Eidgah for fear of law and order problems. UNI MJR PRS
