Reddit is down — live updates on ongoing outage
Starting around 11:30 a.m. Pacific, the popular social platform Reddit appeared to begin having problems.
On the tracking site, Down Detector, suddenly over 25,000 reports streamed in.
On the website, scrolling stops quickly, and you get a server error message. However, the current Reddit status page lists everything as green, meaning it's okay. We'll see how long it takes that to change.

X changes its terms to bar training of AI models using its content
Social network X has changed its developer agreement to prevent third parties from using the platform's content to train large language models. In an update on Wednesday, the company added a line under 'Reverse Engineering and other Restrictions,' a subsection of restrictions on use: 'You shall not and you shall not attempt to (or allow others to) […] use the X API or X Content to fine-tune or train a foundation or frontier model,' it reads. This change comes after Elon Musk's AI company xAI acquired X in March — understandably, xAI wouldn't want to give its competitors free access to the social platform's data without a sale agreement. In 2023, X changed its privacy policy to use public data on its site to train AI models. Last October, it made further changes to allow third parties to train their models. Reddit has also put in place safeguards against AI crawlers, and last month, The Browser Company added a similar clause to its AI-focused browser Dia's terms of use.

Google Messages' Material 3 Expressive revamp is reaching more users

The beta release brings design changes for the app's homepage, chat interface, settings menu, and more. Although Android 16 has yet to hit the stable channel, Google has already started updating its apps in line with its new Material 3 Expressive design language. After releasing a few redesigned UI elements in Gmail, Google Messages, and Google Photos to select users over the last few days, the company has now started rolling out the Google Messages redesign to more users on the beta channel, and it isn't limited to the revamped chat interface. User reports on Reddit and Telegram reveal that Material 3 Design changes for Google Messages' homepage and search, chat interface, New chat screen, and settings are now live in the latest beta. However, the rollout seems inconsistent. While some beta users have reportedly received the updated chat interface, others have only received the revamped settings menu. The staggered rollout suggests that Google is testing these changes with a small subset of beta users before a wider release, but it gives us a clear idea of what's to come. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the Material 3 Expressive redesign for Google Messages introduces a rounded border at the top of the homepage and pill-shaped buttons on the search screen. The rounded border extends to the chat interface, clearly separating the buttons at the top from the message thread. A similar border appears below the text box when the 'plus' menu is open. The menu now features bigger pill-shaped buttons for all the options, and they no longer have colorful backgrounds. The emoji menu has also received pill-shaped backgrounds for the Emoji, GIFs, Stickers, and Photomoji tabs. The New chat screen also has several rounded elements, including a pill-shaped text input box at the top, a bigger Gemini button with rounded corners, and a rounded background for contacts. The Create group button is the same shape as before, but it now extends the entire width of the screen. Similarly, the options in the Settings menu have received a contrasting background with rounded corners at the top, along with a new toggle design. As mentioned earlier, these Google Messages interface changes are only live on the beta channel, and not all users have received the Material 3 Expressive design elements across all sections of the app. However, since Google has started testing the new design, it shouldn't be long before it rolls out widely. Police will soon be able to use Flock Safety's AI-powered cameras for surveillance, and privacy experts are concerned. The $7.5 billion car surveillance company already has a network of tens of thousands of smart license plate readers, and starting this fall, cops will be able to use them as more traditional surveillance cameras, requesting live feeds or clips from the time when a vehicle passes through its field of vision. Flock's CEO Garrett Langley told Forbes that the update should give police more 'situational awareness,' but civil liberties experts have worried for years about the company's expansion. Jay Stanley, technology director at the ACLU, worries Flock 'is trying to build a nationwide authoritarian surveillance system.' Whether it's the purity or the prestige of acting on stage—A-list stars have become a vital part of the Broadway ecosystem. Take George Clooney—who cowrote, produced and stars in the stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck. The play is nominated for five Tony Awards at this Sunday's ceremony, including Clooney for Best Actor, and has broken weekly box office records as the highest-grossing non-musical play in history.
